On Wednesday's "Countdown," Howard Kurtz told Keith Olbermann that he was wrong to have made the donations that resulted in his two-day suspension from MSNBC.

Kurtz, who is now the Washington bureau chief for the Daily Beast, and the Nation's media writer Greg Mitchell (who also blogs for the Huffington Post) were on the show to debate the ethics of political contributions by members of the news business. Unsurprisingly, the debate focused on Olbermann's three donations to Democratic candidates in late October. Olbermann's failure to ask his superiors for permission to donate -- he said he was unaware that this rule existed -- resulted in his suspension, which ended on Tuesday.

Kurtz told Olbermann that he had overstepped the line separating journalists from partisans.

"I believe you made a serious mistake, Keith, with these Democratic donations, beyond the question of whether you knew about the NBC policy," he said. There has to be some kind of line separating journalists, and I know you consider yourself a journalist, from partisan players."

WATCH:

Olbermann asked Kurtz that, if he felt that journalists personally could not donate, that meant that Olbermann's corporate bosses at General Electric -- or, in the near future, at Comcast -- could not give money to politicians either. Kurtz said that Olbermann was raising a different set of issues there.

"Once you get up to the corporate level, where they're not meddling with newsroom decisions...corporations are going to give money," he said.

Mitchell disagreed with Kurtz, saying that "in the real world, owners of companies have an interest" in the output of their news divisions.

Howie - isn't he the guy who wrote a Washington Post column on how great CNN was? He was also working for CNN at the time.

Keith is a decent guy to let Kurtz tell him he was wrong in front of the camera...who of us would do that??? Apparently it's only cool to donate to republicans on MSNBC, not democrats.

Are you kidding? Olbermann didn't know there was a rule against it?? BWAAAHAAAAHAAAA Amazing that he could say that with a straight face, and even more amazing people will believe him. Come on folks, i don't have to tell you that ignorance of the law is no excuse, but the man is the #1 show on the network, he certainly has the ear of those that could tell him there's a company policy against it.

Keith has been with NBC since 1997 and he didn't know about a policy DIRECTLY related to the type of show he has? I am calling a giant B and a S to that statement. Especially since he operates in the realm of political commentary, he can't possibly claim to be in the dark about a company policy that pertains to his line of work. That's not the type of thing NBC would forget to make him aware of.

Shut up Kurtz. It's over.

Kurtz ever mentioned this opinions and positions in regard to right wing media personnel?

If not then it makes his opinion hypocritical, fact-less and nothing more than you find from any right wing hack.

This is an example of what kind of person Mr. Olberman really is. His insecurities are evident by how much time he spends bashing Glen Beck and FOX. His handlers should teach him how to report the news and maybe his ratings will not be as low as they are. He could take some lessons from the FOX team on being part of a team.

Your first sentence is right but the rest of your comment... not so much.  Mr. Olbermann allowed Mr Kurtz to question and condemn his behavior without seeking to shout him down or belittle him after the segment ended.  If the commentators on FOX behaved in this manner they would have a great deal more credibility.

Remember the ratings of the FOX shows has more to do with dominance of the market as a result of Mr. Murdock's anti-competitive practices than anything else.

Keith is a partisan commentator... not a journalist... journalists have to report the news without picking sides... neither Keith nor the hacks over at fox news does that hence neither can claim the term journalist.

I like how Keith kept his composure through the interview. If it were me, half of my responses would've been bleeped out!!

Perhaps Keith is an adult who understands that, essentially, he did err in donating to political candidates.

Which he did.
04:49 AM on 11/13/2010
Donating to political candidates is allowed by NBC, however, Griffin wants to choose which candidates can or cannot receive donations.  He had no problem with Scarborough's donation to a republican candidate.

Only real journalist need be concerned with conflict of interest here….Keith makes no pretense to be impartial....MSNBC mistakenly believed they had moral high ground here.

Keith is a fabulous and wonderful journalist.....and one thing he can do, which I admire is: apologize....to actually say the words- 'I'm sorry.'......is an act of courage.

Watch Kurtz carefully.

He's nothing but an Establishment suck up disguised in a bunch of irrelevant verbiage.
