Colorado Election Results 2010: Michael Bennet Defeats Ken Buck

Colorado Election Results 2010

DENVER — Sen. Michael Bennet narrowly defeated tea party Republican Ken Buck on Wednesday, allowing Democrats to hold onto a Senate seat once viewed as a prime opportunity for the GOP to make gains.

Bennet provided a crucial firewall during midterm elections in which Republicans made a historic surge. But his win looked anything but certain.

The Colorado race attracted more out-of-state campaign money than any other Senate contest this year, prompting a stream of vicious attack ads as both parties viewed the contest as the one that could tip the balance of power in Congress.

Buck, an affable campaigner whose folksy charm launched him over a better-funded Republican primary opponent, had a small lead heading into the election, according to many polls.

But with 97 percent of the projected vote counted Wednesday, Bennet was leading by about 15,400 votes out of 1.4 million cast.

Bennet himself seemed pleasantly surprised when he declared victory. He talked about the national anti-incumbent mood, and the perception that Republicans would rack up victories all across the country.

"When they get to Colorado, let me tell you, they're not going to know what happened," Bennet said Wednesday in a victory speech outside the Denver museum where President Barack Obama last year signed the stimulus bill into law.

More than a hundred Democrats packed the plaza to cheer for the party's better-than-predicted performance here. Democrats lost two House seat to the GOP, but one vulnerable House Democrat in the Denver suburbs hung on, and the party's gubernatorial candidate, Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper, won easily in a three-way contest.

Left-leaning Democratic allies also succeeded in defeating a raft of Colorado ballot measures proposed by conservatives, including a measure outlawing abortion and a trio of measures to reduce taxes and government borrowing.

The Senate win came after Bennet drubbed Buck as an out-of-touch extremist.

Bennet and Democratic allies reminded Colorado's moderate voters that Buck opposes abortion, even in cases of rape and incest; that he had questioned the separation of church and state; and that he said sexual orientation is a choice. The too-extreme-for-Colorado theme helped counter heavy spending from outside conservative groups.

Buck conceded the race with a message on his Facebook page.

"While the final margin in the race is very small, Colorado voters have spoken," Buck wrote.

Bennet, 45, was appointed to the seat last year to replace Ken Salazar, who became Interior Secretary. Before his appointment, Bennet was superintendent of Denver Public Schools and had never run for public office.

Democrats retained control of the Senate on Tuesday, though they lost at least six seats to the GOP. Senate races in Washington and Alaska were too close to call Wednesday.

And, Florida elected the guy who tried to steal $1.7 billion of taxpayer money, the CFO is republican and the legislature is strongly republican.

Goodbye state pension funds. What Jeb didn't steal for Enron, Rick Scott and his allies will finish.

Good grief.

Apparently the entire state of Florida has gone senile and should be committed.

As a Florida resident, I feel that currently there is almost no hope for Florida. The Republican, good 'ol boy machine is in firmly in control. Too many people are uneducated, too busy or lazy to pay attention to anything other than TV for their information/education, religion makes decisions for them, too old, and/or only worried about themselves. Senile is a great word. There are a lot of intelligent youth, many of whom are energized about the issues, but they are currently overwhelmingly outnumbered and lacking a voice. We have at least another ten years of Republican domination in Florida. Watch as our state continues to nose-dive. I am just glad Jeff Greene didn't get elected. That would have put me over the edge.

Congrats to Michael Bennet. At the time of the health care debate he said that he would vote in favour of the health care bill, no matter whether it would cost him is Senatorial seat.

I am glad that a majority of the people of Colorado voted for him. Michael Bennet comes across as an honest politicians who stands by his believes even in DC, a rarity these days.

So, How do people like having out of state corporate funds going towards the elections in YOUR state????

Both sides did it but the RIGHT had a lot more cash due to being in bed with Big Business. Is this how you want elections decided in your state?

Call your Congressmen and women and ask that they work to keep Corporate Money out of local and national politics!!!!!!!

Election 2012: We must sweep the Western Firewall of NV,NM, and CO. We also must make sure IA, PA, and WI don't switch to the Republicans
I don't think we will win IN, VA,NC, FL, or OH the next election.

You have to wonder, though, how this Buck guy did so well with Coloradans......especially among women. He almost won, despite his REALLY out-of-the-mainstream ideas. This guy think abortion in ANY circumstances is wrong, even if the health of the mother depends on it.

America needs to ease up a lot on TV, entertainment, sports, etc. It's time people listen carefully and educate themselves. Education is the ONLY thing that would make America stand.

From the article,

"""With 97 percent of the projected vote counted, Buck is leading by about 15,400 votes out of 1.4 million cast.""""

To whomever wrote this piece out, it is unprofessional to be smoking weed at work.

Anyway, Obama's firewalls in the west (Nevada and Colorado) have not given up on him just yet.

I didn't see where he conceded. I didn't see where you mentioned the money Soros poured into the Guber race and the Senate race, just Rove's $$$.

I thought there was going to be a recount.

The money Soros donated was in response to Rupert Murdoch sending a million dollars to a Republican committee. He said as much.

And to try and compare the Corporate Money going into Democratic backed candidates with the money going into GOP backed candidates is a little like comparing a Prius to a Hummer H2!!!

I'd rather we remove corporate interests completely out of politics.

At least Democratic corporate pacs are not ashamed to tell us who they are....

so either tell us you backers, republicans..... or help us get rid of the supreme court decision that makes corporations people. All the Democrats already voted for it... but the republicans don't want us to know how much foreign money they illegally took in!

...and yet again Colo voters decisively deep-sixed a measure which would have conferred "personhood" and its attendant rights on ferilized eggs, a back-door attempt at criminalizing abortion---but which fooled no-one
