Elmer Grey House For Sale

Huffington Post     First Posted: 11/19/10 09:00 PM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 07:15 PM ET

This Pasadena home was built by Elmer Grey, the architect who designed the Pasadena Playhouse, Huntington Art Gallery, and the Beverly Hills Hotel, as his private residence in 1910. Now back on the market after 50 years, this 4 bedroom, 4.5 bathroom estate is currently listed at $1.8 million. The 3,400 square foot house sits on private, landscaped grounds. According to the original listing, the property has spared no details, with an emphasis on indoor/outdoor living, and "a spacious, covered front terrace which captures the breathtaking views, a superb spot for dining and enjoying all the property has to offer."

Stunning! Gorgeous, unique features and landscaping. First house I'd simply take--let it settle in around me--and wait a while before doing anything! But the kitchen needs updating...badly.

Beautiful house, beautiful location. $1.8M for this and the neighborhood seems like a real bargain; I wonder what the heating/cooling plant is like? I do agree that the kitchen could be much more than it is, but that's a quick remodeling job. Somebody's going to be very happy with this place -- I know I'd be.

Very very nice. Usually I really dislike the expensive houses HuffPo shows, but this is an exception. Warm and welcoming. Whoever ends up buying this is lucky!

Love it. It's so simple and seems like one could live there without feeling like they are in a museum. I think the simplicity of the kitchen caught me by surprise!

For once, I actually love one of the houses shown on HP. Very pretty - I'd buy it (if I were swimming in money) just for the outdoor spaces and windows.

The last of the beaux arts and a grand last act, a rebuke to the current crop of
cost plus trophy house ostentation.

And why? This man knows when to quit, is at home in his idiom, which
at that time was a part of a patrician culture in California that seldom overdid
and always did it well, the world of Maybeck, of Greene and Greene.

I'm usually pretty harsh when commenting in this display case of rich southern
California real estate. But Pasadena generally is off limits to bad taste. One
would almost think that some kind of culture actually happened down there.

Great comment.
However, I could not live in Pasadena. The smog is ubiquitous and chocking.

Sorry to hear that and not surprised. I was only there once, another era, 1957, when
was 17.

I would be happy to live in that little
tea house amidst the Japanese garden.
Big is getting very boring and cold!
