After Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford scored on a 1-yard run in the third quarter of Sunday's game against the New York Jets, kicker Jason Hanson wasn't available to kick the extra point due to a knee injury.

Coach Jim Schwartz put rookie defensive lineman Ndamukong Suh in to kick the extra point. Suh had won a friendly kicking competition in training camp, according to the Detroit News.

Suh's kick hit the right post and missed, giving the Lions a 13-10 lead. The missed extra point turned out to be vital. Despite having a 20-10 lead in the fourth quarter, the Lions lost to the Jets 23-20 in overtime after a New York kicker Nick Folk's 30-yard field goal.

"Ndamukong is our backup field goal kicker; he's done it in practice," Schwartz said after the game. "You guys have been to practice before and seen him do it. We have a lot of confidence that he could kick it."
