South Dakota Election Results

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — Republican Lt. Gov. Dennis Daugaard (DOO'-gahrd) has been elected South Dakota's new governor over Democratic candidate Scott Heidepriem (HY-duh-prim).

The 57-year-old Daugaard told voters he has the experience to be governor after running an organization that helps troubled children, serving six years in the state Senate and working eight years as South Dakota's part-time lieutenant governor.

He inherits state budget problems from current Gov. Mike Rounds, who could not seek re-election because of term limits.

Daugaard said he is ready to cut spending to balance the budget. He said his top long-term priority is to boost the state economy.
