Tea Party Republicans Tim Scott & Adam Kinzinger Tapped For House Transition Team

Tea Party House Transition

WASHINGTON — To help lead the GOP's transition to power in the House, Republicans on Monday tapped two newly elected congressmen who drew tea party backing in their campaigns.

Adam Kinzinger of Illinois and Tim Scott of South Carolina, who won endorsements by Sarah Palin and support from tea party activists, are part of a 22-member team charged with crafting new rules and smoothing the GOP's shift from minority to majority.

The team, led by Rep. Greg Walden of Oregon and headquartered in the basement of the Capitol, was to gather over Chinese food Monday evening in Republican leader John Boehner's office suite and meet again Tuesday.

The team includes several seasoned veterans and influential members: 15-term Rep. David Dreier of California, in line for his second stint as head of the powerful Rules Committee; Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin, in line to head the Budget Committee; and Rep. Pete Sessions of Texas, the campaign committee chief.

Rep. Doc Hastings of Washington, one of a large crop of GOP lawmakers who came to Congress 16 years ago, the last time Republicans gained control of the House, is part of the group.

Two other freshmen, Cory Gardner of Colorado and Martha Roby of Alabama, are also on the roster.

Walden said he didn't choose the team based on whether they had tea party backing, telling reporters last week that he wasn't sure whether those he was recruiting were supported by the conservative-libertarian movement. "It's a nice cross-section of our Republican conference," he said of the group.

But it's clear Republicans are aware that the grass-roots movement that helped propel them to big wins in last week's elections will be an important part of their new House majority and bolstered Senate minority.

In a nod to the new blood, Boehner, R-Ohio, and Rep. Eric Cantor, R-Va., in line to be speaker and majority leader, told freshmen they would get "a larger voice" on major decisions next year. In a letter to the newly elected members, they said the class would get two posts – instead of the customary one – on the influential panel that hands out committee assignments, as well as a representative in the ranks of the House leadership.

The first-termers comprise "no ordinary freshman class, and this is no ordinary time for our nation," Boehner and Cantor wrote.

Many of the newly elected Republicans are political novices, including a pizzeria owner and a gospel-singing farmer. All four first-termers on the transition team have some degree of experience in elected office; Scott and Gardner have been state legislators while Roby has served as a city councilwoman and Kinzinger on a county board.

Freshmen arrive on Capitol Hill for orientation next week, when Republicans and Democrats will also elect leaders.

Sounds like the tea on that committee will be well diluted.

Tim Scott or Charlie Rangel, Clyburn, Sweet Maxine, JJ Jr.

Makes for a very nice contrast, doesn't it?

Allan West, Sue Martinez, Marco Rubio - That's change I can believe in.

Would have been nice for the outgoing Democrats to schedule hundreds of relentless hearings to conduct oversight, but then again, it's not their thing. Suffering from a business inferiority complex, they are always 'careful' not to appear anti-business because otherwise the Republicans would make a big deal about it. Great to hear that worked out for them......

yeah me to. i am black. and this doesn't impress me at all. they never thought about all the racist names their fellow teabaggers were calling Obama. because when they did that they called all of us blacks those racist names. but theirs always ones of us that will do their bidding. we have our own names for them. when he does what they want they Will throw him under the bus.

Exactly and the sad thing is this...When they want to attack poor minorities they will sit back and let Tim Scott, Allen West and Marco Rubio do it so when folks complain they can say we didn't say it...They did!

This country will be much better place when black's votes are split 50/50. Today's Latinos are not there yet but closer than black. Asian's is about 50/50.

It's attitudes like yours that show the true colors of the GOP. You look at them based upon skin color.
06:04 PM on 11/08/2010
Wrong - Dems are the one always saying there aren't enough blacks/minorities in the Republican Party. They also said the Tea Party was all white etc.
The Rigth just looks at political views not color/race/ethnicity.

As a black man I don't care what color he is, I will NEVER EVER vote republican, because I refuse to vote against my own best interest and the best interest of my country which I SERVED and DEFENDED HONORABLY... I don't know him and I will not call him any names because it is not necessary, because one I'm not republican so I don't have to call people names and two I will NEVER vote republican anyway. So ONE black man being elected by the republicans or ESPECIALLY one being endorsed by Sarah Palin is gonna change my view of the Republican party. My great grandfather was lynched and my grandparents marched with Dr. King for my civil rights and the civil rights of this gentlemen and all African Americans with their White and Jewish brothers and sisters. I would never vote for this man, but if he wants to pal around with people who would deny others their civil rights more power to him.

Fanned. I'm a white woman and a former Army officer and I agree with you completely. The bagger-publicans have my contempt for the ways in which they have sold out our country. I will NEVER vote for them. I will actively fight against them. But their days are numbered. The tide of history is on our side. This link says it better than I can. They are literally a dying breed.

Fanned. That's like McCain putting Palin on the ticket to pick up the Hillary vote. Like women will vote for any woman, regardless of her views, just because she is a woman. Wrong. First of all, most of the republican females I see running for office are not really women, they are caricatures of what the right wing wants their women to be.  I never say never, but I will never vote for a republican.

Hmmm.... Either the Transition Team does jack chit or the job is so craptacular that no one else will do it. If they put neophytes in charge that is clear sign that that job is either worthless or He//ish.

A lot of blacks in S.C. voted for Tim Scott. I guess liberals would call them misguided. When half of the black and hispanic population start voting GOP, Dem party is over. Just a matter of time :)

The Republicans have their foot on almost everyone's neck, and so do the democrats to a lesser degree!

The problem is the U.S. has essentially two conservative/corportist parties: The Democrats. for the most part, have become the moderate/Rockerfeller/Nixon Republicans of a generation ago, while the Republican Party has become a social-Darwinist/lun@atic party that apparently seeks to return America to something resembling Dickensian England! The bulk of the views of the modern Republican Party are completely outside the spectrum of legitimate debate within the rest of civilized world.
04:41 PM on 11/08/2010
Keep dreaming.... The GOP is turning more and more far-right daily and alienating all minorities with their constant racist ways. Tim Scott has been used by the GOP and tea party. They want nothing to do with him, except some of the female baggers.

Wow, seriously?

You feel comfortable in the modern era using 'subservient black man' language? That's incredibly disrespectful and racist of you. Not knowing this man, you still feel fine to demean his election by his district based on....?
