I am a recently retired US Army Infantryman, and I have been overseas. The funny thing about games like this is the fact that people that play them think they “know”. I have had people that never held a real weapon talk to me about choices of weapons in actual Combat. Why do you use “weapon A” when “weapon B” is so much better?
And personally if it is not Mario battling mushrooms the combat games are too much for me to play.
It does give people that are outside the military the impression they know what is going on. I have has discussions of tactics used on the actual battlefield, and debated them with twenty something “Armchair Generals” of the virtual battlefield.
I am not saying at all that playing games promote violence, or is a recruiting tool, because in my experience, love for the game does not equate to love of physical combat.

Have to agree. These games enbolden and at the same time desensitize society. Most people have no idea the collection of variables, the limitations, the excitatory of the sense that play out in real combat, most notably the after effects of combat. Until they see real blood spilling out from a gun shot wound and worse the suffering just before death...it's all games.

I guess it's fair guess you don't own the 'Sound of Music,' or watch Mr. Rogers or Sesame Street. All joking aside, there's a lot of adrenalin rush and testing of yourself in other more positive things than in media that glorifies death and violence. I hope you've also included some of these in your life because culture and media is throwing a lot of dark at us with not much hope of getting out. It breaks my heart most when it's targeted at impressionable kids and teens because there's a long life to live if you think that's all there is.

Holy! There is something fundamentally wrong with this advertisement and it's not about kids or teens killing. It occurred to me: 1.) They are in the desert 2.) Ordinary citizens fighting 3.) There is no defined enemy 4.) And drum roll! The release date is 911 reversed. We're giving it right back to them. How sad this shapes the minds of all!

They should make a video game about Jesus or Ghandi. You can choose either avatar and it is your mission to spread love and peace and if you don't succeed, then the mobs crucify you.

I bet even todays Christian would find it boring and would opt for the violence. What an illusion we live in!

That sounds like the most boring game ever.

Kobe, Kobe, Kobe. You be a natural action hero my brotha. After the NBA I can see it now: "Return of the Mamba - This Time It's Personal" followed by the sequels "Fatboy Leaves Town" and "Falsely Accused"

It is interesting looking at the comments posted on this board. I am curious about the age of those who are making the assertion that playing violent video games makes you more violent. This seems to be the same phobia that parents in the 50's had about comics, then movies, then music...

After several studies, there is no conclusive evidence that video games increase violence caused by those who play them. The average age for a video game player is 34 so the content is certainly appropriate for that age group. If someone under the age of 17 is playing the game, it is a failure on the art of the parents.

I actually enjoy many violent video games and have never hurt anyone. I also own the first two Godfather movies and have never joined the mafia, I enjoy horror movies, but have never tortured anyone.

P. S to above because of length

As for no evidence video games increase violence, I've spent the better part of my career selling advertising. Literally, the bottom line is that messages and images sell, and encourage consumers to take action. Plus, there's a lot of money to be made from it. Why else would they use Kobe? When all the fuss happened to Tiger Woods, perhaps the main topic was how it was going to affect the $value of his endorsements to himself and the companies he was represented. Maybe the ad community could teach the researchers something about "conclusive evidence."

Not everyone's going to become violent because of "action" videos...I'm only worried about the few for whom it sticks. To make it worse, these types of videos give them a lot of how-to ideas, almost like instruction manuals. And as for kids not getting their hands on anything they want, especially if it's forbidden and even with parents skilled in the art of raising kids, get real!

I also like the 'Godfather' movies, don't have 'The Sound of Music,' and have a comic book collection. But what I'm suggesting is that I hope you have a balance in your life that also allows a lot of light and hope into it. Otherwise, there's always the world of 'The Matrix,' 'Mad Max,' 'The Terminator,' etc.

Celtics, I am actually 31, so yes I did watch Mr. Rogers (RIP) and was a big fan. That man's voice was very calming.

I am not disputing the fact that images sell, although Mature rated games do not sell as much as E or T rated games. But that is a far cry from saying that they are linked to violent behavior. If you believe that playing a video game will teach you how to fire a gun, that is simply incorrect.

I completely agree with you that everyone needs balance and anything not done in moderation is harmful. I only manage to find maybe 30 minutes a day to play games, but it is very relaxing. However, researchers even studied those who play far more and found no conclusive evidence that any form of media forces consumers to act violently, which is what many in this forum have stated. If this was true, Japan would be the Wild West. I would argue that our government's policy of perpetual warfare, dehumanization of victims of our military (calling them collateral damage..)... is to blame far more than any video game with the level of violence in our society.

I'm anti war but this goes beyond a war. It's a video game. I guess you send flowers to the families of the Blinky in PacMan every-time they get eaten. Lighten up. It's a game.

your right. it's not like our country is being swallowed whole by the private military industry. it's not like you see a military commerical at every break or a military presence at every single football game over the weekend. it's not like we're being brainwashed to think invading and killing innocent people is just and necessary.

my bad.
