TOLEDO, Ohio — A congressional candidate criticized for dressing in a Nazi uniform during World War II re-enactments has lost his election bid in Ohio.

Republican Rich Iott (EYE'-aht) lost to Democratic Rep. Marcy Kaptur, who has been in Congress since 1983.

Iott was a little-known political newcomer when photos surfaced in October of him wearing a Nazi uniform. He was a considered a longshot even before the photos went viral.

He says he took part in the historical re-enactments to educate the public and didn't agree with the Nazis' views or their actions against Jews.

Many Republicans said they wouldn't support someone who would dress in Nazi attire. Critics included Eric Cantor of Virginia, the No. 2 Republican in the House.

THANK YOU BUCKEYES!!!! I really would have been disappointed had he won. And on behalf of all of those who survived the Nazi camps (if they don't mind).......one VERY important finger.

That's hilarious- early on NPR declared him a winner.

Bet they're in tears now that the Teabaggers lost so many races, and failed miserably.

In all the hit pieces that the Huffpo ran they featured Lott in pictures wearing a Union Civil War Uniform.

I guess the Huffpo writers must assume anyone in a military uniform is must be a storm trooper.

I'm disappointed. Not that he lost. He was always an outside longshot. But, that the fact that he used to cosplay in WWII reinactments was such a huge issue in the first place is saddening.
