Olympia Snowe Begins Her (Non) Critical Deliberations On The Bush Tax Cuts

First Posted: 11/16/10 02:14 PM ET Updated: 05/25/11 07:15 PM ET

Snowe

Everybody pretty much knows what's going on with the Bush tax cuts, and have since before the election, when the Democrats punted on doing something decisive about it because they were convinced they'd already set the matter up as a "winning issue" for the midterm elections. As you know, that worked out like gangbusters for them! So, now, facing the issue in the lame duck session, the GOP wants to extend all the Bush era tax cuts "permanently," while the Democrats hope that the GOP will "compromise" on "decoupling" the tax cuts for the middle class from the tax cuts on upper income earners. But the GOP won't compromise on that, and so the Democrats will probably end up caving.

Of course, as we are somewhere in the middle of the fourth act of this tragedy, we look to Maine, where typically, one of the state's two Senators pop up to inject themselves into the storyline, momentarily transfixing everyone, only to eventually fade away again. Cue the entrance, stage right!

In response to questions from TPM, Sen. Olympia Snowe (R-ME) said she hasn't reached any conclusions about whether she might support such a compromise, but did acknowledge that she has no objection to the idea of a permanent tax cut for middle-class Americans.

"I don't know. I'm not prepared to say that at this point, frankly. I'd like to see all the tax rates extended for the time being, the next two or three years at the minimum probably, given where we are today," Snowe said.

Pressed, though, Snowe acknowledged that she has no objection to extending some of the tax cuts permanently.

"I don't have any objections obviously," she admitted. "I'd like to consider the totality... I don't want to comment on something I haven't seen."

Exciting times, as Olympia Snowe finally gets around to "consider the totality" of the matter at hand, which everyone else has been considering for many, many months. But this is the way your Senate works, with Snowe or her colleague Susan Collins showing up late in the game to strut and fret across the stage before evenutally signifying nothing. This is how it worked with "Don't Ask Don't Tell," this is how it worked with health care reform, this is how it works when the uniqueness of your "centrist" position allows you to do what you love doing: cut vital deals and craft shrewd policy steal an inordinate amount of the media spotlight for yourself.

"More than anything else it's critical that an accord is reached on this issue. It's timely, it's urgent, it's imperative for the economy," Snowe said.

Oh well thanks, genius. Please take your time, we'll wait.

I would love to hear Nancy Pelosi publicly call out the two Senators from Maine on their reprehensible vote against equal pay for women. She won't publicly but I'm sure Nancy has a little disdain for the two after today.

So, how will members of Congress personally benefit from extension of the Bush Tax Cuts? Follow the money and tell us who and how much will the members gain. Yes, all member Reps & Dems alike. I am tired of being ruled by the Hypocrite Political Party (members from either side of the isle who vote in their interest, not the interest of the Country.) I have written to a lot of news and commenter types to see who will be first to get out the true story. Keep watching!

Given Pelosi's, Reid's, and Obama's skills at passing legislation, I wouldn't be surprised if they manage to pass permanent tax cuts for the top brackets and nothing for anyone else.

I have no respect for Snow or Collins. These women are such plan jane women, they will do anything the republican men tells they to do. Just look at these two women , you can see they are use to being dominated
by men. They both look like they live in a commune where the husbands have 20 wives and they take orders from the men in the camp.

I think I just saw that Collins voted against Women getting paid the same as Men well what else can you expect from a Woman from the "Women walk Two-Steps Behind and Eyes Downcast" Republican Tea Party.

"US defense firms are to be barred from lucrative government contracts if they refuse to allow employees access to the courts, after a woman working for a Halliburton subsidiary in Iraq was prevented from taking legal action over an alleged gang rape by fellow workers.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2009/oct/15/defence-contractors-rape-claim-block

Among the objections were claims that the government had no business interfering in a private contract between a company and its workers.

Offering Ms. Jones legal relief was Senator Al Franken of Minnesota who offered an amendment to the 2010 Defense Appropriations bill that would withhold defense contracts from companies like KBR "if they restrict their employees from taking workplace sexual assault, battery and discrimination cases to court."

Here are those who voted to deny the amendment and protect a corporation over a victim of rape:

Alexander (R-TN)
Barrasso (R-WY)
Bond (R-MO)
Brownback (R-KS)
Bunning (R-KY)
Burr (R-NC)
Chambliss (R-GA)
Coburn (R-OK)
Cochran (R-MS)
Corker (R-TN)
Cornyn (R-TX)
Crapo (R-ID)
DeMint (R-SC)
Ensign (R-NV)
Enzi (R-WY)
Graham (R-SC)
Gregg (R-NH)
Inhofe (R-OK)
Isakson (R-GA)
Johanns (R-NE)
Kyl (R-AZ)
McCain (R-AZ)
McConnell (R-KY)
Risch (R-ID)
Roberts (R-KS)
Sessions (R-AL)
Shelby (R-AL)
Thune (R-SD)
Vitter (R-LA)
Wicker (R-MS)

Snow and Collins voted for the Franken amendment.

Rachel Maddow showed her true intelligence last night and why she is the absolute best at analyzing events and provided discernible news of value.

She went through a number of Republican statements on our debt and then exampled how these same congressional politicians were in fact proposing specific legislation to add to the debt, which was in direct contradiction of what they were claiming to be: deficit hawks.

Her memorable point was that we should not look/listen to what the politicians are saying but what in fact they're doing, i.e. what bills they're advocating or supporting. She also said that THIS GAP represents the true useful "news".

Unfortunately, MSM focuses only on what politicians are saying, particularly Republicans during this focused paranoia on the debt/deficit.

Wait a minute. All these stories seem to be posturing the 60 vote requirement for a new and limited tax break bill to replace the one that expired 12/31/10. Why??????????????????

Bush's 10-year tax cuts were passed through a budget reconciliation vote. 51 votes is all that's required. What's all this posturing? Get it done. Can't Obama/Reid arm twist 51 Democrats, including some of those who lost???

technically he could, but it would be unprecedented (which doesn't mean it couldn't be done)...the problem arises that the rules for reconciliation were never given with the Obama budget FY2011, because the budget was not submitted...(it is 2 months overdue)....

however, some believe that the rules of reconciliation can still apply:

I remember when she cast the deciding vote for this country to continue manufactioning "nerve gas" back in Ronnie Ray-guns day. She's a real peice of work. Not even a real "Mainer"...just another "strap-hanger" from New York who really thinks that anybody born and raised in Maine is a "hick" that can't tie their own shoelaces! She and Collins will both be voted out of office next time.

She'll get hers next election. The teabaggers have already painted a target on her and they been pretty successful in drumming out those who fail their "purity" screen.

Yeah - so they get voted out. They'll all going to get a pension for their lifetime that the middle class can only dream of.

doubtful, a purity test doesn't track well in Maine; for example, Collins and Snowe are two staunchly pro-choice Republicans, it would be difficult to find a Tea Party candidate willing to step outside their own "purity" on the issue to win over a pro-choice Maine electorate...

Snowe is a conservative Republican hack. HP contributors needs to stop misinforming people of her "moderate" stands on anything. She needs to be defeated.

She's just playing politics, doesn't want to come out and say what she really feels until a vote is taken. We all know where she stands, she sold her soul to the devil and will do anything to make sure her masters get their tax cuts.

I agree, but then who's fault is it that she is allowed to continue to screw over the people who elected her? Even during my period where I didn't pay attention to politics, I still found a way to vote for people who seemed to be for the people. I considered myself an independant, yet now that I look back on things, I find that I have never once voted for a republican. Even when I just didn't take the time to really look into what each party stood for, I did the right thing.
