No way getting a $1.58 Taxi Ride in Delhi. No Way. A 3 Wheeler Auto Rickshaw, may be.

And be prepared to shell out/haggle with driver during off peak hours.

That's a DDS KST-260 on the dash of that LA cab. They should raise their rates and install something developed in the 21st century. ;) (not that anyone cares). carry on...

Oh folks, this is already history. Very soon the American dollar will sink-lower. with a future inflation coming up [already on its way]. at least between now and after x-mas.

In California regular gasoline is already over $3.- a gallon
In wall st market $87.- a oil-barrel, and moving up

HAA HAA IF we could get gasoline for 3 dollars per gallon we would jump for joy. In Europe 7 dollars, In Finland 7.5 dollars per gallon.

A lot of the differences have more to do with rates of conversion for the US dollar than the actual cost of the ride. Some countries are hard currency economies where the dollar doesn't buy much.

It also ignores the black market conversion rates. On the Indian subcontinent, you get a lot more Rupees if you convert your dollars through the black market rather than at the "official" rate. This is especially true in Nepal.

Zurich seriously... those rich bastards , must be nice

i'd like to see these prices compared to the average wages or gas prices in these areas. would be more meaningful.

As a (ex) Londoner I'd say if it is only 2 miles why not walk? Zurich may be pricey but the wages are sky high.

Guess I'm in the wrong line of work. If you walk quickly you can cover 2 miles in about a half hour. So if the taxi costs, say, $12, you're saving $24/hour by walking, and you're getting good exercise. I can't believe cabs can charge that much.
01:58 PM on 11/05/2010
Yeah except when you don't have that half hour to walk somewhere.

Not to mention the cars, in many European countries, Mercedes is the most used car as a taxi and normally would kill you tax wise so taxi owners (yes, in Europe, a taxi owner is a small business owner) can write off the car taxes over a set number of years.

Well i got family members that drive taxis so we have calculated these. And in the long run (that taxis are used) the Mersedes infact becomes a cheaper option that buying a competitors because of Longer maintanance periods, reliability and better resale values etc . So it is not so much of that taxis are nicer cars. And you are right there are tax benefits they get. But still in comparison the gasoline prices pay big part of the costs. And of course Business taxes etc etc.

Taxis in Cotonou, Benin, were usually between $0.25 and $0.50 for up to a ten mile ride.
10:07 PM on 11/11/2010
Taxis are cheap in my town, also. Less than .50 (USD) in Tuxpan, Veracruz, Mexico. What a country!

Oslo has second highest cab rates in the world, but I suppose it's the price one has to pay for world's highest standard of living.
