At a press conference Wednesday, President Obama said the economy is still in a "ditch." It was a somber revision of a metaphor he's been developing for months -- that the economy is a car, which the Republicans drove into a ditch, and which only the Democrats can drive forward onto higher ground.

"I think what they want right now is Democrats and Republicans both pushing some more to get the car on level ground. And we haven't done that," he said on Wednesday. "At the very least we were pushing in opposite directions."
