Teachers Find Drugs In Boston Preschooler's Shoe

Preschool

11/16/10 11:44 AM ET   AP

BOSTON -- After a 3-year-old Boston girl complained that her foot hurt, her preschool teacher took off her sneaker and found 17 small plastic bags containing crack cocaine.

Police say teachers at the Walnut Grove preschool were adjusting the girl's sneaker Monday when they found the individually wrapped bags of crack.

The teachers told police the girl said her mother had put "candy" inside her sneaker.

But the girl's mother told police she knew nothing about the drugs. Police arrested 19-year-old Demare Gary, a friend of the mother's, after he allegedly told police the crack was his.

The mother was not arrested, but police said the investigation is continuing. Gary's attorney, Lauren Redmond, was in court and couldn't immediately comment.

why the child didn't eat the "candy" is what I don't get. Most children would make it a point the first chance they got. This could have been so much more tragic.

My God. I'd hate to think what would have happened had one of those bags broke. I simply cannot fathom the thinking behind using a child to transport or store drugs. Why not give them a gun and a handful of angry scorpions while you're at it? And no, I don't mean German rock musicians.

I hope to G-D that Social Services are looking into the mother! How old is the mother, that she is friends with a 19yr old? Why was there drugs in her daughters shoe and she didnt know?? To me, that just seems like she doesnt deserve her child; she's not being a responisble parent.

According to a Boston Globe article, the guy is the father of a younger baby (the mom's second child).

Why was the mother not arrested? A kid that age isn't sophisticated enough to lay blame on anyone BUT the person at fault! The child should be in protective services... not with that mom.

Sorry it doesn't work that way. Children are notoriously difficult eye witnesses.

so right. Many years my daughter told her preschool teacher that" Daddy drinks and drives." Fortunately the teacher was experienced enough to ask "What does Daddy drink". Her reply: "He loves coffee". I am sure finding the drugs will prompt further investigation...it certainly calls into question the home environment but further info is needed.
