Pirates, sea battles, treasure chests, secret tunnels, old maps...any mention of the word "treasure" is bound to set our imaginations on fire. And though it often seems unbelievable or just plain stupid, human beings have continually been lured by the prospects of hidden treasure.

Here's an exciting selection of 12 famous real-life lost treasures - "real" in the sense that countless people have gone out in search of them (with limited or no success!). While some of these lost treasures may be products of rumor, others, like the Bourbon Treasure or the Nazi Loot indeed have historical backing.

But we'll leave that to you to decide. Happy hunting!

There is substantial evidence that The Amber Room is completely destroyed. Alas.

In college I lived in an old mansion that had become a speakeasy in prohibition and John Dillenger had stayed at the house. It was reported that someone living at the mansion had embezzled $30,000 dollars and the money was never recovered. Looking for that money was everyones past time, I had the fireplace almost torn apart at one point.(I did put it back together before I left).

How about the Rheingold aka the Niebelung Treasure? Ideas, anyone?

Perhaps, Wagner held it in his hands and lost it all. He was known for spending big.

They still keep looking for the Nibelungen Hoard in the Rhein, so far without success. I guess Alberich hid it well.

I've got one for everyone. I used to work with a 65 year old Mexican man about 10 years ago. Him and I got pretty close, and he told me a story. Supposedly, his grandfather rode with Poncho Villa during his adventures North of the Mexican border. There were train robberies and bank robberies to the tune of millions. At the height of the gold rush, a lot of gold was coming out of the El Dorado mountains

According to my friend, most of this stolen gold was buried in a cave in the Black Canyon of Arizona, prior to the construction of Hoover Dam. Of course, this is all covered by Lake Mead now. My friends grandfather told him, this treasure was buried in a particular location. I know the general area, but it is impossible to get to. I believe this is a treasure that will never be found.

Dang. I'm too far up north. I'd gladly help... for a share :). Seriously, this guy Joseph Duran claims to have found it by using the Adams/Onis Treaty of 1819 as a decoder. Check it out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eZDPxF-sFZA

In Germany they talked about the Mondsee, which is in Bavaria I think. But Mondsee is very, very deep and dark.

My uncle was one of those soldiers at the salt mine where the Germans hid all the stolen treasure...no we didn't find any of the lost art when he died.

Yeah, we're still looking for the bodies of three treasure hunters at the Superstition Mountains, from this summer.

The Dutchman has inspired a lot of very ignorant people to wander off into that forbidding landscape and never be seen again.

There's supposed to be a buried treasure somewhere in the Virginia county in which I live. Silly people used to spend all their spare time digging up the yard. So far - no luck. And my back hurts.

Do you live in Clarke or Loudon County? If so, I am assuming you are talking about Mosby's treasure?

We have satellites that can see into the ground and locate secret underground military installations. We also have satellites that can see all but the deepest ocean floors.

I'm guessing that as much as some of these "treasures" may be worth, the entire earth has been thoroughly scanned inch by inch for anything made of valuable materials.

Whatever was lost out there was probably found and taken to Fort Knox many years ago.
