Coy Sheppard Cut From High School Football Team For Wearing Pink Cleats, Sues School District: Report
Coy Sheppard, a student of Mendenhall High School in Miss., reportedly filed a lawsuit last week against the school district, alleging that he was cut from the football team for wearing pink cleats during October's Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
According to the report, coach Chris Peterson "dressed down" Sheppard, a 17-year-old senior kicker, during a football game on Oct. 8.
When Sheppard showed up to practice the next day, Peterson reportedly kicked him off of the team.
District Deputy Superintendent Tom Duncan said the decision had "nothing to do with lack of support for breast cancer awareness."
However, according to Yahoo's Pep Rally blog, the pink shoes had everything to do with breast cancer awareness because they "were a gift from Sheppard's 82-year-old great grandmother, a breast cancer survivor."
