Rep. Eric Cantor Tells Israel's Benjamin Netanyahu: New GOP Majority Will 'Serve As A Check On The Administration'

First Posted: 11/12/10 02:01 PM ET Updated: 05/25/11 07:10 PM ET

NEW YORK -- Rep. Eric Cantor (R-Va.) told Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday during a meeting in New York that the new GOP majority in the House will "serve as a check" on the Obama administration, a statement unusual for its blunt disagreement with U.S. policy delivered directly to a foreign leader.

"Eric stressed that the new Republican majority will serve as a check on the Administration and what has been, up until this point, one party rule in Washington," read a statement from Cantor's office on the one-on-one meeting. "He made clear that the Republican majority understands the special relationship between Israel and the United States, and that the security of each nation is reliant upon the other."

Cantor also took issue with Obama administration policies in other areas, including Iran, with the statement from his office saying the congressman "believes that it is time for the administration to fully and aggressively implement the Iran Sanctions Act passed by Congress earlier this year."

Ron Kampeas from the Jewish Telegraphic Agency news agency found Cantor's comments extremely surprising, writing, "I can't remember an opposition leader telling a foreign leader, in a personal meeting, that he would side, as a policy, with that leader against the president. Certainly, in statements on one specific issue or another -- building in Jerusalem, or somesuch -- lawmakers have taken the sides of other nations. But to have-a-face to face and say, in general, we will take your side against the White House -- that sounds to me extraordinary."

Cantor spokesman Brad Dayspring took issue with Kampeas' claim, writing, "The claim you make below simply isn't in there [the statement]." Kampeas also noted that the meeting itself was unusual, since foreign leaders normally meet with congressional leaders in groups. Netanyahu did, however, meet with Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) separately, but the senator didn't put out an "explicitly political statement" afterward.

In the past, Republicans have been sharply critical of Democratic trips abroad that could be seen as undermining the official foreign policies of the U.S. president. For example, in 2007, both the Bush White House and its Republican supporters lashed out at House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Cali.) for visiting Syria, saying that she was trying to circumvent President Bush (never mind that Republican lawmakers were also in Syria and Pelosi didn't criticize the Bush administration).

"It has long been the established principle of this country that the president of the United States leads our foreign policy," said former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney. "And if you don't like the president, then you change him. But you don't have the two parties each conducting foreign policy in the way they think it ought to be conducted."

John Bolton, the former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, added, "I would simply hope that people would understand that, under the Constitution, the president conducts foreign policy, not the speaker of the House."

In 2006, conservatives went after former vice president Al Gore for criticizing "abuses" committed by the U.S. government against Arabs post-9/11 in a speech in Saudi Arabia, with the editorial page of Investor's Business Daily saying he demonstrated "supreme disloyalty to his country."

But in fact, in 1996, Rep. Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.) also tried to signal to a foreign country that it might have better luck working with Congress instead of the president, traveling to Colombia and telling military officials there to "bypass the U.S. executive branch and communicate directly with Congress."

UPDATE, 2:47 p.m.: State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley responded to Cantor's comments in an statement to The Huffington Post: "Our pursuit of Middle East peace is rooted in the national interest and not in partisan politics. Presidents of both parties have been directly engaged in negotiations over decades and the Congress with majorities from both parties have long supported these efforts. President Obama and Secretary Clinton are determined to help the parties resume direct negotiations that produce a two-state solution. We are confident that the vast majority of members of Congress from both parties support what we are doing."

UPDATE, 4:41 p.m.: In 2007 National Review op-ed, Cantor wrote, "Presenting Assad with 'a new Democratic alternative' -- code for making President Bush look feckless -- Mrs. Pelosi usurped the executive branch's time-honored foreign-policy authority. Her message to Assad was that congressional Democrats will forbid the president from increasing pressure on Damascus to stop its murderous way. Several leading legal authorities have made the case that her recent diplomatic overtures ran afoul of the Logan Act, which makes it a felony for any American 'without authority of the United States' to communicate with a foreign government to influence that government's behavior on any disputes with the United States."

So much for investigative reporting and journalism. Whenever I want a more well-rounded picture in terms of what is going on with our government, I often have to tune in to (a) the BBC, (b) Russian satellite -- was surprised on THATone and (c) the Latin American press.

I don't fully trust any media outlet but I figure somewhere in there lies the truth and we certainly don't get a full picture of it here. When Americans chant "USA! USA" I often wonder how many people would be frightened and appalled to know what their s/elected government officials do in their name. Most people don't have a clue what our representatives are doing here or abroad.

The double standard is breathtaking, isn't it? These people have no sense of irony, and certainly no class whatsoever. Unblelievable hubris from these yokels.

Imagine if a Democrat had said something like this to a foreign leader about Bush. This is crazy--Cantor needs to resign and move to Is*rael (that's the population he serves).

Cantor has behaved despicably. This is exactly what many here have been trying to say. The loyalty to Israel, right or wrong is unbelievable. I agree with many here, that if Cantor, or any other "Israel over the US" supporter wants to act disloyal to a US leader, in the most deplorable manner, pack up and leave for that rogue nation. This is proof that the Jewish Lobby has been so successful in brainwashing our leaders into feeling they need to support Israel, even when it acts like a rogue nation. Where is the outrage? I hear silence.

If Eric Cantor is so concern over what Israel feels maybe he should give up his US citizenship and move to Israel.. We don't need US politician lobbying for a foreign country, we have enough problems of our own..

Eric Cantor give up US citizenship??? Not until Moses part the Misisippi River . It is difficult to cut link with your motherland. Not for Jews or any other races. But your loyalty to your host country is paramount. Soros, Larry King and many others are the true American

TO Eric Cantor, and friends,

In 1934 my grandfather was an American Counsel General in Germany. He continually wrote letters to the State Department to say the even though the US firmly supported the Nazi government that all was not well - that there were de-humanizing, injustice activities being being performed against the Jews that were not JUST, by any extention of human relations. Yes, these activities were being fully supported by the United States at that time. The injustices were not seen by the powers that be in the US government - until the beginning of the Second World War.
What are your own personal thoughts? BUT, PLEASE thoroughly check the facts before you reply.

A pro-Israel believer, in steadfast hope,

Bob

With all due respect sir, what do the trials and tribulations of WW2 Germany have to do with Eric Cantor's seditious behavior to the USA in 2010?

Answer is it way over represents the number of Zionists in the country. I think many members who support Israel know better but are afraid to stand up to the pro-Israeli lobby for fear of their careers being destroyed.

The "majority of Americans support Israel" but only because of the propaganda of the US MSM and the fact that they don't report the truth and facts about Israel. They conveniently omit anything that is even marginally negative about either Israel or their shills, and they downplay the true cost of Israel to Americans. For example this very discussion about Eric Cantor and his attempt to stick Americans with billions of aid to Israel by shifting it to defense was not mentioned anywhere in the major media except by Salon and Huffington.

Americans should be very concerned about this ongoing cover-up of actions and facts involving Israel by our media. If it involved any other country it would be thoroughly vetted. If it involved a person of notoriety that said something critical about Israel (i.e. Helen Thomas) the media pounces like a pack of rats on prey. Their agenda is obvious and the media cover-up is not only concerning it is extremely dangerous to our democracy. It means there is little public accountability for Israel's shills in the USA.

If the American population knew the true and not what the American media feed them, then majority of Americans will change their mind. Many of the Western Europe nations used to blindly follow Is*rael but that has change. With the Middle Class falling in America, how long do you think America will want to continue to support Is*rael?

What's good for the goose is good for the gander. Various U.S. administrations have publicly worked with the Israeli opposition against their government many times in the past, and attempted to under the current government. However, this time around the Israeli opposition is too weak to undermine the government. If what Cantor did is illegal, someone should charge him in a court of law.

Cantor isn't part of the administration. Please give specifics of how "Various U.S. administrations have publicly worked with the Israeli opposition against their government....and attempted to under the current government".

And yes, Cantor should be charged with a crime.

"The report reveals that Dogan, the 19-year-old US citizen of Turkish descent, was filming with a small video camera on the top deck of the Mavi Marmara when he was shot twice in the head, once in the back and in the left leg and foot and that he was shot in the face at point blank range while lying on the ground.

The report says Dogan had apparently been "lying on the deck in a conscious or semi-conscious, state for some time" before being shot in his face."

"...Although the report's revelations and conclusions about the killing of Dogan and the five other victims were widely reported in the Turkish media last week, not a single story on the report has appeared in US news media.

The administration has made it clear through its inaction and its explicit public posture that it has no intention of pressing the issue of the murder of a US citizen in cold blood by Israeli commandos."

"...The fact-finding mission was given forensic evidence that, after the initial shot in chest from above, Bilgen was shot in the head with a "soft baton round at such close proximity that an entire bean bag and its wadding penetrated the skull and lodged in the chest from above," the mission concluded."

negative stories about israel have a way of never appearing, being spun through the neocon spin cycle, or disappearing in the blink of an eye.

that's what happens when the US media is necon owned and controlled.

Neocons Talk Deficit but Won’t Budge on Defense Cuts

"China spends half the share of its GDP on defense as the U.S. — less than $100 billion last year... That’s less than 15 percent of what we spent.

According to SIPRI, the military budgets of EVERY NATION other than the U.S

added together would only come to 46 percent of the total.

In other words, the U.S. defense budget is 54 percent of world military spending.

The idea that we need a defense budget almost 60 percent larger as a share of GDP than a decade ago is ludicrous.

...that isn’t enough to justify spending more than half of the world’s military expenditures.

Almost all our NATO allies get by spending well less than half what we spend as a share of GDP."

Irving Kristol, FOUNDER of the neocon movements, father of leading neocon Faux News blowhard Bill Kristol, was honest: "it is now an interest of the Jews to have a large and powerful military establishment in the United States... American Jews who care about the survival of the state of Israel have to say, no, we don't want to cut the military budget, it is important to keep that military budget big, so that we can defend Israel."

"HAIFA, Israel — The parents of an American protester crushed to death by an Israeli military bulldozer in the Gaza Strip got their first chance Thursday to hear from the man who drove the vehicle that killed her.

But they were denied a chance to confront him face-to-face in an Israeli courtroom, dashing a central goal of their civil lawsuit against Israel's Defense Ministry. The unidentified former soldier was shielded behind a wood-and-plastic partition, and his testimony about the events leading up to 23-year-old Rachel Corrie's death floated into the hall over a microphone."

"...I haven't heard one moment of remorse, and to me, that's one of the saddest things," Cindy Corrie said during a break in the proceedings.

...They have also tried unsuccessfully to sue Caterpillar Inc., the U.S. company that manufactured the bulldozer. They claimed the company was liable for aiding and abetting human rights violations.

Rachel, the youngest of the couple's three children, took a break from college at age 23 to pursue student activism overseas as a member of the International Solidarity Movement, a pro-Palestinian group whose activists often position themselves in hotspots between Palestinians and Israeli soldiers.

Her fellow activists claim she was killed deliberately and see her as a symbol of what they consider to be Israeli brutality."

"The fury of the "pro-Israel" lobby lately has truly been something to behold.

It has abandoned bipartisanship by setting up front organizations like the so-called Emergency Committee for Israel, which is running ads across the country calling on voters to defeat Democratic members of the House and Senate for signing a letter urging President Obama to address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

With all the problems average Americans are facing, the lobby is so out-of-touch that it thinks that hard-hit Pennsylvanian voters (the ads runs most often in the Keystone State) will actually cast their votes based on the lobby's litmus test of who is and who isn't hawkish enough on Israel.

Then there is the American Jewish Committee, which has now issued an unusual second political poll this year. The first, issued in March, was its traditional annual poll of American Jewish opinion on matters foreign and domestic.

This second poll, issued just before the congressional elections, is more limited and clearly is designed to demonstrate that Jewish voters are deserting President Obama because of his efforts to bring Israelis and Palestinians to the peace table. (The AJC press release carries the title: "AJC Poll Shows Jewish Disapproval of President Obama Rising.")

Actually, the poll's intent is to create the shift it claims to portray"
