Middle Class Tax Cuts: Democrats To Hold Votes On Letting Bush Tax Cuts Expire For Wealthy

WASHINGTON — After meeting with President Barack Obama Thursday, Democratic leaders in Congress said they plan to hold a series of politically charged votes to extend middle-class tax cuts while letting tax cuts for the wealthy expire.

Republicans are expected to block the plan, leaving both sides back at square one as they try to negotiate a deal to spare families at every income level from a big tax increase in January.

Democratic officials said Obama did not embrace a particular approach to the tax cuts in his Oval Office meeting with Democratic leaders. He indicated he wanted to wait for a meeting with Democratic and Republican leaders on Nov. 30 before staking out a position.

"I think there's a reality here which is that while it might be best to continue the middle-class tax cuts and raise taxes on higher income people, the votes are not there to do that," said Sen. Joseph Lieberman, a Connecticut independent who caucuses with the Democrats. "I think everybody's got to deal with a stark reality which is, are we going to leave here knowing that we haven't come to an agreement and that everybody's taxes are going to go up Jan. 1?"

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., said he would like to schedule competing votes on the Senate floor. One would be on Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell's bill to make all the tax cuts permanent; the other would be on a Democratic plan to extend only the middle class tax cuts. Neither is expected to pass.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said she plans to hold a similar vote on extending the middle-class tax cuts in early December.

"We're united in recognizing we have to protect the middle class," Reid said of Senate Democrats.

McConnell said, "Votes structured for symbolic reasons in December won't prevent a tax hike in January. It's not enough to talk about the problem of the looming tax hike on families and hundreds of thousands of small businesses across the country, we have to fix it."

Obama and Democratic leaders in Congress want to extend the tax cuts for individuals making less than $200,000 and married couples making less than $250,000. Republicans and a growing number of rank-and-file Democrats want to extend them all.

After congressional elections in which Republicans won control of the House and gained seats in the Senate, Obama signaled a willingness to compromise with Republicans. But Democrats are struggling to come up with a unified position.

Congress returned this week for a lame-duck session in which Democrats still have majorities in both the House and Senate. However, they will need Republican support to get the 60 votes necessary to pass a tax bill in the Senate.

Democratic leaders left their White House meeting with Obama Thursday without a game plan for negotiating with Republicans. Later, Senate Democrats met behind closed doors for more than two hours, but didn't agree on a strategy beyond trying to prevent a tax increase for the middle class.

"Most think that it makes sense to maintain the tax cuts for those below $200,000, couples below $250,000, and there's a lot of discussion about all kinds of other options and there's basically no decision made,'" said Sen. Max Baucus, D-Mont., chairman of the Senate Finance Committee.

Obama had invited GOP leaders to the White House meeting, to start laying the groundwork for a bipartisan compromise, but the Republicans asked to reschedule the meeting after Thanksgiving.

Republicans have been much more unified in their position. Most say their first choice is to make all the tax cuts permanent; some have said they are open to a temporary extension of all the tax cuts.

"While some in Congress have a strange desire to raise taxes on hundreds of thousands of small businesses across the country, Republicans and a growing chorus of Democrats believe that no one should have the government take even more out of their paycheck next year," McConnell said.

Make the Republicans block the thing to extend the cuts for the middle class. That should send a message to the middle class and make it clear they are no friend to them.

Permit all the tax cuts to expire and then in the new Congress introduce bills to reinstate only the middle class cuts and those which have been shown to increase job creation.  Then, fight for them and take the  Read More...

Give me a legitimate reason why the rich can't afford the tax hike? Please one of you in that elite class give a good reason. I mean really think hard and justify it! What would it really hurt? If I have to reduce my living expenses to survive why should they not have to? Explain it to me really!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

McConnell says no one wants to pay more taxes. I will. Freedom isn't free. Ya gotta pay taxes. I want fire and police protection. I want smooth, paved roads. I want clean, safe drinking water. I want well educated children. I want to live in a civilized society. I am a responsible adult and I want to pay my fair share. And I want the millionaires and billionaires to pay their fair share. And I want corporations to pay their fare share. When that's done, the crisis is over.

The Rich humans in America are not begging for the Tax Cuts. Nor are the Rich in America, ragging to stop Middle-Class America Tax Cuts. The selfish-greedy Congressional "Tactics", not "Strategies"(haters in the format of "Republicans" because "haters" have no patience for thinking things out..), are simply little boys' tails wagging, as excuses to refuse to accept the Authentic-Legal, America Elected and Confirmed President Barack Hussein Obama as America 44th President, USA. "Republican" "Haters" in the USA Congress 2010 need Psychological treatment -An Immediate Intervention inclusion on the 2010 Congressional, USA, Lame Duck Legislative Session...Yet, major media journalists fear saying to the "phony" republicans, "NO", we, (Major Media) will no longer give ear to the "Haters" blaspheming our America Presidency-nor America's 44th President Barack Hussein Obama, USA, for this mad child's play that has gone on far too long...As a journalist college student who lived out my dream as a Media Journalist-Print/Broadcast, I found the Media could be both friend/foe at different times or at the same time depending on how the cards are played and the greed of the Media Journalist-Reporters/Administrators...For the readers, trust your hearts. Then, ask yourselves, as I do, continually, "Do I want my grandchildren to grow up without high hopes of making a positive change or difference in America? The wide-world? Think about fore parents who opened doors of hope for us-America 2010...

yes any thing they can to diligitamize him. as an African American mysel. i have listened and then watched the media let slights go by. and then to answer the slights have a right and left debate on what was a given to respect the president and his wife before. even George Bush. but every little slight the Republicans can do to pretend Obama's not the president. they do. and he was legally elected not handed the presidency from the courts.

all this talk about tax cuts might draw the attention of the ignorant people and make them aware to see reality
and in the end the GOP will have to deal with their rich masters , that they overplayed their song
too many times and everybody is tired of listen to it.

What happened to all the "Deficit Hawks" & "Pay Go" votes in the House & Senate?

What are they going to "Off-Set" to PAY for these TAX CUTS?

Is all the RHETORIC flown out the window? Are Congresspersons & Senators willing to put these Tax Cuts on the CREDIT CARD, the DEBT?

Dear America.
Corporate America has outsourced your jobs overseas for years now. Dell Computers recently announced that they are investing $100 billion(10yrs) in China!! In America ?? $0. Simple economics. $10 billion @80% employment costs=$8billion. Avg that @$50k per job=160,000 jobs. Multiply that by 100 manufacturers = 16 million jobs.
So while Corporate America happily ships your jobs abroad to employees who live under a repressive regime, mainly China, the rich fat cats enjoy the freedom and luxuries of living in America where they can say what they want, do what they want and buy their control of the government.
But you are willing to buy that Dell Computer, Apple Product, shop at Walmart all selling you products made by people who you were laid off for.
Take an inventory of everything you have in your living room. Record the country of manufacture, where you bought it and its cost. Now multiply those amounts by 77 million families then divide by $50,000 and that is how many people you would employ in the US. Now do that to everything in your house. Every lost American job employs 20 Chinese workers.
You wanna know why GM and Chrysler are both hiring? Because they have little choice but to create the jobs here.
So what is the solution. Tax AND penalize the rich who outsource.
Stop shopping at Walmart and any company that caters to outsourcing.
Show those corporations that it is not worthwhile outsourcing. As they say.. money talks....

Add HOME DEPOT to the List. Read about the owner of HOME DEPOT:

Bernie MARCUS:

"On October 17, 2008, Marcus participated in a conference call urging clients to send "large contributions" to groups working against the Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA), as well as to vulnerable Senate Republicans, who could help block passage of the bill. Over the course of an hour, Marcus and Rick Berman, an aggressive EFCA opponent, framed the legislation as an existential threat to American capitalism, or worse.[5][6][7]

"This is the demise of a civilization," said Marcus. "This is how a civilization disappears. I am sitting here as an elder statesman and I'm watching this happen and I don't believe it." ..."If a retailer has not gotten involved in this, if he has not spent money on this election, if he has not sent money to Norm Coleman and all these other guys, they should be shot. They should be thrown out of their goddamn jobs," Marcus declared."

Dems are falling into repub's trap yet again. They will blast the dems as raising the tax for everyone. Like bundling the $200 million dollars tax cut with the $250 stimulus money, they will fail the PR big time.

Because of my business, taxing above 250 or even 1 mil pushes my costs up. In this economy that means people will have to be cut as there is no other expenses we can slash, we are cut to the bone already.

People better be careful what they wish for on this one, in this economy. Like it or not, raising taxes on the so called wealthy may cost more than you get back! Employers will have no other choice. (Or prices will rise big time!)

how much of the tax cuts have you reinvested into your business over the past ten years? The average person with income over $1M has gotten a 300,000 tax break per year, while the average person with income under 250k only gets $800 per year. so of the roughly $3,000,000 that you have gotten, how much went into personal investments and how much went towards real job creation?
03:00 PM on 11/22/2010
I like to not invest too heavy. The formula that worked for me was buy (the business) cheap, upgrade where needed, pump out as much product as possible for the greatest profit possible, bank money like crazy, build a solid $5,000,000.00 nest egg, sell the business (another $750,000.00 to the bank account plus receivables), get out, retire by 55 and go enjoy the rest of our lives.

So many get hung up on the idea that a business must be long term. That it is some kind of social parachute. That we must do it forever.

What ever happened to a solid game plan that allows one to live in comfort and enjoy their life? I don't live to own a business or work. I work and own a business so that I won't have to work. Why do it otherwise?

You raise taxes on me and people will lose their job as I don't do pay cuts on myself.... Sorry, welcome to reality...

Well... someone has to pay the bills.
The Republicans have adopted the following policy.
To the tax payers: Hey boss(tax payers),. Can you co-sign a loan for me? If you do, I'll take a pay cut!
Then splurges, spends the loan money and rack up the company credit cards. Then when the loan comes due and the collection agencies come calling, they say"Screw this!! I Ain't paying!!! You co-signed the loan!! you pay for it!!!

Ending the tax bonuses to the rich may really work out to be a grand slam.. when they see their portfolios shrinking without their welfare checks.. they might actually be motivated to invest in our economy and make some money the old fashioned way.. by earning it.

What is Obama expecting to happen at the meeting with the republicans on the 30th?  First of all, this is the makeup meeting with the republicans for the meeting they didn't bother to attend the first time.  What does this tell you about the possibility of progress on this issue.  Obama needs to learn from past experience.   What is going to be different from today on the 30th.  Nothing.  NOTHING!

Thank You !.....

How else will we even begin to address our nation's deficit picture ! The millionaire, billionaires are the ones with the money, and they've enjoyed their Tax Breaks implemented by GW for awhile now. But now its time to start paying their fair shares of taxes again, seeing what a fix our country is in financially, they should be ready & willing to step up to do the right thing without all of this "We Want an Extension on our Tax fix" nonsense ! I'll even borrow a phrase from their colleague in whackiness.... "MAN UP GUYS" !

Again, I'd rather see my taxes go up than to extend the cuts for the ultra rich. Not that I have anything against the ultra rich, I'm working on my second million right now (I gave up on the first one) but as bad a shape as everything is in right now, we need to quit rewarding those who have the most and punishing those who have the least.
