Stewart RIPS John & Cindy McCain's Ever-Evolving Stances On DADT (VIDEO)

Last night on "The Daily Show," Jon Stewart expressed his frustration with John McCain, and recently Cindy McCain, for indefensible flip-flopping over the repeal of Don't Ask Don't Tell (DADT). Cindy McCain, who recently appeared in a PSA speaking out against DADT, reversed her position in a matter of days. But, as Stewart points out, this type of wishy-washy behavior is not new when it comes to her husband John McCain.

First, Stewart showed a clip of McCain in 2006 saying he would consider a repeal when the U.S. military leadership expresses interest. But last spring when military leaders Robert Gates and Adm. Mike Mullen did exactly that, McCain said they also needed to do a year-long study on the effects of a repeal on the troops. Stewart understood exactly:

"It's the 'maverick' way. Spend a year studying whether or not soldiers deserve full civil rights, and a half-an-hour deciding who will be your presidential running mate."

Even when the study was completed and revealed that more than 70% of people in the military are OK with ending the policy, McCain wavered yet again. Stewart got visibly upset when he showed clips of McCain citing everything from needed a slew of hearings to the fact that the wrong kind of study was done, to stall his consideration of a repeal.

This obviously made Stewart upset, but the important thing is that by evaluating Cindy and John McCain's ever-evolving opinions on DADT, Stewart finally understood why they have so many houses:

"They need them to keep all their different beliefs in," he said.

For more, Stewart turned to a PSA made by his "Daily Show" correspondents for John McCain, assuring him that as long as he doesn't consider a repeal of DADT, "it gets worse."

Yet another reason why I haven't watched network news in 10+ years but watch the Daily Show on a regular basis.

LOVE LOVE LOVE the "It Gets Worse" spoof. And the sad thing is that it's so true. I think in 30 years, anyone who was on this anti-gay rights movement is going to look ridiculous and bad, and John McCain will be at the top of that list. Even Obama will look out of touch and backward, if he continues to tippy-toe around these civil rights issues.

I'm with Jon Stewart in his frustration about McCain making this such an issue. LGBT rights and repeal of DADT comprise one of the main civil rights struggles of the 2000’s. Years from now, we will look back on this chapter of history with shame and disgust at our own absurd intolerance the same way the movement supporting civil rights for African-American citizens during the 1960’s is remembered today. Senator John McCain had better strap in and get ready for the ride of his life as he is remembered in history as the most vocal opponent against this moral, just and long-overdue repeal. His actions will be displayed along with those of many other dinosaurs who have attempted to block progress like George Wallace blocking the auditorium entrance at the University of Alabama in ’63. Can you imagine how intolerant and ridiculous Harry Truman would appear today if he had demanded "studies on effects on troop morale" prior to integrating black and white troops? Enjoy your immortality Senator McCain. You've earned it.

Would love to see a reporter call McCain out on the fact that like Stewart said, McCain was in the room and the study is named exactly what he said he wanted. That is what infuriates me about interviews. Quit letting these fools lie to right to your and our faces.

Come on Jon. Give the old guy a break. He thinks Don't Ask, Don't Tell is about how many homes he owns.

She's got hundreds of millions, looks, children... what's missing.

Hysterical as usual! Hahahaha. Ridiculous. I lost faith in John McCain right around the time he sold out to the evangelicals...Any claim to being an independent with a backbone went away then...

wait -- where is the funny segment he did on Charlie Rangel? why isn't that on this site... like every other one of Stewart's segments?

real shock that it's missing.

hypocrites.

I think this guy is ripping HuffPo, not Daily show.

Umm right here: http://www.realestateradiousa.com/2010/11/17/jon-stewart-rips-charlie-rangel-video/

See unlike Fox News, and all the right-winger "news," The Daily Show mocks all hypocrisy, not just Republican hypocrisy. But with the Tea Party, its hard not to spend almost the entire making fun of them....

John Mc Cain is a war hero, and deserves respect for that, but lets not blur the lines he should not be respected for his constant flip flopping on every thing he once stood for it's a downright disgrace!
Yes, people can grow and change over time but a complete about face on issue after issue is just shameful and false. All because you want to hold on to a Senate seat,it's embarassing to any decent person to see his clips played where he took bold honest positions and now he has abandoned HIS OWN POSITIONS to oppose this President! I really used to respect Mr. McCain but now I JUST REGRET HE HAS LOST HIS WAY!

I have never understood why people say he is a hero.he did nothing different than many other Vietnam veterans,in fact he did less than a lot of them that gave their lives instead of selling out. What Did he do to be called a hero, did he save someones life, did he give his life? He instead gave information to get better treatment from the VG.That does not a hero make.As for saying he would not leave the prison till others left, what else could he say without giving himself away for what he was a hot dogger.

In my mind there is one difference between a hetrosexual person and homosexual person (gays and lesbians). The only differnce is that gays and lesbians are attracted to those of the same sex and hetrosexuals are attarcted to those of the opposite sex. Other then that homosexuals live their lives as any other normal person they get up put on their pants, put on a shirt, put on the shoes, put on the shoes, eat breakfest, get in the car, and go to work.
