Carnival Splendor Fire: Nearly 4,500 Stranded On Cruise Ship Off Mexico (VIDEO)

AP/HuffPost   First Posted: 11/09/10 11:20 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 07:10 PM ET

SAN DIEGO (AP); A cruise ship stranded offshore with 4,500 passengers and crew must be towed slowly into a Mexican port and will not arrive until at least Wednesday night, the Coast Guard said Tuesday.

The Carnival Splendor was 200 miles south of San Diego when an engine room fire cut its power early Monday, according to a statement from Miami-based Carnival Cruise Lines.

The 3,299 passengers and 1,167 crew members were not hurt and the fire was put out, but the 952-foot ship had no air conditioning, hot water or telephone service. Auxiliary power allowed toilets and cold running water to be restored Monday night.

The Mexican Riviera-bound ship, which was drifting about 55 miles off the northern Baja California coast, was in contact with the U.S. Coast Guard, which deployed aircraft and ships along with the U.S. Navy and Mexican Navy.

Mexican seagoing tugboats contracted out of the port of Ensenada were expected to reach the cruise ship at midday Tuesday and arrive back at the port around 8 p.m. PST Wednesday, Coast Guard Petty Officer Kevin Metcalf said.

Metcalf said the tugs, which will be escorted by a Coast Guard cutter, must move slowly because the ship is so big.

Passengers will be taken by bus to California, said Joyce Oliva, a Carnival spokeswoman. She said she was unaware of any safety concerns from passengers or their families about traveling by bus in Mexico.

Ensenada is about 50 miles south of the nearest U.S. border crossing, in San Diego.

Ensenada Port Capt. Carlos Carrillo said some bus companies that normally work with cruise ships docked in Ensenada already take passengers to the border.

"We get a Carnival cruise once a week, on Wednesdays, and they already have everything arranged with some local bus companies and with their own bus companies," Carrillo said. "I don't think it will be much trouble to get the passengers to the border."

Once passengers are dropped off, the Splendor will be towed back to Long Beach, Calif., a journey that will take days. That's why the passengers will be dropped off in Mexico first.

"They didn't want to keep them aboard any longer than they had to," Metcalf said. "They're running only critical systems as of now."

The U.S. Navy aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan, conducting maneuvers 120 miles south of San Diego, was diverted to help the ship. About 70,000 pounds of supplies, including bread, utensils, cups, milk, canned food and other items, will be flown to the Reagan, where helicopters will transfer them to the stricken cruise ship, Cmdr. Greg Hicks said.

The Splendor's seven-day voyage, which began in Long Beach, was canceled and guests will get refunds, reimbursement for transportation costs and a free future cruise of equal value, the cruise line said.

After the fire, passengers were first asked to move from their cabins to the ship's upper deck, but eventually allowed to go back to their rooms. Bottled water and cold food were being provided.

"We know this has been an extremely trying situation for our guests and we sincerely thank them for their patience," Carnival President and CEO Gerry Cahill said in the statement. "Conditions on board the ship are very challenging and we sincerely apologize for the discomfort and inconvenience our guests are currently enduring."

Carnival Corp.'s stock was down about 1 percent Tuesday.

Toni Sweet of San Pedro, Calif., was watching TV when she saw a news report about the stranded ship and realized her cousin Vicky Alvarez and her cousin's husband, Fernando, were on board.

She had dropped the Las Vegas couple off at the dock in Long Beach for the cruise, their first break after caring for their aging parents. She said Vicky was nervous about the trip, but Sweet reassured her everything would be fine. She has not heard from them since the fire.

"It's their first cruise and they were real anxious. I don't think they're going to take another," she said. "Here you want them to have a good time and then this happened."

I want to start off by saying sorry to the passengers aboard the Carnival Splendor. Nobody wants to go through such an ordeal. It is a very trying time when there is no food, no runnning water, no electricity, and most of all, not knowing when help is going to come. I've experienced not having any of these in the days following Hurricane Katrina. I can't say much about being stranded out at sea, but I know the crew is well trained to handle a major situation like that. From what I read in other comments, it seems like the crew was on the ball helping the passengers feel as comfortable as possible. There are many questions that need to be answered, one of them being, 'Should passnegers take legal action?' In my OPINION, I think the passengers are getting an appropriate refund. Unless there is one or more cases where passengers were treated unfairly, then yes, legal action should be taken. As human beings, we have to keep in mind that mechanical things fail. Not everything is preventable.

Imagine me on a cruise ship - in the shower. Look at me. Look at the cruise ship - NOW - look back at me. I have soap all over my body. Now, look back at the cruise-ship. NOW - back at me. I still have soap all over my body. Look at my eyes - I'm not pleased. Now, look back at the shower. It's not working. NOW - look back at me. I'm really pissed off because the show don't work because the engine don't work. NOW - look at the engine room. Hear that? That silence is because the engine don't work. I'm gonna git me a dang horse and trot across the water to get a fresh shower. And guess what? This cruise ship line is toast. NOW. GET THE NAME OF THE CRUISE SHIP LINE AND DO YOUR WORST BECAUSE YOU DIDN'T GET TO SEE ME IN ALL MY GLORY.

People shouldn't complain. Carnival makes the best-tasting Spam in the world.

And I have been informed that they finally got the toilets working again...

I feel a lot safer, and more comfortable, on a cruise ship than on an airliner. At least when the engines stop on a ship one doesn't crash into the nearest corn field.

The eleven o'clock ABC Los Angeles news said they are towing the ship to San Diego.  Guess we will have to wait and see if it shows up in Ensenada or San Diego.  I think it would be safer to tow it to San Diego.  It would be terrible if violence befell the Carnival passengers before they got out of Mexico.

How does a ship that size lose all power? Must be a real tub.

Is there anyplace that needs a new artificial reef?

It might be related to the current meager hourly rate is for filipino deckhands-cum-generator-service-engineers?

I was on that exact ship last year. They had maximized the number of passengers they can stuff on that boat. they took out some of the "clubs" and restaurants to stuff more rooms and people. theres literarly no where to hide on that thing. Oh and the decor...ugh...it looks like it was decorated by a drunk paris hilton, anyways i feel for those people, i would have jumped. we couldnt wait to get off that boat.

I googled them and saw the interior and exterior shoots. How ugly. I could not imagine being able to relax in an atmosphere like that. I guess it's the Walmart of Cruise ships.

I went on a Carnival fock tub journey one time (never again). The most comical moment was one evening at port in Nassau. Next to us was a Disney ship, where the discos were rockin and fireworks were shooting from the smokestack. At main deck our ship, we had a one man band and a tour director who said, "Come on y'all. We can't let them have more fun than us! Let's play charades!"

Having Disney characters running around in costume, and fireworks, has to be paid for. Those who want a floating Disneyland experience should expect to pay considerably more than most other cruise lines charge.

I don't get it. People go on cruises to 'get away', and get stuck with 4500 other people. Give me the backcountry any day.

I agree and everytime I see a new ship it shows all the "activities" like basket ball courts, rock climbing, golf....why not just go to Las Vegas and be surrounded by others doing the same thing...I don't get the new "cruising".....Vegas on the seas.....not fun, bad food in place of good food...lines....forgetaboutit...

When we were younger we did all kinds of more adventurous things, that cost a lot less than a cruise.
Now that we are older, arthritic, and have a little disposable income, we find cruising to be perfect for us. We don't have to move our luggage all the time, they do the moving between ports for us, most cruise lines have very good food (stay off of Cunard, they serve dog food and call it delicious), they have different entertainment and activities all the time, so what's not to like?
Our favorite cruise line is Holland America, with Carnival a close second. Carnival has a really nice tea service in the afternoon, by the way.

Glad you found something you can enjoy. Guess I shouldn't knock it if I haven't tried it, but I'm a 'nature girl' - although it would be fun to enjoy the tea service.

Just got off the phone with Carnival. Olivia told me that the sailing on Nov. 14 of the Splendor has definitely been canceled, but they are not planning to make a decision about the Nov. 21 sailing until Thursday or Friday of this week. She told me that they at the call center do not yet know what the extent of the damages are, and that they don't expect to know until the ship is docked and a thorough inspection has taken place. They are still hopeful that the Nov. 21 sailing will go on as scheduled.
