For a fascinating glimpse of native culture, there are few places better than the market. All around the world, travelers sample local flavor at food markets, night markets, flea markets, antiques markets, spice markets-- even Christmas markets.

Here, we've selected twenty of the world's many, many wonderful markets to share with you. We don't know about you, but with scenes from Morocco to Moscow, this one really piqued our wanderlust.

As this list is by no means complete, be sure to send us your photos and comments if you feel we've left out a deserving market.

See my photos of Damascus, Syria taken in December 2007. Includes the beautiful souks there, which are among the oldest in the world. http://www.flickr.com/photos/12684766@N05/sets/72157604518177760/

Ok,then. Where is the Rialto in Venice? The Boqueria in Barcelona? La Viga and/or La Merced in Mexico City? The Ferry Place Market in San Francisco?

Who picks these things? Please!

Chatuchak Market (Weekend market) is a important one in Bangkok, the biggest in Thailand but you can find beautiful market in and around Bangkok.

The first one is Amphawa floating market in Samut Songkhram : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vkpz8HEH3oU&feature=player_embedded

I was surprise that the Damnoen Saduak floating market was not in the 22 because it's the most visited floating market in Thailand: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KwaAmMIxg58&feature=youtube_gdata

Than you can go to a century old market, Samchuk Market in Supanburi province.

I was impress by the Reading market in Philadelphia with the Amish community selling and making very good food.

I would add the old souk in Dubai and Durgan Park in Boston.

La Merced in Mexico city is sorely missing. Either that one or Mercado Sonora which is a market for all your magic spells, card reading, and brujeria needs.
