John Ensign To Run For Reelection: 'I Still Have A Lot To Offer The State' Despite Sex Scandal

John Ensign Reelection

Sen. John Ensign (R-Nev.) said Wednesday that his new plans to seek reelection in 2012 shouldn't be spoiled by his ill-famed marital indiscretions with the wife of a former high-ranking campaign staffer -- or the ensuing federal investigation.

"We've cooperated" with the investigations, Ensign told the Las Vegas Review-Journal. "I have never felt like I broke any laws or ethics rules."

More importantly, Ensign said, he didn't want the blemish on his record to carry over to his constituents' confidence in his ability to legislate effectively.

"I believe I still have a lot to offer the state and our country, and I believe just as passionately about a lot of issues," Ensign explained. "I think I can still contribute in a positive light."

"Darlene and I have talked a lot about it and thought about it, and prayed about it, and this just seems like the right direction," he said of his wife's support for his choice to run again.

"Senator Ensign has been focused on earning back the trust of Nevadans and does plan to run for re-election at this time," a press officer for Ensign said on Thursday.

While talk has grown that Ensign may be targeted by Republicans, Ensign does not appear to be worried about the possibility.

According to the Review-Journal, apart from questions of Ensign's character, he'll also have to get the ball rolling on fundraising initiatives.

Also unclear is how he would raise necessary funds in short order, especially while he is under investigation. A Nevada political operative Wednesday estimated Ensign might need to raise at least $10 million, while his campaign account was down to $280,000 because of legal bills.

"People have talked to me about offers for fundraising and home socials," he said, addressing his current deficiency.

Ensign's seeming confidence about his chances for reelection may be well-founded. Despite his campaign love-triangle scandal, Nevada voters, especially conservatives, have given the two-term Senator high marks.

And it's not like a similar scenario hasn't played out before. Sen. David Vitter (R-La.) went through high-profile infidelity issues, involving prostitutes no less, missteps that were hammered repeatedly in his recent campaign against Charlie Melancon. Vitter was apparently successful in avoiding the branding that Democrats tried to place on him, however, as he cruised to victory in early November.

The problem with christianity is that it places more emphasis on forgiveness than it does on goodness. It's kind of a "Sin all you want, just don't forget to confess your sins and ask for forgiveness occasionally" mentality.

Personally, I couldn't care less who is bedding whom. What consenting adults do with each other is their own business. However, I take extreme umbrage when those of few morals  Read More...

It ought to be very interesting to watch him in the primary against NV's other losing Repub...Angle. I truly hope its one of the two running just to ensure that NV gets two Dem reps.

Wow! Breaking the laws of God, but so many trying to legislate morality---it must be nice when your own dung doesn't stink.

Why would an admitted adulterer have any problem winning in a Republican primary?  It's not like he is the first good ol' boy to have done this and then has his wife pray with him about their future.

Please, give me a break.  Having an affair is one thing but to pay the woman, her husband and their kids off is pretty pathetic.  And to add the cherry to the top, have a fellow Christian in your C-Street group negotiate the deal.

Ewwwwwww....

"I have never felt like I broke any laws or ethics rules." -- John Ensign

Well, that's really the problem, isn't it? He doesn't feel like he did anything wrong. Of course, he prayed about it, and that makes it all okay. Ah, nothing like prayer. Bleach for the soul. Sh*t!

This is the lesson for every politican. What you do in your personal life is a private matter. We need a Centrist Gov't without bias to individual choices....

That would be fine with me, but it is the Republicans who campaign on those family values and how is adultery a family value?

GOP is full of sound and fury, signifying nothing!

The new standard among  Republicans is not to have done something, but to feel you have done it. Thus, even if one broke laws, if he feels he has not then he is ok.  The new standard entirely displaces reality and makes the new standard for everything subjective.

'I Have Never Felt Like I Broke Any Laws Or Ethics Rules'

Of course not. That's because he's had his "counselors" at the C Street house telling him it doesn't matter what he does because he's part of an elite ruling class that's above the law and above morality.
