Second place went to Emma Wareus of Botswana, and Adriana Vasini of Venezuela came third.

The host country's own contestant, Tang Xiao, also was among the final five.

According to a brief biography on the Miss World website, Mills calls Louisville, Kentucky, her hometown, and she recently graduated from high school. She would like to become a teacher.

"I've never met a stranger and enjoy meeting new people," she says in the bio.

For the final, she was wearing a shimmering ivory-colored dress slit up the leg.

Mills takes over the title from Kaiane Aldorino of Gibraltar, who was named Miss World 2009 at a ceremony in South Africa last December.

Women from more than 100 countries participated in the contest, organizers said.

This is the 60th year of the Miss World Competition, and organizers brought back contestants from past decades to give the night a retrospective theme.

Don't get it at all. When she smiles, she looks like she's in pain. Ms. Botswana was classically elegant and had such grace and poise. She shoulda gotten it! But what was up with the lackluster audience? They couldn't even muster thunderous applause for their own contestant??? How anticlimactic!! WTF?

Wow. She's classically pretty in that 1890s porcelain doll sense. Even her professional head shots are done to make her more tan and accentuate her cheekbones and eyes to give her an airbrushed exotic look (see Google)...features that are naturally prominent among the runners up. If they were trying to get away from the norm, they did so with a bang.

I saw the contest live and I was really surprised when she won because my favorites were the representatives from Ireland and Botswana, (Miss Botswana was absolutley stunning!!!) I think she is mixed which gives her that extra spice! lol In my humble opinion the best ones were Ireland and Botswana.. But than again the judges choose her.

I keep telling you on this page that American women are more beautiful and gracefull than most women I've seen in other foreign countrys, and now look( que the Bert Parks..Here she comes Miss...) this young lady is stunning, she's beautiful in a graceful way, though she does look to be a little older than 18. I did not watch the pagent, but if I were a judge, if not Miss USA, than Ms. Botswana would have been my next pick, she's equally beautiful just judging by the pictures here.

There are beautiful women all over the world. American women, by no means, are more beautiful nor graceful than their sisters across the globe.

She is very pretty and stands out from the others.

I think she is beautiful and just because someone comes from someplace exotic does not make them more beautiful.

Also, most beauty pagenat winners are not blonde. Most are from South America and India and are dark haired and have the same look themselves.

It is all subjective.

Pretty girl. Did you get a load of that crown? Is that the usual crown for Miss World or do they change it every year? This is different than Miss Universe, right?
