Great Gatsby Casting: Which Actress Should Play Daisy?

Huffington Post     First Posted: 11/06/10 04:59 PM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 07:10 PM ET

Via Deadline New York: Who should play Daisy Buchanan in Baz Luhrmann's Great Gatsby Film? The actress would star opposite Leonardo DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire in the lead male roles. Mike Fleming from Deadline New York has the scoop on Luhrmann's short list:

Among the names I've heard on Baz's list: Keira Knightley, Amanda Seyfried, Blake Lively, Abbie Cornish, Michelle Williams and Scarlett Johansson. Aside from those names, I've heard that Luhrmann is also sweet on Natalie Portman, the Black Swan star who is in wide demand and recently was courted for Gravity and then dropped out of Pride, Prejudice and Zombies, a role for which Lionsgate likes Johansson and Bradley Cooper. Daisy was played in the last film by Mia Farrow, and I thought she was a bit flighty and delicate and not as manipulative as she was in F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel. The film is set up at Sony Pictures Entertainment.

Check out our slideshow of Luhrmann's choices below and vote: who would you cast as Daisy Buchanan?

Okay, okay. If Blake doesn't get it, I agree Scarlett is good to go.

Keira and Michelle all the way.

No way with Scarjo or Blake Lively.

Carey Mulligan (sp?) would make a perfect Daisy.

I really hope the film is a straight-on adaptation, not another lame modern musical re-imagining by Luhrmann.

The only one smug looking enuf for Daisy is Scarlett, whose physiognomy is rather unpleasant.

A lot like a stable of racehorses, isn't it?

Win, place - or show?

I don't care for her in Mad Men - because she does a good job playing a character I find repugnant - so yes, I'm sure she'd be better than most...

Amanda Seyfried and Natalie Portman are the only ones who have a frail enough look for me to find them believable as Daisy Buchanan. Since Daisy is a blonde, I'd go with Amanda.

I agree with your first statement but I think Natalie Portman would be an amazing Daisy.

The last version was so bad I thought nobody would ever again attempt this movie. Good luck to them.

I tend to agree. The 70s version had an amazing cast but the filmmakers didn't get the book at all. If anyone can pull it off, tho, Baz can.

This is a quintessentially American role. The actress should be American through and through and able to pull off upper-crust effortlessly. I love Scarlett, but she often has a streetwise edge to her that would be a bit out of keeping with this character. Natalie Portman, however, would nail it.

Blake Lively would make a great Jordan Baker, Daisy's best friend who has the doomed affair with Nick. She has the perfect look for that role.

I would probably cast Keira Knightley out of this group because she is usually great in period movies. Abbie Cornish might be good as well. I have to say I've never understood all the fuss about Scarlett Johansen. I do not think she is a particularly good actress. Her voice is too monotone or something. She reminds me at times of a female Keanu Reeves in the acting department. I thought I was the only one who noticed this, but I remember seeing a major film critic (Richard Roper maybe??) commenting on her less than great acting and monotonal delivery. So I know others have noticed it too. To be fair, I did somewhat like Scarlet's performance more in that period movie with Natalie Portman (I can't think of the title now). But overall, I just think she is somewhat overrated as an actress.

There is no reason for this movie to be remade...other than money of course.

Agreed. I always feel like a book is forever compromised after being made into a movie.

Like the producer said to the starlet: I'm going to make something out of you...

Starlet: What?

Producer: MONEY

Of the 8 choices given, I prefer Keira Knightley and Rebecca Hall. Knightley is probably the most talented of the group, and she appears to have done more period pieces. I realize Natalie Portman has talent as well, but I just don't like how she rubs her personal politics in people's faces.

I forgot to mention that Baz Luhrmann is a terrible director. I don't like any of his movies. He's just not a good storyteller so his adaptation will probably be terrible.
