American Muslim Hajj

(RNS) Some 12,000 American Muslims are expected to join an estimated 2.5 million pilgrims in the Saudi Arabian city of Mecca for the hajj, the annual Islamic pilgrimage that this year runs between Nov. 14 and 18.

The number of pilgrims expected is about the same as in recent years, said Nail Al-Jubeir, a spokesman for the Saudi Arabian embassy in Washington, D.C., which limits pilgrims to making the pilgrimage no more than once every five years.

Islam requires followers who are physically and financially capable to complete the hajj once in their lifetime.

Overcrowding and catastrophic stampedes have led Saudi authorities to issue special hajj visas; since 1990, more than 2,500 pilgrims have been killed in stampedes, while hundreds more die each year as a result of sickness, heart attacks, traffic accidents and other incidents.

Most problems have occurred at an elevated platform known as the Jamarat, from which pilgrims throw stones at walls representing the devil. To ease overcrowding, Saudi authorities have gradually expanded the Jamarat to five levels and added exits.

Despite efforts to limit the number of pilgrims, hundreds of thousands of mainly Saudi residents still try to perform hajj without permits. "Quite a few people get turned back because of overcrowding," said Al-Jubeir.

Many unauthorized pilgrims evade detection and camp out in the hills surrounding Mecca, where Muslims believe Islam's prophet Muhammad received his first revelation from God in 610 A.D. "It becomes a sanitation nightmare," he said.

For American Muslims, the most difficult part of the journey may be the return home. In recent years, many Muslims returning from travel abroad have complained about religious profiling and lengthy searches and questioning at airports and border crossings.

In response, Muslim civil rights groups have issued travel advisories for pilgrims, telling them to expect questioning and advising them what types of questions are legal, such as name and residency, and which are not, including questions about religious or political beliefs.

Good to know:

(Meet the Arab, John Van Ess, 1943, p. 29.)
At Mekka, Allah was the chief of the gods and the special deity of the Quraish, the prophet’s tribe. Allah had three daughters: Al Uzzah (Venus) most revered of all and pleased with human sacrifice; Manah, the goddess of destiny, and Al Lat, the goddess of vegetable life. Hubal and more than 300 others made up the pantheon. The central shrine at Mekka was the Kaaba, a cube like stone structure which still stands though many times rebuilt.
Imbedded in one corner is the black stone, probably a meteorite, the kissing of which is now an essential part of the pilgrimage."

A truly enlightened guy. He wrote this in 1943. Since then a lot of truth about Islam has been written in the west by Muslims themselves rather than Islamophobes from the last century.

From the beginning, I think.

Book 019, Number 4366:

It has been narrated by 'Umar b. al-Khattib that he heard the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) say: I will expel the Jews and Christians from the Arabian Peninsula and will not leave any but Muslim.

Book 019, Number 4363

“You should know that the earth belongs to Allah and His Apostleâ€

Prophet Muahmmed was the most beloved son of Arabia, born to the most powerful tribe. At the age of 40 he called upon the people of Mecca and told them about Islam. That day people followed because this man was a man of great compassion he truly walks the talk. So the leaders where astonished that so many ppl quickly abandoned the paganistc rituals of the forefathers for this man. The young and few followers where quickly attacked, dragged in the streets, beaten, humiliated starved, killed and persecuted…these devils literally did it to their own sons and daughters who followed the prophet Muhammad...all for power, sad

Out of the blue, were powerful Arabs in Medina, who were viciously at war with each other, all of sudden heard about a great man, and decided to welcome him as none other but their leader. Prior to that, the Prophet ordered the first 72 Muslims to escape to the great King of the Horn of Africa King Negus who was a pious Christian King…that was the first victory for Muslims who took refuge and were welcomed. The King also embraced Islam and stood by the Prophetthe Arab leaders were shocked as to how the news was spreading like fire…ppl were converting in mass numbers…the Arabs of Medina set up meetings with the Prophet and finally called him to Medina to lead the first society of Muslims. Those Arabs are known as the Helpers and took in a family from Mecca

When were non muslims excluded?
03:38 PM on 11/16/2010
Since you are not a Muslim why would you want to go there anyway? Try going into some higher layers of a Mormon Temple, Brahman Hindu Temples in India, many Hasidic Synagogues, certain areas of the Vatican. Oops.......you can't go there either.

I would like to walk around a rock. I used to do that when I was a little kid with my brothers. It was a fun kid's game. That must be a really interesting rock! Do you think it's from Superman's planet? Or maybe the Planet of the Apes? Early Arabs believed that it was a piece of the moon. Do you think that's true Riff? Has a geologist ever looked at it or are scientists not allowed in Mecca?

That's just crazy. That a sovereign nation would have a concept that it's airspace was its own and did not belong to the U.S. I'm usually right with you Major, but I'm missing the point on this one.

Paganism existed as an evolution of the even more ancient practice of venerating dead ancestors. All the ancient Gods of Egypt, the Maya and Hindus can be traced to a historic root of persons that were once esteemed in life, then in death.

The Pantheon of the Levant, Aegean and Northern Mediterranean (Canaanite, Greek and Roman gods in particular) can be directly linked to the historic persons of Genesis.

Adam becomes Zeus, Eve becomes Hera, the Garden of Eden becomes the Garden of Hesperides. Hera's orchard in the West (remember Adam and Eve were expelled East of Eden) is replete with venerated golden apple bearing trees and guarded by the serpent-like dragon, Ladon.

Mohammed's father was a priest of Hubal. Hubal had three daughters.

Ba'al had three daughters.

Allah is Hubal is Ba'al. Ba'al is Adam is Zeus. Astarte is Hera is Eve.

Islam elevates Ba'al to the status of the God Head, El

I wouldn't say these people should not make the Hajj. I would only ask (as I do of all pilgrimages to "holy sites"): Isn't all the earth a "holy site"? and, What if these millions would devote themselves to a pilgrimage for the poor, or a pilgrimage to bring peace, or a pilgrimage for ending all pilgrimages at the foot of our common humanity? Simple, respectful questions.

I would recommend reading the chapter on Hajj in the Autobiography of Malcolm X for a first hand account. I would also recommend the chapter in 'Even Angels Ask'. These books explain Hajj better from an outsider perspective than I can provide, since I've never been.

That being said, there are many aspects to Hajj that make it a holy pilgrimage. For one, being with millions of different types of people from all over the world has a strong unifying effect. It made Malcolm X change his entire ideology.
03:59 PM on 11/16/2010
After his visit to the Kaabah, Malcom X gave up all his racist ideas and became a member of mainstream Islam. That positive change got him killed. His autobiography led to many other African Americans acceptance of Islam.

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia (AP) — Saudi Arabia’s top government-sanctioned board of senior Islamic clerics has endorsed a fatwa that calls for a ban on female vendors because it violates the kingdom’s strict segregation of the sexes.
The powerful committee said in its ruling that the mixing of sexes is forbidden and women should not seek jobs where they could encounter men.
The decision comes after a conservative preacher was reprimanded in August for violating a government-mandated restriction on fatwas by calling for a boycott of supermarkets employing female cashiers.
Saudi King Abdullah has been trying to clamp down on ultraconservative ideology as part of his bid to modernize the kingdom. But his efforts appear to be challenged by the influential religious scholars, who play a key role in the monarch’s legitimacy.

The schoalrs in KSA are divided to the extreme, and the ones spewing this are not old fashion...I mean the Muslim of the past were much open and women played pivotal roles in Islamic society....for the love of God the person to convert to Islam was a woman who wasn't any ordinary woman but the most powerful woman of her time, a politician, the richest business woman, and the wife of the Prophet Mummed...whenever I get into any talk on this matter, all I do is mention her name, and dicussion closed...operiod...

These men are fearful of ........................? I dont know, but their mentality needs to go because without empowering women and giving them a voice, society is useless...and King Abdullah is taking notice, and hopefully the younger gen are doing so to. As well as the scholars who support women causes...there are plenty yet not as powerful as the ones spewing this...its sad how the power in the world today all falls into the wrong hands... literally everywhere.

I don't even know what to call these men really, however its all up the the KSA women and men who want these men gone, simply stand up to your rights and fight for it.
