Ahmadinejad: Girls Should Marry At 16

Ahmadinejad Marry

TEHRAN, Iran — Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad urged young girls to marry at age of 16 in his latest rejection of the country's once effective family planning program, local newspapers reported on Sunday.

Following record birth rates in the wake of the 1979 Islamic revolution, Iran implemented an internationally praised family planning program in the 1990s that dramatically reduced the growth rate. Ahmadinejad has criticized the program as an ungodly and a Western import.

"We should take the age of marriage for boys to 20 and for girls to about 16 and 17," he said, according to the state-owned Jam-e Jam daily. "The marriage age for boys has reached 26 and for girls to 24, and there is no reason for this."

Since coming to power in 2005, the Iranian president has sought to increase of the country's population, which is already at 75 million, with a third between the ages of 15 and 30.

In July, he inaugurated a new policy to encourage population growth with financial incentives for every new child born, having previously said the country could feed a population of 150 million.

Critics said the policy will only exacerbate unemployment, currently set 9 percent officially. There are an estimated 3 million unemployed people of working age in the country.

Ahmadinejad shouldn't get married at any age; we don't need him having any descendents.

Most Iranians cannot marry even at the age of thirty thanks to the corruption and incompetent management of the economy which has lead to a very high unemployment rate.

Mr Ahmadinejad should resign and let the real winner of last years election become the President of Iran and the clergy should return to Ghom as Khomeini promised.

And we should stop talking about regime change and allow Iran peaceful access to nuclear energy as is their right under NPT. Each time we or our Israeli (masters/allies) talk about bombing Iran the right wing in Iran gets more powerful.

Exactly, they have an abundance of educated young adults but no jobs. My cousin got married at age 17 to a man 10 years older than her. He has a building company with his brother. The price of housing is ridiculous- the only way they got married was because they renovated the parking level of her parents house into an apartment.
However my other Iranian cousins have not been so fortunate.

why should anyone be surprised that he'd say somthing as sick as this? He's obviously very troubled and at least a little demented....Palling around with fools like Chavez, Putin, Morales, Castro to name a few....A sick loser, he is!! I feel bad for the people of Iran...Hope Mahmoud gets well (in the mind) soon!

What the hell do you know about Iran and it's president? What the hell do you know about Chaves, Putin,Morales, or Castro? don't like them because they are not U. S. puppets like other latino gov. heads are, and don't let U. S. corporations rob them of thier resources.
Iranian president did not loose the election. two days before the election, two separate, independant polls, one in France and one in England put Mr. Ahmadinejad ahead by double digit numbers. U.S. would do any thing to demonize these leaders, because they dare to say no to corporate America. so why don't you go write about those corrupt "latinonation" puppets that you may know a little about

Iran (and Iraq for that matter) have an incredibly rich history dating back to pre-historic, Biblical times, the Middle ages, the 20th century and today...The Persian empire is a magnificient image to contemplate which has been the subject of so many (Western and other) films, documenteries, studies, research, books etc.....So, I know a little about Iran and Iraq..I know many of the great Persian and Arabic speaking peoples (friends of mine as a matter of act) who have either lived/visited the US or have moved her permanently...They are beautiful people with a beautiful language with beautiful cultures!!!
Ahamadeinaalamajhad is NOT representative of them by and large..And he's NOT representative of the Iranain public by and large though an internal poll may suggest otherwise..
Iran doesn't need to be a "puppet government" and I don't advocate that for the US by any means!!! Not sure what your point is about corporate America but I'm no fan of them most of the time either..
By the way..Chavez is spelled with a "z" in Spanish (Portuguese surnames typically carry the S, but Chavez is Venezuelan, native Spanish speaker)....
Viva Iran, Abajo Ahmadinejead!!!!! Viva Venezuela, abajo Chavez!!!

Iran is already busting at the seams with highly educated people and with all the problems many are not marrying and having kids.

That will create a large gap in the future of very young and very old is they don't act now.

Look at the USA for your reference what are we facing now ? 62 % of Americans 65 and over ?

Keep in mind this guy was rejected in the last election. Sadly, the Iranians have to hear this embarassment until they have enough conscientious officials to overthrow him, now that real elections have been stopped. The Iranian people are not, as a whole, as embarrassing as this loon.

Yup, married off when they're young and dumb. By the time they figure things out, they'll be bogged down with no education, several children and low self-esteem. Iran is a nightmare for women.
02:53 PM on 11/26/2010
That's the same thing that happens to unmarried women in the United States who don't use birth control. Most non-western women probably think that the west is a nightmare for them too.

Maybe your girls, but not all of them. It's just a matter of perspective.

Not true. Some of us supervise our teenage girls AND boys. Once they're 18 and have graduated from high school, they can make their own decisions. Until then they're under parental supervision.

Too funny - maybe the Iranians should learn to speak espanol too -
