Father Sues Detroit School District Over 'Racist' Reading About Slavery

Father Sues Over Racist Reading

11/10/10 08:53 PM ET   AP

MOUNT CLEMENS, Mich. — The father of a black student has sued a Detroit-area school district claiming that his daughter was racially harassed by a fifth-grade teacher's reading aloud from a book about slavery.

The suit claims Jala Petree's teacher at Margaret Black Elementary School in Sterling Heights read excerpts from Julius Lester's "From Slave Ship to Freedom Road" that contain racial epithets and racist characterizations, The Macomb Daily reported.

The suit against Warren Consolidated Schools was filed Nov. 3 in Macomb County Circuit Court in Mount Clemens, according to court records. It was filed by Jala's father, Jamey Petree, and seeks more than $50,000 in damages.

District spokesman Bob Freehan told The Associated Press on Wednesday that the district hasn't been served with the suit but plans a vigorous defense. He said the excerpts were read last school year during a unit to prepare students for Black History Month.

The reading was from supplemental material provided by a textbook company, Freehan said, and following the reading students were involved in what he called a "positive" discussion about the excerpts.

The lawsuit claims the reading has "affected the conditions of learning duties and the advantages of her further education, and seriously affected her mental and emotional well-being, past, present and future."

Lawyer Scott E. Combs, who is representing the family, told The Detroit News that letters and calls to the district failed to remedy the family's concerns over the literature and the parents eventually pulled the child from the district.

"I tried long and hard to get answers and an explanation from the school," he said.

Freehan, however, said the school has given the family and its lawyer detailed responses. He said family didn't inquire about the lesson until April, more than three months after the lesson was presented.

I've had to do read-alouds from "Black Boy" before, and I always skip the not school appropriate words!

You stated: " Appreciate that you all are lecturing a black man and his daughter about what they should and should not learn from slavery. They will likely know far more from personal experiences about discrimination, than most of the people here who are snarking on them. You folks that are being condescending know nothing about this man or what occurred, other than the 50 words that you just read."

First, Julius Lester as stated by Swordfis. is the author of the book in question, is distinguished African-American writer. Often polemical, with many children's books. It's one thing to ban hateful words from the classroom; another to ban them from literature that is expressly written to demonstrate their destructiveness. This kind of squeamishness only increases the power of hate-words rather than taking away their sting.

If we do not learn from the mistakes of the past, we are doomed to repeat them in the future.

I commend the Jewish people because they constantly teach their children as well as others about the Holocaust.

If we are to get along and advance as a nation, it is important that we not only learn about history but become well versed in our respective cultures as well as the cultures of others.

History and Cultural Diversity allows us to take pride in ourselves as well as others.

That's exactly why you don't let textbook companies run the classroom, or select the material to be used.
01:10 PM on 11/15/2010
That's a ridiculous argument. Whom do you expect to choose the material? I worked for several textbook companies. Their primary concern is satisfying the educational standards spelled out by the state. And then they have to compete against other companies to make a book that the teacher or the school board like best.

I prefer that teachers make educational decisions in the classroom, rather than have profit-seeking textbook publishers do it for them. If it's ridiculous to suggest that teachers create their own lesson plans, than perhaps that explains the current state of our educational system, which is sinking in world-wide rankings like a lead weight.

Leave it to CNN to advertise on a video of a child being whipped. More disgusting than the video.

But Catcher in The Rye is still banned from many State curricula.

Our history is not very pleasant, and horiffic and hateful things occured. Do we know the context in which the book was read? Do we know what the teacher's lesson plan consisted of to use this book to teach the lesson? Do we know what the explaination was to the class for the type of language used in the book?

I wonder if Mr. Peteree is opposed to his child from watching or reading "Roots?"

I agree. Somethings about our history are painful, but it is still important for future generations to see where we were as a country and how far along we have come along. Not really sure what she read that caused such pain, but I think the suit is frivolous.

I agree we should forget history, lest we'll never be doomed to repeat it.

I wonder what exactly was read? This story would be more complete if we could read the material for ourselves.

Excerpts from Julius Lester's "From Slave Ship to Freedom Road" that contain racial epithets and racist characterizations.

That's what was read. It's highly inappropriate.

If I read books containing epithets and racist characterizations of White people as greedy slavemasters who valued money over morality -- White folks would never tolerate it.

That's totally untrue. What do you mean white folks would never tolerate it? That's ridiculous.

It took them 3 months to figure out how they could sue. Hopefully, the school district won't settle with these opportunists.

A ridiculous lawsuit; I hope the plaintiff and his attorney are ultimately sanctioned.
