10-Year-Old Mother A Hoax? Romanian Neighbors Say Child Mom Older Than Reported

10yearold Mother

BUCHAREST, Romania — The former neighbors of a Romanian girl who gave birth last week in Spain claim that she is significantly older than 10.

Neighbors outside the shabby four-story apartment building where the girl spent her early years before moving to Spain said Tuesday they were indignant about "lies" that she was just 10 years old when she became a mother.

Ionel Mutu, a 43-year-old plasterer, was among several residents of Bucharest's impoverished Ferentari district who told The Associated Press they believed the girl was between age 13 and 15.

"This is a lie," Mutu told the AP, referring to media reports. "I knew the family, and they moved to Spain in the late 1990s with the girl, and she must be about 14 now."

The reported birth has shocked Spaniards and created an international sensation, although in Romania it has barely registered. In Spain, the Andalusian regional health ministry had told reporters the new mother was 10 years old, but it was not clear what documents that was based on.

The girl's mother told reporters in Spain last week that she's delighted to have a new granddaughter and doesn't understand the fuss the birth has caused. She said the baby's father was a 13-year-old boy who was still in Romania.

She also said since they are Romanian Gypsies, or Roma, it is their custom to marry very young.

But former Roma neighbors of all ages claimed that the mother was exaggerating or lying about several key facts – the age at which Roma become married and the age of her daughter.

One man who identified himself only as Gigi recalled that he had once given the mother a tin of formula for her daughter when she ran out. He said the girl's mom Olimpia and her husband were "decent people" who worked for the state garbage agency Rebu.

"She is 14 or even 15," he said.

Moderatu Anghel, a former plaster, agreed that the girl's family moved to Spain in the 1990s and said she was about "13 or 14."

Viorica Melu, 63, a Roma woman who has six children, said she was angry that the girl's age had been reported as being so young. She said Roma girls can unofficially get married in their mid-teens but not at age 10.

"Just because (Roma) are not educated, doesn't mean they haven't got a mind and don't know how to judge things," said Melu.

Arranged "marriages" for girls reaching puberty are relatively common among Roma, who make up about 1.5 million of Romania's 22 million people. Those marriages are not recognized by the state, which requires girls to be 16 and have parental consent before they can marry.

Maybe the Gypsies should start thinking about getting a Head for sex , rather than "impregnate children" to Procreate. Time to face up to the reality that children ---just neeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeed to be children while they can. Adulthood comes too soon.

EXACTLY what I said on the original thread:

"This is a hoax. Either she is not the mother, or she is significanly older than 10 years old."

If I were the kind of person to say "I told you so," this would be a perfect oppportunity.

You will probably find she was born in Kenya and it has a picture of Orly Taitz under a Birther banner on it.

A couple of years ago there was a story of an 11 year old from the same area giving birth, if you look at the pictures no way was the girl eleven, I wonder iif there is a reason to lie about having the youngest child giving birth, or if there is another reason to pretend the girls are younger...is there a financial motive., a have sex with my child motive, a rivallry among the clans?

Gypsies are thieves and liars so being conned by this one is no surprise. We ran into some of them in Italy and, trust me, they do nothing legal to earn money. It's all about conning and stealing.

No surprising. It sounded kind of weird to me when I first heard it.

This is what happens when your birth certificate is written in crayon..Still nothing okay about this at all. In fact Im almost tempted to say its slightly worse now, because then that means she was old enough for someone to tell her its fine to have sex, get pregnant and she was old enough to probably understand that and be told to accept it as normal behavior...
05:19 PM on 11/09/2010
Well, I know quite a few 14 year olds who, despite being told it is NOT ok to have sex... still do.
05:22 PM on 11/09/2010
You should tell that to the men (and boys) who like to have sex with girls. Lots do - fathers, uncles, neighbors, brothers, priests - lots.

Why everyone calls this ethnic group "Romas" and how this is less offensive than their original ethnical name that is "gypsies", and who decided "gypsy" is offensive and why?

I think "gypsy" became too generic, embracing peoples of very different ethnicities, i.e both Irish travellers and the Roma.
01:23 PM on 11/09/2010
In my country of origin/Eastern Europe/ we have a significant population of this ethnic group and except for the official press I can assure you that no one calls them "Roma"......it is a very silly "politically correct" name for a group that is known as " gypsies" everywhere by everyone......

The Roma are very tribal people. Their normal custom concerning marriage is about 14 to 17 year of age. This lot sounds like the "Trailer Park" version of Roma. I was raised by the Roma here in the US ( from central California and the East Bay Area of SF).They were quite shocked to meet their southern Counterparts in Kentucky.
They had jobs, lived in houses, and got college educations, but there was the "new immigrants " in the 1960s who still acted like they did in Europe, and what they called "Captured by the Man" ( I can't remember the exact word they used right now to describe them). Needless to say, this sort of situation is why most Roma decedents here in the states don't admit to being Roma anymore. The Nine Tribes are no longer, except maybe somewhere in Russia. And this sort of embarrassment is why if you look up famous Gypsies in Russia, you find pages and pages, but in the United States you find only one name, Elvis Presley.
