Shoot The Freak

nypost.com:

Coney Island thrill seekers have shot their last freak.

The operators of the new Luna Park told nine longtime boardwalk businesses to get out by Nov. 15 -- clearing the way for their new vision of a cleaner, more sanitized Coney Island amusement district.

Only three mainstays will remain, mingling with new tenants like a sit-down restaurant and a sports bar.

With the state that the economy is in, the working people of NYC need Coney Island more than ever. This is our backyard, and its always been a source of our culture. which has always been deeply rooted in resistance to mainstream homogenized farces like this. I hope that every kid in south brooklyn is stocking up on Krylon.... feel me?

Are the new operators young? Because it appears that they are either young and spoiled or just "out of touch with what works" young. If they are more mature in age then they are stupid in brains and assumptions along with CI history and like anything in this universe, either learn the history or be doomed to failure.

It will be every bit as clean, neat, tidy, cheerful.... and SOUL-LESS as Times Square

Yup. They want something clean and shiny and more accessible to middle America, and are willing to disregard the fact that a 76-year old bar will ALWAYS have more genuine NY character than anything they can possible imagine to replace it. Ruby's is a great place -- I've been going there for years and years. I can't fathom a visit to Coney Island without stopping there for a drink and a laugh, and to marinate in it's authentically quirky vibe. To think an amusement park company based in Italy has been given a 10 year lease and is now allowed to control not just the rides at Coney Island, but the entire Coney Island boardwalk (ergo the CI experience) is an abomination. In their efforts to lure tourists, they are destroying everything that average New Yorkers enjoy about CI. We LIKE a little seediness. We LIKE some odd characters populating the boardwalk. We don't want another modern sports bar with dozens of TV's -- there's enough of these throughout the rest of the city. Someone needs to stand up for Ruby's and save it before it's too late. It is irreplaceable!

Mahatma, if you love this bar you need to step up and start a campaign. Don't expect someone else to do it.
