Obama Takes Responsibility For Voter Frustration On Election Night

Obama Elections Responsibility

WASHINGTON — A chastened President Barack Obama signaled a willingness to compromise with Republicans on tax cuts and energy policy Wednesday, one day after his party lost control of the House and suffered deep Senate losses in midterm elections.

Obama ruefully called the Republican victories "a shellacking" and acknowledged that his own connection with the public had frayed.

At a White House news conference, the president said that when Congress returns, "my goal is to make sure we don't have a huge spike in taxes for middle class families." He made no mention of his campaign-long insistence that tax cuts be permitted to expire on upper-income families, a position he said would avoid swelling the deficit but put him in conflict with Republicans.

He also virtually abandoned his legislation – hopelessly stalled in the Senate – featuring economic incentives to reduce carbon emissions from power plants, vehicles and other sources.

"I'm going to be looking for other means of addressing this problem," he said. "Cap and trade was just one way of skinning the cat," he said, strongly implying there will be others.

In the campaign, Republicans slammed the bill as a "national energy tax" and jobs killer, and numerous Democrats sought to emphasize their opposition to the measure during their own re-election races.

The president opened his post-election news conference by saying voters who felt frustrated by the sluggish pace of economic recovery had dictated the Republican takeover in the House.

Asked to reflect on the returns, he said, "I feel bad," adding that many Democrats who went down to defeat had done so knowing they risked their careers to support his agenda of economic stimulus legislation and a landmark health care bill. He blamed himself, in part.

"The relationship that I've had with the American people is one that built slowly, peaked at this incredible high, and then during the course of the last two years, as we've together gone through some very difficult times, has gotten rockier and tougher," Obama said.

Criticized at times for appearing detached and aloof, Obama spoke about the challenges he's faced in engaging the American people from the often insular White House.

"When I'm out of this place, that's not an issue," Obama said. "When you're in this place, it is hard not to seem removed."

Obama also acknowledged that he must repair his relationship with private sector leaders who view him as anti-business, saying that the relationship is one that "has not been managed by me as well" as it should have been.

The president said he was eager to sit down with the leaders of both political parties "and figure out how we can move forward together."

"It won't be easy," he said, noting the two parties differ profoundly in some key areas.

On one controversial issue, the president said he saw a possibility that Congress might agree to overturn the military's ban on openly gay service members when lawmakers return to the Capitol for a post-election session later this month.

The election was a humbling episode for the once-high-flying president, and the change showed during his news conference. Largely absent were his smiles and buoyant demeanor, replaced by somberness and an acknowledgment that his policies may have alienated some Americans.

"I think people started looking at all this, and it felt as if government was getting much more intrusive into people's lives than they were accustomed to," he conceded. But he wasn't talking surrender either.

He sought to tread a careful line, suggesting he would cooperate with Republicans where it was possible and confront them when it was not.

"No one party will be able to dictate where we go from here," he said, a clear warning to Republicans that he won't simply bow to their demands for a sharply conservative switch in economic policy.

With his comments, Obama largely followed the lead of Republican leaders who said earlier in the day they were willing to compromise – within limits.

With unemployment at 9.6 percent, both the president and the Republicans will be under pressure to compromise. Yet neither must lose faith with core supporters – the Republicans with the tea party activists who helped them win power, Obama with the voters whose support he will need in 2012.

The president said the economy had begun a recovery since he took office but Americans became wary when they saw government bailouts of failing banks and two of the Big Three U.S. automakers.

Many Republicans campaigned by calling for repeal of the health care legislation Obama won from Congress, but the president said repeal was a nonstarter.

"If Republicans have some ideas" for cutting costs of health care or making other changes in the bill, he said he would be glad to take a look.

"There are going to be some examples of where we can tweak and make progress," he said. "But I don't think if you ask the American people, `should we stop trying to close the doughnut hole that helps seniors get prescription drugs, should we go back to where people with pre-existing conditions can't get health insurance' ... I don't think you'd have a strong vote from people saying, `Those are provisions I want to eliminate.'"

Famously unemotional in public, Obama was asked whether he needs to change his leadership style, and he responded: "When you're in this place, it is hard not to seem removed."

He said he needs to do more "to ensure I'm getting out of here." He also pointed out that "a couple of great communicators" – Reagan and Clinton – also stood at the podium two years into their presidencies "getting very similar questions."

Actually, Clinton's electoral comeuppance was worse. Republicans won both the House and Senate at his first midterm, but he recovered to win re-election two years later.

Republicans lost seats in Congress at Reagan's first midterm election in 1982 but never had a House majority to lose, and kept control of the Senate for four more years.

First get a new Public Relations person - then stop trying to compromise with the Republicans are start pushing through the Progressive stuff that "you promised" to do (like DADT). The votes against democrats were cast based on lies with no basis in fact - need to tout the things you do/are doing before Faux News and the Republicans get their stupid lies out (like non of the teabaggers even know they go a tax cut from you).

That will engergize everyone that backed you in 2008. The Republicans are disrespecting the Office of the President - even if you don't mind them doing this to you - they are lowering the public respect for the President in general.

Obama: I think that what I think is absolutely true is, voters are not satisfied with the outcomes. I mean, if -- if right now we had 5 percent unemployment instead of 9.6 percent unemployment, then people would have more confidence in those policy choices. The fact is -- is that, you know, for most folks, you know, proof of whether they work or not is, has the economy gotten back to where it needs to be? And it hasn't.

FACT: "I think that what I think is absolutely true..." Obama just admitted that because his policies have done nothing to boost the economy and private sector employment, a majority of the American people have awakened to his ruse.

Since they've got the answer, I'll be waiting to see what the Repubes do to stimulate the economy and decrease unemployment in 2-years . . . .

1) get the GOVT h*** out of the way and let the free market/small business get their feet again. That may mean some tax cuts/incentives ... Govt's don't create jobs, small business does.
2) Let folks know what kind of taxes they'll be paying this coming year ... the uncertainty is hurting companies, hurting individuals, and hurting the economy/markets
3) Stop spending! China's already sent a warning to us ... they're going to pull the plug on us (not buy any more of our debt") if we don't get our financial house in order and the dollar doesn't stop its shrinking act. With about 46 cents of every dollar our Govt spends being borrowed money, If China says "no more" we're really screwed.
12:14 PM on 11/09/2010
Getting out of the way implies stop doing stupid things ....

Again ... the top 5% pay over 50% of the taxes now ... forget the "loopholes"

Consumption tax hurts the poor/middle class ... is that what you want?

Oh, don't worry about the debt ... our own stupid Govt's now monetizing our debt ... nearly $1 Trillion. They swore up and down they wouldn't do that ... and now they are. The only way they can do that is to print more money. That makes your dollar and mine worth less ... drives the cost of goods up (Have you checked the price of food/commodities lately? So much for "no inflation")

Obama: But what is absolutely true is that with all that stuff coming at folks fast and furious -- a recovery package, what we had to do with respect to the banks, what we had to do with respect to the auto companies -- I think people started looking at all this and it felt as if government was getting much more intrusive in people's lives than they were accustomed to.

FACT: I think he actually gets it right here. There is a Great Awakening to the threat of Obama's Socialist agenda.

Obama: Now, the reason was there was an emergency situation, but I think it's understandable that folks said to themselves, you know, maybe this is the agenda as opposed to a response to an emergency. And that's something that I think, you know, everybody in the White House understood was a danger.

FACT: Right again, but Obama's endeavor to nationalize health care (18 percent of the U.S. economy) had nothing to do with any financial emergency other than, in the words of O's former Chief of Staff, "Never let a good crisis go to waste."
03:37 PM on 11/05/2010
Obama: I think that over the last two years, we have made a series of very tough decisions, but decisions that were right in terms of moving the country forward in an emergency situation, where we had the risk of slipping into a second Great Depression.

FACT: Obama "inherited" the Bush administration's decision to prop up the banks in order to avoid a cascading economic collapse. Obama's "stimulus plan" did little more than stimulated the growth of the central government in order to prop up the transition to a Democratic Socialist state. See the stats.

This election was a wake-up call.

TO: Tsunami effect - since your comments were trashed by the moderators, I have replied.

First of all republicans gaining seats is a normal political cycle that has been going on for many years. Reagan admin lost seats to dems, Clinton admin lost seats to Republicans, Bush lost seats to dems, get the picture. Do I need to draw a map.

Secondly at the end of the day, the republicans will disppoint their base. They have no solutions, no alternatives, but I guess that does not really matter to you people as long as Obama is put in his place, right.

There was a recent poll that stated majority of Americans expect republicans to disappoint, well you can count on that. Exactly what do you think the republcians are going to do that they have not be able to do 8 years ago. At least the dems try, but what have Republicans done for the last two years besides sucking on sour grapes.

Since you gave me a quote, I have one for you. " Show me a man who votes against his own interest and I will show you a right wingnut troll," cbat.

They don't need solutions, they just have to paint themselves as protecting the average person from the overreach of government, the evil socialist agenda of this administration. Its how they have experienced a resurgence.
12:54 PM on 11/05/2010
is a socialist aganda? if so, is it evil? or is there not a socialist agenda?

63 seats in the House, 6 in the senate, many governorships and massive state house and senate pickups are not cyclical, but repudiation.

Obama needs to recognize that he's not the grand unifier that he imagined because the regressive reactionaries are bent on destroying him and everything he stands for.

He is right about polarity and divisiveness being bad but this is war and the only thing worse than fighting is losing.

Then, he needs to place the blame for America's down-slide where it belongs:

The Bush Administration that squandered the USA's economic reserves, led the nation to war based on false pretenses, ran up a huge debt to finance that war and stacked the Supreme Court with political activists that opened the floodgates to unlimited Corporate influence in the electoral process.

Also, filling his own cabinet with bankers who bailed out their peers but not homeowners, forcing the purchase of health insurance without providing a non-profit public health care option, letting the telephone companies that performed illegal wiretaps off the hook and continuing to hold prisoners with no right to habeas corpus.

McCain certainly would have been far worse but still, Obama turned his back on those that believed most in the profound change he represented, instead deferring far too much to the powers that benefit most from the status quo.

He had to chance to do far more than he did but wasted it expecting to gain the support of opposition legislators who have no sympathy for his good intentions. It will be much harder to get the job done without the congressional majorities that were lost Tuesday.

He said he'd take responsibility, and yet he'll continue to believe that it was not his policies that frustrated the right AND left, but that it was simply that they "didn't get their message out." That's another way of calling Americans uninformed, which is another way to call them dumb (a liberal favorite).
