Carey Mulligan

The Guardian:

uhrmann told Deadline: "There are a few elements that I feel need to be resolved before I would categorically state that this is my next film. Regarding the role of Daisy Buchanan, I was privileged to explore the character with some of the world's most talented actresses, each one bringing their own particular interpretation, all of which were legitimate and exciting. However, specific to this particular production of The Great Gatsby, I was thrilled to pick up the phone an hour ago to the young Oscar-nominated British actress Carey Mulligan and say to her: 'Hello, Daisy Buchanan.'"

Why is everybody all frowny faced about another remake? Lighten up. It’s a story.
Let a proven filmmaker get the money and talent to make a run at it and I’ll buy a ticket.

Redford wasn’t right, I’m not sure Leo is either. Needs a lot of internal stuff expressed non-verbally, maybe Colin Firth with an American accent again. Or an actor we don’t know yet, a la’ John Hamm as Don Draper.

DiCaprio will probably make a better Gatsby than Redford did, but ... I dunno, Gatsby is the outsider who, no matter what, can never be an insider. I don't get that vibe from DiCaprio; and I certainly don't get it from Redford.

So many people here have said it, but I can't help echoing why make another remake of this story? It doesn't work as film. Actually none of F. Scott's stories made satisfying movies. Gatsby is intimate on paper but blousy and overblown on the screen.

Gatsby again?? Why must we remake everything on infinitum? Is Hollywood really so devoid of ideas and creativity that every movie now has to be a remake or an adaptation of an old show?

Nevermind, I think I know the answer :(

Robert Redford, Mia Farrow and Sam Waterston were perfect in Coppola's version, but I admit I'm excited about this new effort!

If anyone can do it, she can. She's the best film actress of her age group, full stop.

If they keep cranking out remakes, I'm sure they'll get it right eventually...

Nothing to see here.

No, I'm afraid they won't. Too much of Gatsby is internal. There's way too much introspection for the book to translate well to film. Unless you just use the basic plot as a frame. Of course, that's not really filming the novel but it wouldn't be first time that happened.

I was being sarcastic--I don't believe there's any way to reproduce Fitzgerald's magic on film, either. In fact, as far as cinematic adaptations are concerned, I think Fitzgerald is the most misunderstood popular author this side of H.P. Lovecraft. Hollywood thinks it can capture the atmosphere of "Gatsby" with elaborate sets and costumes and good-looking actors, but the book wasn't about any of that.

why do people keep adapting this book into films? haven't we suffered enough? images and clips from the redford version gave me a very negative impression of the novel, so much so that i avoided reading it for quite some time. i did eventually read it and enjoyed it greatly.

This is a movie. Not a book. Because of this, why is it in the book section?

She's very talented and has the delicacy and devil may care attitude for Daisy. I'm really looking forward to this!

Carey Mulligan is an excellent choice as Daisy. She a talented and subtle actress. I love Gatsby. I've read it both silently and aloud to a spouse. The Robert Redford version followed the book page by page and got the look right but it lacked something indefinable. I hope this version nails it.

The Redford version was terrible. If they're going to make a Fitzgerald film, they're better off doing a film adapted from Nancy Mitford's bio of his wife, "Zelda". That' a book just screaming to made into a film.
