Lewis Black: Christmas Reminds Me Of My Divorce

SUMMER MOORE   11/ 8/10 06:57 AM ET   AP

Lewis Black

"I'm Dreaming of a Black Christmas" (Riverhead Books, $19.95), by Lewis Black: Comedian Lewis Black is famous for being angry. In his new book, "I'm Dreaming of a Black Christmas," he goes after what would seem like an easy target for him: Christians at Christmas. But instead of his typical ranting without remorse, he's apologetic.

Black spends every Christmas reflecting on his lack of a family. Since his divorce, he hasn't trusted his taste in women. Christmas makes him think that he's failed because he doesn't have a loving wife and children. "So I lie there, supine, pondering my failure to create a life beyond my own."

After waking up and contemplating his loneliness, Black gets out of bed. He writes checks to various charities, always careful not to give too much away because of a fear that at any moment he could still lose everything. "My life always seems to be moments away from being ironic."

He then takes a long bath, thinking about his childhood holidays when he received nothing more than mismatched socks; how there were years when he was broke; and how he now feels guilty about drinking good wine and having nice sheets.

Black isn't someone who asks for forgiveness. He's built a reputation on being able to tear apart society, politics and religion in a fit of screaming rage thinly cloaked as a comedy routine. "Black Christmas," however, is packed with regret.

Black spends most of the book trying to justify what he's saying rather than saying it. "My editor thinks what I have here is `too discursive.'"

He tries to be funny by showing readers how selfish he's become, but it comes off as sad.

Clearly, he wants a family, but concedes that it's too late.

"Black Christmas" is a story about the holiday season, but rather than being the smart comedy that readers might expect from Black, this one is depressing.

I can empathize with Louis Black. I've come to believe that a healthy, loving family is a rare and precious thing. My family has always been my friends, the people who know and love me, the
biological part doesn't really mean all that much in the end. Extending the concept of family makes the world a happier and less lonely place at least for me.

I was done with her, I moved on, now I have the best wife I could imagine. Life rolls on.

Lewis, if you want to get unconditional love, go to your local shelter and adopt a dog. Or better yet, adopt two. You will have an abundance of love!

Holidays are tough on everyone. He can come to my house, if he wants. There is a Starbucks in town. I can see it now, "The Man Who Came to Dinner" remade yet again.

There's always a road not travelled. Don't beat yourself up about it. How many suburb bound parents wanted to experience travel and do stand-up comedy?

Karnack envisions Lewis inviting some singles over at Christmas this year, and cooks a turkey with stuffing, or orders one, and puts in plenty of spirits and/or treats. Happy Holidays.

I love Lewis. He is funny and perceptive. There is someone for everyone that will accept you and love you as you are, a rich comedian. Stop dreaming about someone, go out and find her. Staying in a lonely room isn't how to attract a lady, Lewis. I know--use plot number 12 from the Hallmark channel--pretend you are a down and out drifter and be taken in by a noble caring woman who lets you do handyman work at the ophanage. Am I helping?

I love this guy. Saw him at his comedy show in Minnesota and I have all of his books. He writes as funny as his stand up is.

I hope he also reflects on the literally hundreds of thousand of people he helps by letting us know with his rants, that we are NOT alone, that other feel the way we do. Also, do not give up. I had a 25+ year relationship that had sapped me for years (should have pulled the pin earlier like him). I found a perfect mate. Our life is different because of the many family members who do not have any link other than us, but we have that and no one will ever take that from us, we will not let them. Lewis, you are loved universally, I wish you could come over, hang out in the garage, have a beer.
