Haiti Photos Provide Shocking Glimpse Into Suffering

First Posted: 11/18/10 01:28 PM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 07:15 PM ET

The death toll from Haiti's cholera epidemic rose above 1000 this week with no signs of abatement. Now, haunting images of the suffering the nation is enduring have also been released. In the photograph below, a woman and a man collapse nude on the street as passersby continue walking.

The cholera epidemic has led to deadly protests against the U.N. after fears arose that relief workers were spreading the disease, which the U.N. denies. According to the A.P.:

The U.N. denies responsibility, and a mission spokesman said the protests were politically motivated. Haiti's national elections are scheduled for Nov. 28.

Cholera is transmitted by feces and can be all but prevented if people have access to safe drinking water and regularly wash their hands.

But sanitary conditions don't exist in much of Haiti, and the disease has spread across the countryside and to nearly all the country's major population centers, including the capital, Port-au-Prince. There are concerns it could eventually sicken hundreds of thousands of people.

Haiti's presidential elections are scheduled for this month, but are not expected to have much impact on the nation's ongoing crisis, says the Telegraph. While current President Rene Preval, who is prevented from running, was considered ineffectual in the aftermath of the earthquake, the crop of contenders does not hold much promise. As the Telegraph notes:

Those jockeying to succeed him are from the political elite that has pushed the country to its knees. One measure of their standing is the widespread regret within Haiti and beyond that the rapper Wyclef Jean was barred from standing by resident rules.

These photographs are irresponsible. I have been working in Haiti during this epidemic as a photojournalist since Nov 5. These photos taken by a novice AFP photographer named Hector Retamal, who was duly shocked by nudity and abandonment but they are not of cholera infected patients but of the singularly sometimes hard to find homeless and mentally ill in Port Au Prince. In fact the woman pictured is well known and has been around for years. These photos are true in what you see, a naked woman on the floor outside a hospital, but have no relationship to what is currently happening with the cholera crisis. They have been taken, transmitted and re transmitted by the photographer and AFP in an irresponsible manner only as sensationalist imagery seeking profit and publication.

One of the greater disappointments I have had was to see Barack Obama get a Nobel Peace Prize, and yet his administration has done little more to further the cause of world peace than his predecessor. Granted, he didn't start wars of aggression against other countries, etc. He has, however, done very little to stop them.

The recent history of Haiti is tragic. UN "peacekeepers" have been stationed there to "protect" the country from legitimate opposition to the imposed government that replaced Aristide, after the coup d'tat that followed the country's 200th birthday. The most heartbreaking part of this story has been that no one cares. Before the earthquake, I don't think one in ten Americans could find Haiti on a map, nor could they have a clue about that country's sad history. This was gunboat diplomacy at it's worst.

I keep seeing these news stories about warehouses full of medicines and supplies that are being undelivered...what is that all about? Is it true? If so, why? Why can't the people there be employed to deliver and distribute these items? This picture tells a thousand tales of our government looking the other way. I'm not being judgemental, but it seems that this kind of poverty so close to our shores is something we as a country could do something about and should be ashamed that we have not already done so in an effective way. And I am sure there is enough poverty in this country too that also fits the same prescription.

You will never find this kind of degrading photos of Americans in their moment of tragedy in or on a news outlet. Tells you if you did not already know, the lens under which we see the rest of the world.

Pathetic.

Haiti Riots Spread to Port-au-Prince
Riots in Haiti have spread to Port-au-Prince. Some 1,100 Haitians have died from cholera, a disease many believe was brought to the country accidentally by UN peacekeepers. The UN has denied this allegation. http://www.newslook.com/videos/267409-haiti-riots-spread-to-port-au-prince?autoplay=true

While this is truly sad, it's also sad that posts like this get hardly any comments and ones about Sarah Palin gets thousands.
