Scenes From The Rally To Restore Sanity: Funny Signs, Outrageous Costumes (VIDEO)

First Posted: 10/31/10 04:10 PM ET Updated: 05/25/11 07:10 PM ET

It was hard to tell whether the Rally To Restore Sanity in Washington was scheduled to coincide with the November 2 midterm elections or with Halloween, but if you looked around the National Mall on Saturday it appeared that many rally-goers embraced a wacky combination of costume and politics.

We made a short video that features some of the best, most creative, and strangest signs and costumes we encountered at the rally. We've also rounded up the funniest signs in this slideshow.

the crowd numbers in comparison to Glenn Beck's Rally to Restore 1-800-GOLD speak for themselves. however I think in terms of bright, smiling, laughing faces this Rally beat any and all numbers that anyone can produce. I have never seen so many happy, calm people in one place in my life, ever. It was a Sea of Humanity if ever Ive seen it...and people on the outskirts didnt even try to stay w the crowd, they just roamed all around seeing the sights and taking pics...what a Day of Days...

Then it is clear that you were not there.

There were some there, as well as Asians, Latinos,...

Maybe you're confusing this event with the Million Man March?

Here's another great site of funny signs from the rally:

Newsweek's Gabriel Snyder has identified the Rally's Twitter account as history's largest act of press criticism. I'm still in awe of the Rally's turnout-over 250,000 participants!

To Linkdrone-a political woodstock indeed!

Those signs were hilarious and the link has sublinks to more.

Thanks.

Went to the Rally from St Louis. Showed up early, got a good seat, had a fantastic time. Other than being sunburnt on one side of my face, I had a terrific experience. The cops were bored, the crowd behaved itself, its a shame people weren't selling "I survived the metro" t-shirts, I think they would have done well. On a side note, kudos to the Metro staff, they handled an unmanageable situation in an amazingly professional manner.

Wow! I was glad to finally see some leftist street theater/costumes. Let's have more. It's colorful, fun, and shifts opinions.

Not great. One or two that were in sync with the message of the day but mostly partisan signs.

Yeah, really… you weren't there, were you?
08:09 AM on 11/01/2010
No I wasn't there, though I wish I could have been. But from I read on the NYT blog, the people most enthusiastic (those who got there early) had non-partisan signs - would have liked to see more of them in this post.

I was there at the Rally to Restore Sanity. I was a great day for the United States. Driving down from Pittsburgh, I saw other cars that had signs saying things like "Restore Sanity or Bust". So, I stopped and got a notebook and some markers and put a sign in my car window that said Restore Sanity. I got honks and thumbs up all the way to DC. Then on the way home, I followed my GPS and ended up passing a sign for the Flight 93 memorial in Shanksville, PA. I decided to stop. As I looked out over the place where those heroic people crashed to the ground, I took out my little paper sign that said Restore Sanity, and with permission, taped to the chain link fence there, amongst all the little American flags. I prayed for us, as a nation, and for all of us in the human race to strive to become the people that our God knows we can be. People of love, people of compassion, and like the passengers of flight 93, people of sacrifice. Amen
