Poll Brings Good & Bad News For Sarah Palin, Other Possible 2012 GOP Presidential Contenders

CHARLES BABINGTON   11/10/10 09:15 PM ET   AP

2012 Presidential Election Poll

WASHINGTON — Sarah Palin is the most polarizing of the potential 2012 Republican presidential candidates, while impressions of Mike Huckabee and Mitt Romney lean more positive, according to an Associated Press-GfK poll. As for the rest – Pawlenty, Barbour, Thune, Daniels – most Americans say, "Who?"

The election, of course, is far away, and polls this early largely reflect name recognition and a snapshot of current popularity. A year before the last presidential election, the top names in public opinion polls were Rudy Giuliani for the Republicans and Hillary Rodham Clinton for the Democrats. Neither won their party's nomination.

But jockeying among the dozen-plus Republicans eyeing a chance to challenge President Barack Obama is under way. Soon, they will be slogging their way to living rooms in snowy Iowa, New Hampshire and other early primary states.

Palin, the former Alaska governor and 2008 vice presidential nominee, is the best-known and most divisive of the bunch. In the wake of her high-profile role in endorsing candidates all over the country, 46 percent of Americans view her favorably, 49 percent unfavorably, and 5 percent don't know enough about her to form an opinion.

Her "don't know" score is considerably lower than those registered by other possible candidates tested in the poll.

Huckabee, the former Arkansas governor who won the 2008 GOP Iowa caucus, received the highest favorability rating, 49 percent. About one in four people has no opinion of him, and 27 percent view him unfavorably.

Romney, the former Massachusetts governor who ran in 2008, had similar results. Nearly a quarter of all Americans have no opinion about him, while 46 percent view him favorably, and 31 percent unfavorably.

In terms of winning the 2012 nomination, the question is how Republican-leaning Americans view the contenders. Palin comes out on top. Among adults who identify themselves as Republicans or GOP-leaning independents, 79 percent view her favorably, and 17 percent unfavorably.

These findings worry many Republican officials. The poll suggests Palin might be able to win the nomination. But among independents_they could be the deciding factor in the general election – just 43 percent hold a favorable view of Palin, compared with 61 percent with a positive view of Obama.

And with half of independents viewing Palin unfavorably, she would have to work hard to persuade a majority of voters to back her.

Republican Rep. Spencer Bachus of Alabama recently said Palin's support for tea party-backed candidates cost the GOP control of the Senate.

Elsewhere among the poll's Republican respondents, 74 percent viewed Huckabee favorably, 10 percent unfavorably. Sixty-four percent viewed Romney favorably, 18 percent unfavorably. For former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, it was 68 percent favorable, 21 percent unfavorable.

Other possible candidates are largely unknown, even among self-identified Republican or GOP-leaning adults. The breakdown:

_Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, 28 percent favorable, 13 percent unfavorable, 59 percent no opinion.

_Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour, 27 percent favorable, 14 percent favorable, 58 percent no opinion.

_Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels, 24 percent favorable, 13 percent unfavorable, 63 percent no opinion.

_South Dakota Sen. John Thune, 20 percent favorable, 10 percent unfavorable and 70 percent no opinion.

The AP-GfK Poll was conducted Nov. 3-8, 2010, by GfK Roper Public Affairs and Corporate Communications. It involved landline and cell phone interviews with 1, 000 adults nationwide. It has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 4.1 percentage points for all surveyed, and 6.4 percentage points for the questions asked only of Republicans.

Well whoever might want to vote for Sarah in the GOP primaries - listening to her scream about "our freedoms" - might want to keep in mind that the Patron Saint of Our Freedoms had protestors removed from her speaking engagement in Philly. They were across the street. (Philadelphia was a big town in the birth of our freedom as I recall. You know when soon to be American people protested fat cats using  Read More...

Reagan, Bush I & II, and Palin. The GOP sure loves its sock-puppet airheads.

Palin's new Alaska program will win her many new fans. She comes across as likable and friendly. Should she run, which is likely, she will win in Iowa, New Hampshire and then, South Carolina. At that point, she will be home free. To win the election, she will need someone with serious experience in foreign affairs on the ticket with her who is also popular and a good campaigner, the way Biden was for Obama. Lamar Alexander might fit the bill. He was a terrific governor of Tennessee, served with distinction as Secretary of Education and has been an effective senator. He would be reassuring, as Palin begins to sound more moderate.

Sure...and maybe brain transplants will have been invented by then. Under the health care reform bill I think she might move to the top of the list based on neediness.

Enough already! This permanent campaign business has got to stop. It costs fortunes and does nothing to solve the country's problems. The system no longer works. It is all about money and celebrity, not leadership and issues. We need a parliamentary system like Britain. The only voting would be for your Congressman. The Senate would be an honorary debating society. Done.

Now is the time to research 2012 candidates and reject those that don't reflect your values. I don't support those that only know leadership as usual - more of the same.

Tim Pawlenty's platform is defeating healthcare and denying government funds to MN to establish his platform vs. interests of his state. Behind the scenes, he took the money. Funny that he wouldn't publicize a feat never achieved in history.

35W bridge collapse, our major infrastructure in Minneapolis, resulted in 13 deaths. In one year, the bridge was completely rebuilt and opened three weeks prior to the RNC convention. Never before has a bridge been designed, approved by agencies, bid process, and built within a year. Karl Rove and George Bush comments to Michele Bachmann coined the phrase "take the pink gloves off." After the RNC, the investigations began and then mysteriously stopped .

A brave GOP state senator revealed last week to the Mpls Star Tribune that, when he asked questions, the GOP party threated to ruin his career if he didn't remain silent.

I like The Huckster, not that I would want him as POTUS. He has a legitimate populist spunk which is not based upon irrational hatred of the opposition.

I agree. He's very likable and articulate and with enough money could get elected. His politics are hard right bordering on theocratic, which makes him scary.

You have to love poll samples, the AP-GfK Poll is based on a nationally representative RDD sample of at least 1,000adults, ages 18 and older, living in the 50 states. The landline RDD sample of households called is stratified, or divided, by census region with targets set for the
number of complete calls per region. Cell numbers are not geographically stratified, other
than in selecting the initial sample.

So based on 1000 people they believe that this is representative of the opinion of All Americans what tripe.

Palin and Huckabee will be the lead contenders. The tee baggers/wingnuts will never accept Romney because he is Mormon and the evangelicals view that religion as a cult. He may as well save his money.

TELL SISTER SARAH TO BRING IT. Even conservative Joe Scarbrough said yesterday, that even at 48% in the polls, there isn't a Republican out there yet that could win against in 2012 including Sister SP.
