Tensions Already Flaring Between Progressives And Centrists Over Democrats' 2010 Performance

WASHINGTON -- The spinning wars over the election results will occur not just between Democrats and Republicans but also amongst Democrats themselves. And in an early salvo to manage the narrative, the Progressive Change Campaign Committee sent over results of a PPP poll it commissioned showing that likely voters in New Hampshire's 2nd district would have soundly rejected the more centrist Democratic candidate had she actually won.

PCCC, which made the election of progressive Democrat Ann Kuster its number-one priority this cycle, decided for theoretical purposes to poll not just their candidate but the one she beat in the primary, Katrina Swett, against Republican Charlie Bass.

According to the results -- culled from 810 respondents -- voters favor Kuster over Bass by a margin of 47 to 45 percent (we'll see if those figures hold up tonight). They favor Bass over Swett, a co-chair of Sen. Joseph Lieberman's 2004 presidential campaign, by a margin of 45 percent to 39 percent. The Libertarian and Independent candidates were included as well.

Figuring out how much weight to put into these numbers is tricky. On the one hand, Swett isn't on the ballot. Voters haven't had to think about her candidacy for weeks, perhaps explaining why her standing is below 40 percent. On the other hand, she hasn't been subjected to the negative attacks that come with running in a hotly contested race.

When Democrats reconvene following Tuesday's elections, there is going to be a fairly contentious debate over what went wrong -- both on policy and political grounds. On Monday, the moderate wing of the party made a pitch for greater post-election relevance, with the group Third Way explaining that it "is crucial for Democrats to return to the center with bold and bipartisan policy solutions that are realistic in the next Congress and resonate with moderates and Independents."

PCCC, in putting out the Kuster poll, is countering back. The organization raised over $150,000 for Kuster and made more than 130,000 calls on her behalf. Their investment, however, was meant to prove a larger point than simply to get her elected.

"If the corporate-funded Third Way candidate had won this primary, Democrats would have lost this seat," said Stephanie Taylor, PCCC co-founder. "But because Ann Kuster won this primary and campaigned hard on popular progressive issues, voters were inspired -- and Democrats stand on the verge of winning this race in a typically Republican district in a typically Republican year. The lesson for Democrats in 2010 is that they need to fight more strongly on popular progressive issues if they want to inspire voters."

The fact the repugs have been able to convince some people that
MORE capitulation is what is needed is astounding.
They have consistently and slowly moved the moderate bar over to their side.

To the point where the Democratic party is just a convenient boogeyman
to increase corporate donations from corporations for the repug party.

Todays Democrat is what was yesterday a moderate republican.
Todays republican is what was yesterday a corporate cleptocrat, a straight up criminal.

It sure is easier to be a Republican than a Democrat. They lie, we tell the truth. We all have different views theirs are all the same.

ANYBODY, Please explain to this believer in individual liberty, free choice and individual responsibility, what in the world a "progressive" is, and what role the monopoly power of the federal government plays in their lives?

People on this site all talk around the issue, but never address it head on, from what I've read.

Thanks!

It is really not all that difficult to determine how much weight to give to a poll about a hypothetical race -- 'Zero' is the correct answer. The battle royale for the heart and soul of the Democratic Party is the Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad Tea Party now taking place. Mark Penn, Paul Begala, Jim Carville, Stanley Greenberg -- all chime in unison -- "Democrats must be much more like Republicans, well, you know, 'Reagan Democrats,'" while the Progressives stay on their mantra -- "The Democratic base went on an apathy-strike because of centrist Reagan Democrats' compromises with their beloved Republican neocons." The divisive struggle will dominate the Democratic Party over the next two years during the rerun of Gridlock Nation and the lurch to the right by the Republicans now united with the Tea Party faction.

Tepid responses are not going to win you over anymore, but this cycle is just what corporate America is familiar with, an easily divided and misled public that is willing to suffer more than it is willing to reach consensus and do things that actually help achieve social equilibrium.

"to vote is a right we all have and what we do or don't do with it is also our right"

From another perspective, voting is a hard earned privilege. As a minority voting was fought long and hard for and when I read about anyone who didn't vote because they were angry that Obama, or the Democratics, or whoever hasn't performed they way they want-I think they should forfeit their voting privileges for the next election. I will always honor the Civil Rights Warriors that put their lives on the line for years so I can take a couple hours out of my day to educate myself on what's happening in the country and take a half hour, stand in line and vote. My vote not only supports the agenda I would like to see go forward but it honor the movement.
Many people didn't vote because all they understand is what they can or can't see period. What they should have done is take the time to educate themselves on what is going on and vote out the obstructionist that is keeping the country from moving backwards. By not voting they have contributed to the decline of this country and it's people. If you didn't vote, after January, every morning ask yourself-am I better off? Tea bagger voters-you've been had! Now you will feel the frustration you deserve. Gridlock is all that's going to occur. Repugs used you-and you deserve it.

"On Monday, the moderate wing of the party made a pitch for greater post-election relevance..."

How is even POSSIBLE for the "moderate wing" of the Democratic Party to have more relevance?

In the past two years, the "moderate wing" of the Democratic Party has:

1) enjoyed a Presidential Cabinet staffed almost exclusively by plutocrats;

2) helped get the big banks bailed out;

3) got the big auto manufacturers bailed out;

4) got the stimulus package for the "little people" chopped down to a point where unemployment was scarcely affected by it;

(and now, here come the big ones...)

5) succeeded in silencing any debate over America's TWO ONGOING WARS; and

6) got the big-business friendly health insurance initiative that Democrats have promoted since the early 1990's.

What did progressives get? The Lilly Ledbetter Act.

The only way that the Democrats could possibly begin to redeem themselves is to stand their ground, and let the Bush tax cuts expire on schedule. We've put a LOT of money in the pockets of rich people over the past ten years, and it's time they did their share again. (Mind you, the Clinton era was quite prosperous.)

But what are we hearing from "moderate Democrats" on this subject? That they are seriously considering NOT letting the Bush-era tax cuts expire.

Can I get a "let them eat cake"?

But, but the Lily Ledbetter Act enbiggered all our lives! I agree with everything you said but let me point out why the Clinton years became so prosperous, With the repeal of Glass/Steagall what we got was the bubble beginning to bulid with the home mortgage frauds beginning to be perpetrated. Then there was the growth of hedge funds not to mention the .Com rise. We also weren't fighting 2 and a half phony baloney wars and "terrorism" around the world that is sucking us dry. And both parties are to blame for that!

Don't get me wrong, I know quite well that Clinton signed the repeal of Glass-Steagall. And I thought it was a horrible decision.

But you should note, he did it in 1999. The economic boom was well underway by then.

The DNC and DCCC ran campaigns as candidates as GOP lite, not Democrats. And until they get it through their thick heads that the only way they'll ever win is to run as DEMOCRATS, we'll continue to see election results like we saw tonight.

The guy who is just trying to keep his home will lose it because he doesn't know what those initials mean along with what they guy he votes for really is going to do or has done. And that ain't the fault of the guy or gal running for office, it is the guy who votes who doesn't do his or her homework!

Ok, we liberals stayed home in droves. Since the administration was so much angrier with us than the right wingnuts, they presumably now have people they can work so much better with. Enjoy the next 2 years, one term president. Am I happy? Whats the difference? I wasn't happy the last 8 with Bush, or the last 2 with our jelly fish spined Obama. The country will survive either way. Fortunately we have a more intelligent option to the North, Canada. Except for that horrible free medical care, it's almost perfect. LOL

You sound like some recent high school graduate who thinks they know how things work and everyone who doesn't hold your POV must be a whiner. I've seen 17 elections now and I've never seen both sides happy about the outcome. I also have seen the progression of the Republicans into a more ideological and maniacal group of naysayers over the last 40 years. I've also seen the regression of the Dimocan'ts into trying to beat the Republiwon'ts by being more like them instead of less like them. The Dems of the 60's and early 70's aren't anything like the Dims of today.

And for your information, to vote is a right we all have and what we do or don't do with it is also our right so who are you to pass judgment on anyone for doing what their conscience tells them? I voted my conscience when I voted for Ralph Nader twice because it is better to vote your conscience and lose than it is to vote for the winner and be betrayed. And that is what a lot of people in this country are feeling. As someone said a long time ago, "in times like these it is best to remember there have always been times like these."

Ok, you ultra-liberals stayed home, because you were much angrier with your own party than the obstructionist on the republican side. You took another election from us, as you did in 1994 and 2000.

What blather. Did you look at the exit polls? Women defected to the Republicans. Independents defected to the Republicans. The youth vote wasn't there. But still, somehow, it's the liberals fault.

good thing the Reps didn't do more damage than 57 seats in congress. Leaves room for improvement in 2012. Especially with Senate and Presidency still in Dem hands.

Dems will still be held mostly responsible for the next 2 years.

Obama would have done better in 2012 with a rep sweep of both houses

No he wouldn't. That would just give them more power to prevent any jobs bills from getting passed. The president always gets blamed for the economy, good or bad. Realistic or not, the uneducated masses hold the president responsible. So, if the republicans can just prevent the economy from rebounding for two more years they can have the presidency and the senate and they can get back to the business of trying to conquer the world.

Far left framing" Obama is a failure, he couldn't get 6 of his blue dogs democrats in line in order to get a public option".

Far right framing" George Bush cares about America. He couldn't get 6 senators from the OTHER side of the aisle to support the public option".

Learn this lesson, my fellow Dems, or you will continue to disappoint us on election day.
