5 Souvenirs That Should Stay In Their Native Land (PHOTOS)

First Posted: 11/18/10 07:54 AM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 07:15 PM ET

Bringing home travel mementos can be one of the hardest parts of one's travels. You want to bring a small part of that city back home without it going unnoticed. Although photographs and postcards can be a cheaper alternative, you want to bring a special something for mom, dad or any other loved ones. Rather than getting frustrated with generic souvenirs that are usually a waste of money, there are plenty of unique alternatives. There are just some items that shouldn't even enter your luggage.

What do you think of the ones that made this list? Have any others to add? As always, send in your photos!

Eiffel Tower Replicas
1 of 6
Sorry friends! It will be hard to bring home a nice French man with a sultry accent, or even a hot loaf of French bread. But, do your friends a favor and don't bring home a replica of the Eiffel Tower. Everyone is quite familiar with how it looks and it might not match with the décor of everyone's living space anyway.

Instead: Bring home a Parisian fragrance.

I drank the water in London and brought back intestinal amoeba. Woulda thunk it?

I bring back coffee cups, caps, T-shirts, beer glasses, and car window decals! In every case, they create conversation which is something I enjoy very much.
Did you actually ski Marmot Basin?
When were you in Peru?
What's Gdansk?
Get in any bear-jams at Yellowstone?
There's also a big plus related to certain souvenirs. If you lose one or it breaks, you have to go back and replace it!
Can't be without my Big Sky coffee cup!

Many years ago you actually got a beautiful and free lei with fresh flowers when landing in Hawaii... you know the day when you still had leg room in coach. Ah, the good old days!

Comeon ;) what's wrong with Effiel Tower replicas? I have one, and St Basil, and the Blue Mosque, and some others. Toss them on the shelf and it gives you something else to dust.

I love my Effiel Tower replica. And mine even has a pencil sharpener in the bottom. :D

When my wife and I went to Paris for our honeymoon, it seemed that every popular tourist site had North African people selling Eiffel Tower replicas. There were times it felt that we were running a gauntlet.

LOL, I actually bought an Eiffel Tower replica.

The Hawaiian lei would be appropriate if the intended recipient is a child.

When I go to visit Germany, my friends here in the USA, want souvenirs, shot glasses are on top of the list, keyrings 2nd, Steins 3rd. So as long as they enjoy them, I will bring it to them.

I definitely disagree about the shot glasses, in particular. I travel often, and enjoy collecting shot glasses from the places I've been. With my friends you can never have enough shot glasses, plus they make for good conversation pieces with new friends.

What good are souvenirs that you end up eating or using up shortly after returning from the trip? Isn't the point to have mementos years later to remind you later of the experience of the trip?

And a lot more money to fling around on their travels. A bottle of Parisian fragrance instead of a little Eiffel Tower replica? A pricey bottle of boutique suntan lotion instead of some cute little cheap plastic leis? Vintage clothing from NY instead of a classic tee? If you have more than one friend to buy for those items they suggest you buy "instead", are going to be a small fortune.

I like to give key rings. Small, light and everyone can always use an extra key ring.

But giving tacky souvenirs is the best part of traveling. OK, not the best . . .
