David Hockney Trades In His Drawing Pad For An iPad

First Posted: 11/04/10 03:03 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 07:10 PM ET

"If I just had a pencil and paper beside my bedside, the sunrise just wouldn't be that interesting," says David Hockney of his newest iphone art. For his newest project, Hockney uses his iphone to create digital drawings which he then emails to his friends all over the world. Combining the old with the new, Hockey exhibits this digital series in an old fashion stye exhibit, displaying various drawings together in a geometric grid-like manner. As the revolutionary he has always been, who wouldn't count on David Hockney to trade in his Drawing pad for an ipad.

I can't draw with my finger. Does iPad have a stylus?

Does he use an iPhone or an iPad? The title indicates an iPad but the article actually states he uses an iPhone. If you're talking medium here, which is it?

Seems like an apathetic gimmick. Seems there is no art in that grid, just default presentation by exhibition managers. As evidence take the BBC video, which for whatever reasons (technology not cooperating likely, as in moiré) is quite content to skip over the drawings themselves, and just linger lovingly on the fetishization of the ipad--which is basically a tricked-out frame. I haven't seen the actual show, just what I can glean from this video.

I use to wear a Cardiagn that David Hockney Owned, it was bright blue polyester and ugly....I threw it away.

I like his Art however.
