Google Fires Employee Who Leaked Memo On Raises

Google Fires Leak

Google has fired the employee who leaked news of its 10 percent across-the-board pay raises, CNN Money reports.

Word is the raise was designed to boost company morale in the wake of some high-profile departures. But the tech giant certainly dampened the mood by terminating a worker for leaking an overwhelmingly-positive memo (appended below).

As Peter Kafka notes, a company with 23,300 employees has little hope of keeping a "confidential" memo sent to every worker a secret, and the memo seems written to encourage spreading a good public-relations move to the general public.

Read the original memo from Google CEO Eric Schmidt, per Business Insider:

CONFIDENTIAL: INTERNAL ONLY
GOOGLERS ONLY (FULL TIME AND PART TIME EMPLOYEES)

I'm pleased to share some very, very good news with Googlers worldwide. But first let me say, on behalf of everyone on the management team, that we believe we have the best employees in the world. Period. The brightest, most capable group of this size ever assembled. It's why I'm excited to come to work every day--and I'm sure you feel the same way. We want to make sure that you feel rewarded for your hard work, and we want to continue to attract the best people to Google.

So that is why we've decided...to give all of you a 10% raise, effective January 1st. This salary increase is global and across the board--everyone gets a raise, no matter their level, to recognize the contribution that each and every one of you makes to Google.

There's more. We've heard from your feedback on Googlegeist and other surveys that salary is more important to you than any other component of pay (i.e., bonus and equity). To address that, we're moving a portion of your bonus into your base salary, so now it's income you can count on, every time you get your paycheck. That's also effective January 1st. You'll be receiving an email shortly with further details about these changes to your compensation. And one last thing...today we're announcing that everyone will get a holiday cash bonus, too.

Googlers, you are what makes this company great, and our goal here is to recognize you for your contribution, in a way that's meaningful to you. Thank you for all that you do, and for making Google a place where magic happens.

Eric

How hard is it to just do your job, and not expose private information.

What about the legality of the termination in light of the recent NLRB ruling?

That ruling has nothing to do with leaking confidential internal memos. It may be bad PR but a company is absolutely within their rights to terminate someone who leaks private information.

Clearly this man is not one of the best and brightest of the Google workforce that Eric Schmidt refers to in his confidential internal memo. If he was, he would know that sending this out to the masses on your work computer is able to be traced? (sigh).

So does this mean he won't be getting the raise?

Someone just got excited. Its good news, with the recession and people getting fired come on google have a little humor. I cant believe you'd fire someone for this. Everyone is going through a rough patch and there was reason to be excited. Way to go for morale boosting.

I am totally against the confidentiality of employees compensation.
The compensation packages of exes of a publicly traded company is public inf anyway.
For example, I like to know that, on average, Goldman Sachs employees made $498,000 in 2009...

Stupid Google! Becoming just another Yahoo - i mean Yoogle or is it goohoo?

Facebook's gonna kick your butt. This is what happens if you hire "professional managers" like Eric Schmidt to run your company. Fall of a great company. Fortunately someone else always rises to take their place.

I can't think of many areas where Google and Facebook are direct competitors. Also, Facebook is basically a website that gets you to part with as much personal information as possible before selling it to whomever will pay what they ask. Google's far from perfect, but your statement doesn't make too much sense...

I would have fired that employee too! The dolt didn't simply post on a personal blog or email a relative/friend that they're all getting raises at Google. He put the memo out!

Manka Bros. offered $1,001 bonus and 10.1% raise to senior management (only) and wasn't ashamed to tell anyone. The Chairman of the company wrote a blog about it.
