Thousands of hut villages of the Chumash tribe once canvassed California's expansive coast, including the foothills of Ajuilashmu (Ah-wah-whi-lac-mu), one of the region's de facto sacred sites first inhabited 8,000 years ago--which today is Santa Barbara County. Now, its rock-covered coasts, trails, wine country and wildlife offer a get-close-to-nature respite, while not disturbing it.
