Alaska Senate Race Ballot Madness: The STRANGEST Write-In Votes (PHOTOS)

First Posted: 11/12/10 12:15 PM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 07:10 PM ET

Votes are still being counted in Alaska, where GOP nominee Joe Miller is clinging to thin hopes that he will be able to get enough write-in votes disqualified so that he can make good on all of that premature drape-measuring and apartment-hunting he was bragging about doing prior to Election Day. Workers continue to comb through the write-ins, and what they're encountering runs the gamut of the write-in experience: close misspellings, unexpected names, joke votes...plus a healthy number of ballots that the Miller campaign is challenging for no discernible reason.

Only two people have ever won a write-in campaign to the U.S. Senate: South Carolina's Strom Thurmond in 1954, and California's William Knowland in 1946 -- who ran in an all-write-in special election for a two-month term. So something historic may be brewing up in The Last Frontier, but behind that backdrop, the ballot counters doing the nuts-and-bolts work are encountering their fair share of high weirdness. We've rounded up some of the behind-the-scenes highlights to commemorate this time in our lives.

we have to appreciate the Native Alaskan (Inuit) PAC, in their effort to inform their non-English speaking voters with native language pamphlet as in pic #16

To avoid arguments over spelling, someone suggested reverting to the age-old method of just inserting an X. Then someone else realised, that this could result in a landslide victory for someone called Malcolm.

This is the same ploy used by any politician who wants to keep his name in the lights. He is down by over 10,000 votes. He cannot win. He can 'refudiate' 8,000 votes and still lose.

Meanwhile the Angles of AZ running for Congress, the O'Donnells of DE thinking of running as Senator for a 3rd time, and Sarah Palin is still a joke on TV demonstrating her skills as a male impersonator of 'Teddy' playing wackamolee with fish while her daughter states to lose the prom queen look and Barbara Bush states stay in Alaska.

And applause to Barbara Bush for being the only GOPer with the guts to say what the rest of the GOP is thinking.

Angle is of Nevada, not Arizona. Don't make us worse than we already are. :)

Mr. Miller,
Get over yourself and find a good psychiatrist. Enough is enough.

Ah, let him pursue every avenue. It's his right. It will only solidify Merkuwskies win.

The reason those last votes were challenged isn't because they believe that any reasonable person would reject them--it's because they want to give out the largest number possible when they speak of dubious votes in order to cast doubt upon the voters as to the legitimacy of her win. It's a phreakin' game and it makes me sick.

Sell Alaska back to the Russians. Heck, just give it away. This state has cost us more in financial aid than any other and still does and still will. It has spawned possibly the greatest threat to our nation in Sarah Palin. This beggar state has taken upon itself to dictate to the rest of the nation its flawed logic and morals.

Please don't think that Palin or Joe (Loser) Miller represent Alaska. They are a serious embarrassment to most of us and we'd be happy to be rid of both of them...but not at the cost of them being in any type of elected office. There are plenty of us who don't like the pork approach to funding and would be happy to see it decrease substantially. Do remember however, we are providing a fair amount of black gold. And fuel oil and gasoline cost more here (Fairbanks area) than they do Outside - something that remains puzzling considering we sit on the Alaska Pipeline and have a local refinery.

Please somehow forgive us for these two! Miller is just a carpetbagger up here - he is NOT an Alaskan and hopefully will go away after he finally wastes all the donated money he is living on while pursuing his right to appeal. Perhaps we could say that his 'Bridge To Nowhere' is thoroughly burned.

Nether of these candidates will be good for the state of Alaska or the country.
This is a lose-lose situation.

Can someone tell Joe Miller to shave - or not?...but this simulated 5 o'clock shadow is bugging me.

Given the choices most people were faced with, Donald Duck isn't a bad option. I would prefer a binding "none of the above". If neither candidate could pull a majority, than you go back to the drawing board.

I would only vote for Donald if he agreed to hire his uncle Scrooge McDuck to be his economic adviser, that guy knows how to handle money responsibly.

She won. Do you understand the word MAJORITY?

She almost lost due to a barrage of corpo propaganda, which in itself is unfair and is a threat to our democracy.

I feel for the people who voted 'none of the above', etc.  They made the trip to the election booth to show they took their responsibilities as citizens seriously but thought none of the candidates was worthy of a vote.  I feel that way sometimes myself.

We need better candidates - in ALL parties.
