Amazing Design-Friendly Subway Seats (PHOTOS)

First Posted: 11/15/10 04:35 PM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 07:10 PM ET

You already know that we have an odd affinity for subway stations. And, having spent our entire lives in a city, we know that waiting for the subway is half the trip.

That got us thinking: Though we never really sit in the seats while waiting for the New York City subway, that may be because they aren't the most welcoming of seats.

So here, without further ado, are 13 subway stations that have minimalistic and design-friendly seats.

Think we missed one? Send us your photos!

The ones in Moscow and St. Petersburg are also pretty minimalist.

I don't believe these are actual subway stations. Shouldn't there be waist high urine stains on the walls like the NYC stations?

How is Madrid's seating more comfortable than New York City?

They're not covered in dry urine.

I have my doubts that you actually live in NYC. I use the subways all the time and it does not fit the popular national stereotype. (not since the 1980s anyway)

Most of these seats are designed to deter the homeless from sleeping on them. Except for those shown for London and Montreal (and a third city).

The two slides of Montreal are definitely not the best. Metro Laurier has the coolest seating.

So what do you need? Besides a miracle.

They should be comfortable, not "design-friendly."

From the angle I though that #4 was some sort of toilet without stall walls.

a bench is much more economical than an individual seat because multiple people can sit on one bench but not an individual seat they can sit in a row of individual seats but that is still not as efficient as the simple wooden bench sometimes to advance we must look at what worked in the past and build from there and if it is efficient then why fix a broken bench?
05:42 PM on 11/15/2010
Just because more people can sit on a bench doesn't necessarily make it more economical. In addition, there are other reasons why a simple wooden bench might not be ideal: aesthetics and durability come to mind.

I'm an engineering student aesthetics desn't come into my mind just function

Those horizontal, wood, plank-like things are soooooo innovative!
05:20 PM on 11/15/2010
This article is about "minimalistic and design-friendly seats," not innovation.

If that madrid oval wing shaped seat is as uncomfortable as the oval wing shaped seats at Ontario CA's airport that design is an epic fail.

Function before form.

Madrid is just a wood bench i don't see the oval wing shape in it
05:39 PM on 11/15/2010
Hmm that's london isn't it. Madrid looks like an aluminum slight oval on my screen.

Function and form.

“If you want a golden rule that will fit everything, this is it: Have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful.â€
-William Morris

I like this rule for any type of structure. Too bad there is so little of it in the world.
04:32 PM on 11/16/2010
That works for me but if it's not functional it's junk.
