Colbert Estimates Rally Attendance At 6 Billion People (VIDEO)

First Posted: 11/02/10 02:05 PM ET Updated: 05/25/11 07:10 PM ET

Last night on "The Colbert Report," Stephen Colbert took a fond look back at this weekend's Rally To Restore Sanity And/Or Fear, saluting the heroes of the rally by leading the audience in a patriotic ballad, and providing some interesting statistics about the rally's attendance.

"According to official sources in my gut, there was a crowd of over six billion people on the Mall," Colbert said, adding that The New York Times had printed his tweeted estimate.

"That is two historic events in one weekend," he continued, "My rally, and The New York Times printing the truth."

Colbert then took a minute to remember the historic day with footage of attendees in their "fearful finest" while leading the audience in a sing-along.

One of the rally signs I saw said the following:

"According to Glenn Beck Math, there are at least 17 million people here."

Not as many as Fox viewers who thought that Glenn Beck's rally had one million people (actual number 87,000 by impartial estimates.)

Was very effective in helping the dems which was the intent of the rally.

Did you attened the rally? Those of us there got a lot more out of it. If the libs and dems are as simple as you give them credit for - then they didn't need the rally to provide them with motivations. I like to think we're a little more educated and analytical than that though. Afterall, we're not the ones who get messages from the distorted image of Jesus on a piece of toast.

"Progressives" apparently prefer laughing among themselves to actually winning power in America, which can only be accomplished by winning over a chunk of centrist independents who aren't Colbert fans.

Yes, it's true, progressives would rather laugh than pursue political power. I think that's one of our virtues.

I think that every politician who has started a war, or consciously enacted a policy against poor people, or lied about an opponent in a political race, has something dark in their soul. And they really, really need to laugh.
