San Francisco Giants Celebrate World Series Win At Parade (PHOTOS)

SAN FRANCISCO -- Thousands of baseball fans flocked to downtown Wednesday to toast the San Francisco Giants' World Series championship and see their hometown heroes take a victory lap in a ticker-tape parade reminiscent of the one held when the team moved west from New York 52 years ago.

"This is Christmas, New Year's and your first-born all rolled into one," said Steve Williams, 51, an usher at AT&T Park as he gathered with Giants employees at the start of the parade in the financial district. "I'm on cloud nine."

Fans crowded the sidewalks and flooded the Civic Center before the parade's start at 11 a.m., with the diehards showing up before dawn to stake out spots ahead of the festivity. Many skipped work and pulled their children out of school so they could catch what they said was a once-in-a-lifetime celebration.

"I want to see all the hometown heroes and share the smiles of all the fans who've been waiting their entire lives for this," said Teddy Hutcherson, 31, who found a prime viewing spot behind a barricade.

Under a sunny sky, street lamps were festooned with orange and black balloons - the team's colors. Large banners proclaimed the Giants as this year's World Series champions, as if the crowd needed to be reminded the team had won baseball's highest honor.

Mayor Gavin Newsom was giddy as he described growing up a "fanatical Giants fan" and dreaming about playing for the team one day.

"I thought I'd see (a World Series championship) in my lifetime, but never thought I'd see it as mayor," Newsom said. "It's incomprehensible that this happened."

He even swept aside talk of politics when asked about his victory in the state's lieutenant governor's race on Tuesday.

"Nobody here cares about that, this puts it all in perspective," he said.

Civic dignitaries and the team were riding in a line of open-topped vehicles driven along Montgomery Street in the Financial District, then down Market Street to the Civic Center for a celebration and presentation of a key to the city by Newsom.

Thousands of raucous fans had gathered at the same spot beneath City Hall's orange-lit dome on Monday night to watch an outdoor big screen television that captured the team's Game 5 win over the Texas Rangers. The Giants finally achieved World Series domination that eluded the team in 1962, 1989 and 2002.

things may be bigger in texas, but we're GIANTS!!

I'm a season ticket holder since the days of candlestick, and I still can't believe this is real!! knowing that we were counted out, laughed at, disrespected, and favored to lose in the FIRST ROUND only makes it all the better!!

THE SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS ARE WORLD CHAMPIONS...FACT!! LET'S GO BE WEIRD!!

What a great feeling seeing the orange confetti rain down on the San Francisco Giants. The Giants got alot of love yesterday. Well deserved. Go Giants.

I flew home from college in Vermont JUST for 36 hours so I could go to the parade. Diehard Giants fan born and raised here, and it was absolutely worth the 2 cross-country flights in 3 days (and the 5-hour delay I'm experiencing in Philadelphia right now!).

We drove down to San Francisco for this and I would do it again a million times over. It was the greatest spectacle to see hundreds of thousands of people soooo happy and giddy. And I LOVED seeing all the kids with their parents (my 3 year old included) and sharing in the moment. You cant even articulate the atmosphe in the city and cant fully "get it" unless you were there. It was amazing and I cant wait for Opening Day next year!

I was a little disappointed that my boy Timmy was wearing a Red Bull hat. It could have at least had a Giants logo on it. Then again, I wasn't mad at Sergio Romo for wearing a "The Beaners" Shirt. Either way, this was an amazing World Series and long overdue. I hope the rangers can get one soon (as long as it doesn't interfere with the Giants). The Rangers have a great team with some good characters.

Timmy is sponsored by red bull...I heard on the radio that there was a drawing to win the cap he wore during the parade...

He and Joe Buck just made all of us in the Bay Area appreciate Kruk and Kuip that much more. My mute button got a workout during this post season.

As one of the million (estimated) that skipped shool or work to share in a lifetimes dream, it was wonderous. I was the happiest I have seen the City in years and I was proud to be a left coaster. Come to think of it, I am always proud to be Cali.

What an experience!! Pot wafting all around and the police (as usual) didn't care. People cheering over a loose orange balloon. Cheering and sometimes booing the police as they helped keep a beach ball in play. And actually seeing Willie Mays up close was the topper!!!!!

My daughters told their bosses, "I won't be in but you know where to find me?" It was understood that this was the place to be.

All that emotion, laughter, disbelief, and incredible happiness. What a great day!

I remember indulging once in the city. A cop was too busy harassing a homeless guy minding his own business to care about me.

HP - There were well over a million people at the parade today not "thousands". Get your facts straight.

It was a carpet of confetti on Montgomery. After all the players and Giants' staff passed, I made a mad dash--mad because it was impossible to move-- to Civic Center Plaza. I think I should have gone directly to Civic Center from home. I don't know the capacity but it was close. I took pictures of people standing on or next street signals. It was extremely warm for November. I was really tired but enjoyed it nonetheless.
