Obama In Indonesia Visits Istiqlal Mosque (PHOTOS)

First Posted: 11/10/10 07:45 AM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 07:10 PM ET

President Barack Obama visited Indonesia's largest mosque during his trip to the world's largest majority Muslim nation, reports the AP. The visit to Istiqlal Mosque comes as Obama tries to rebuild ties with the Muslim world, citing "years of mistrust" that have damaged relations, says Reuters. During his speech to the Indonesian people, he said that Indonesia, his boyhood home, is "part of me."

Obama, who criticized Israel yesterday for its decision to build 1,300 new settlement homes in east Jerusalem, also said that the Israeli-Palestinian peace process faces "enormous obstacles," but added:

But let there be no doubt: we will spare no effort in working for the outcome that is just, and that is in the interest of all the parties involved: two states, Israel and Palestine, living side by side in peace and security.

The president related his speech in Indonesia to his previous appeal to the Muslim world from Cairo, saying he realized that "no single speech" can undo "years of mistrust," but that the U.S. would continue its appeals to the Muslim world. In Cairo, however, Reuters is reporting that some Muslims feel that the he has not done enough to heal U.S.-Muslim relations.

Obama used the mosque visit to highlight Indonesia's religious diversity, according to the New York Times. After touring the mosque in stockinged feet, with the First Lady wearing a traditional headscarf, Obama said of religious tolerance, "As a Christian visiting a mosque on this visit, I found it in the words of a leader who was asked about my visit and said: 'Muslims are also allowed in churches. We are all God's followers.'"

Seeing the president's wife wearing a headscarf is pretty damn sad. What would she have to do if visiting a country that practices foot-binding or infibulation? Too bad that she, like her husband, doesn't have a pair either.

It's a sign of respect, or are you unfamiliar with that.

Then why don't Muslim women, especially the ones who are hoping to become American citizens, respect our culture and customs and NOT wear the head scarf or the head-to-toe covering?

Interesting - our reporters, diplomats and now the first lady wear head coverings when in Muslim countries. But the Muslim women who come here as immigrants, wanting to become U.S. citizens, do not want to respect our customs and culture and insist on their "right" to wear head-to-toe covering. I have to laugh when thinking what a bank teller would say if robbed by someone who adopted the Muslim women's attire - "No - didn't see the face, the feet, the body - can't give you any description at all about markings on the body, either." Perfect disguise.

Just thought it was a little thing worth mentioning.

But evidently our freedom of expression and freedom of religion end at another country's borders.

ok the covering thing isnt enforced anywhere accept saudi arabia, iran and afghanistan. These countries make up about 2-4% of Muslims. Indonesia doesnt enforce head covering idiot. She went into a mosque which is why she is putting on a headscarf. She wasnt asked, she just did it by the way. When you go to holyplaces you cant just go in half naked like in church. Different places have different levels of respect. For example in the US it will disrespectful for someone to go in a church with short skirts. 50-60 years ago and even today in many catholic churches people are forced to wear scarfs like Mary.

I cannot see any reason for wearing this unattractive outfit. Of course showing respect by wearing a scarf make sense, and I would expect the First Lady to do this, but I guess it's too much to ask that the scarf and the entire outfit be a bit more feminine if possible, and perhaps properly sized.

I love my president! He has so much class. I admire him for getting along with others. I'm all for better relations with the Muslim world.

And if we have to throw the women under the bus, so be it. It is, after all, a long standing male tradition.
11:48 PM on 11/11/2010
It's not throwing women under the bus, she wore a head scarf when she visited a mosque as respect. If she had covered her hair at the Vatican no one would bother to complain.

Thats not true. She is allowed. Look at the hajj women and men are mixed there. This is a common misconception. Just cause some idiots make their own rules doesnt mean its true.

I deeply respect the President for trying to work to change the country and the world for the better. Even though I don't think he will make a ton of changes...I'm skeptical by nature..I admire him for trying.

So He didn't say anything about Indonesians burning churches and Christian homes?

They don't object because he hasn't visited any synagogues, or at least, I couldn't find any stories about it.
