LISBON, Portugal (AP) -- President Barack Obama says the U.S. intends to work with Portugal and all of Europe to support vigorous steps to strengthen the world's financial markets. (Scroll down for photos)
Obama spoke alongside Portuguese Prime Minister Jose Socrates after the two leaders met in Lisbon Friday where Portugal is hosting the NATO summit.
The president said the focus of their conversation was on what he called the highest priority for both countries -- creating jobs and prosperity for their people. That will come through increased trade and investment.
Obama met earlier with the president of Portugal and said the NATO meetings provide an important opportunity for countries to align their approach to the transition in Afghanistan.

LISBON, Portugal (AP) -- President Barack Obama says he looks forward to a NATO alliance that is revitalized for the 21st century.
Obama arrived in Lisbon, Portugal, on Friday to attend separate summits with NATO and the European Union that will put his war strategy in Afghanistan in the spotlight.
NATO countries are expected to set a goal of giving Afghans control of their security by the end of 2014. The alliance will also pledge a longer-term commitment to Afghanistan focused on training and development.
Obama said the meetings provide an important opportunity to align the approach to the transition in Afghanistan.
He spoke after a meeting with Portuguese President Anibal Cavaco Silva (ah-NEE'-bal ca-va-COO' SEEL'-vuh).
