Keep buying that bottled water.
But seriously 99.9% of plastic in the ocean comes from societies gutters.
Sounds stupid but if the sweepers misses it and you dont pick it up,
out to the ocean it goes. And just to throw this in here because nobody gizes an F obviously by the post count Platic IS Oil. First it doesnt biodegrate and it CAN NEVER mix with water.
Once its consumable size anything in the ocean WILL eat it.

Quite disheartening. My faith in human beings to have evolved enough to take responsibility for the untold damage we are doing has long since vanished.

We (collectively) will only 'get it' when we go the way of these poor creatures due to our willful negligence.
