Rand Paul Plans To 'Challenge' Mitch McConnell

Rand Paul Mcconnell

A lot has changed since Rand Paul declared victory over his opponent, Trey Grayson, in Kentucky's GOP Senate primary. He made the quick transition from conservative firebrand to establishment dependent, as conservative leaders around the country stood up for him in the wake of a number of very public foot-in-mouth moments. Now, likely on the verge of winning a trip to Washington as Kentucky's Senator, he's again in the driver's seat, saying that people like GOP Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell can't necessarily count on his cooperation.

"We will challenge him from day to day, but there will be many areas in which we agree," Paul said of McConnell during an appearance Tuesday on CNN's "American Morning."

McConnell chose Grayson over Paul in Kentucky's Republican primary, but has since announced his support for the Tea Party favorite, and has, at times, defended him from his own controversial views. McConnell told Politico in October that the two have been "deeply involved" since joining forces after the primary.

But Paul's statements Tuesday appear to be singing a somewhat different tune.

"Most Republicans think we're spending too much, the deficit's too high. But sometimes when we've gotten in power we've gone along and not really stayed the course," Paul said. "I will be one who will say to Republicans in my party, 'We do need to stay the course and go ahead and balance our budget.'"

"What I'm going to work to try to change is the whole government. I think government is broken top to bottom. And I think both sides - not just Republicans, not just Democrats - they've both shown themselves to be untrustworthy," Paul continued.

As some have pointed out, however, such visionary rhetoric may end up playing out more like an illusion of grandeur. Some have said that the establishment GOP will not be receptive to attempts by Tea Party-backed Senate candidates to shift the politics of Capitol Hill so far rightward, while others have argued that the Republican agenda has been so co-opted by the Tea Party that they will have little choice but to do so.

Paul mentioned similar misgivings about McConnell in a June debate. In October, however, the GOP nominee had changed his tune, expressing support for the Senate Republican leader. Paul's latest comments could indicate that he would support Sen. Jim DeMint if the South Carolina Republican made a play for the Senate GOP's top post.

Yep, yep, yep, Incitatus's rear end is gonna make a real impact on the senate. They'll have to hire a person to muck out the chamber.

Whoah, Chicken Little's getting uppity. Well maybe if he can get some ba//s together he might manage to be a dissenting voice like his father. But I don't think it's very likely. Seems to me the best part of that boy was what dribbled down Ron's leg.

Jack Conway was maknig headway unitl the Aqua Budda ads, Rand Paul whined like a baby and Kentucky fell for it. How could they have elected someone eho turned the other cheek when a staffer stomped on Ms. Valle's head? How could Kentucky have voted for someone who thinks the civil rights admendment is bad for the private sector?

Conway didn't believe in separation of church and state. Rand does. That is how Conway lost. He made Rand look good easily. And you can't tell me that Conway wasn't whining also.

Early in Obama's presidency, before the GOP needed the tea bagger vote and wasn't yet pretending that they cared about cutting spending or the deficit, they opposed almost 10 billion in cuts to farm subsidies.

Perhaps, now that Kentucky has Rand Paul as a Senator, they will agree to return the over 500 million a year they take from the federal government and the nation's taxpayers to supplement their market inefficiencies?

Perhaps Rand can convince sucessionist Texas to give back the nearly 2 BILLION they rob from our pockets each year.

9 million people and 500 million in farm subsidies.

That's about 55 bucks per person.

I say refund them all 55 dollars on their taxes and cut the subsidies.
10:47 PM on 11/03/2010
That'll make the seven people who get the subsidies mad.

They all sound like teenagers. We are going to challenge McConnell, we are going to reduce the spending, abolish health care, we are going to reduce the deficit, balance the budget. we are going to this....we are going to do that. Good luck,

If the first thing Rand Paul asks McConnell to cut are FARM SUBSIDIES I may start to actually respect him.

Newly-elected Tea Party candidates are like the latest winner of American Idol who has just gotten a recording contract and think they are going to set the world on fire. They show up at the studio brimming with a big ego, a list of songs, and the obligatory entourage. Within 15 minutes of arriving, they are told by the record-company producer what songs they will sing, how they will sing them, and OBTW, lose the nose ring

It is just a matter of time befor the oil (new Tea Party office holders) and the water (regular Republicans) realize that they both do not mix well (make a compatible union). Thereafter the party will implode.

The only people whom Rand Paul will not disappoint be will be progressives.
He'll be just another big mouth that has no business anywhere decent let alone the senate.
He'll be scorned by everyone as soon as he opens his mealy mouth.
