Mike Huckabee Lauds Ousting Of Iowa Judges Who Agreed With Decision To Strike Gay Marriage Ban

DES MOINES, Iowa — Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee said Sunday that Iowa voters likely launched a national movement when ousting three state Supreme Court justices who agreed with a decision to strike a ban on gay marriage.

Huckabee was in Des Moines courting evangelical conservatives who pushed him to victory in Iowa's leadoff precinct caucuses in the last election.

"The significance and historic nature of the judicial elections here in Iowa were far bigger than the borders of Iowa," he said. "It was a very important statement that voters made, a statement that resonated across the country and one that I think will give legs to a larger movement over the next few years."

Huckabee spoke to more than 1,000 evangelicals gathered at a massive church in Des Moines. The gathering marked the merger of a series of evangelical groups into a single organization known as The Family Leader, to be headed by veteran activist Bob Vander Plaats.

The merged group likely will play a crucial role in Iowa's Republican politics, as the campaign for the state's precinct caucuses begins to warm. And the former Baptist minister Huckabee is moving quickly to court the activists.

"This is a group of people with whom I am very comfortable and familiar," he said.

After winning Iowa's precinct caucuses in the last election cycle, Huckabee quickly faded and he's now working as a television and radio commentator. But he makes it clear he's thinking of another run for the GOP presidential nomination.

"Am I keeping the option open? Yes," Huckabee said. "Am I open to considering it? Of course I am, I would be foolish not to in light of what I've been through."

He noted that he's in a much different place than four years ago, when he said he was "an asterisk in the polls."

"This time in most of the national polls I'm either at the top or near the top and that certainly is a different position to be in," he said.

Huckabee said he wasn't sure about a timetable for reaching a decision, but it's likely that potential Republican candidates will begin making their intentions clear early next year. "Ask me in six months and I'll have a clearer answer," he said.

His message to evangelicals was that issues like stable and traditional marriage are economic ones, because they relate to the health of society.

"People who think of them as only peripheral social issues clearly have not done much depth of research and understanding of the economic impact of broken families," he said.

Huckabee said one election fallout that hasn't gotten much attention was Republicans taking over 19 state legislatures around the country, giving the GOP a much stronger hand in formulating policies often decided at the state level.

"This may be more significant than what happened in Congress because the long-term policy is going to be affected by those state legislatures more than Congress, particularly a divided Congress," he said.

Vander Plaats, who is to lead the merged evangelical group, ran the campaign to oust the three Supreme Court justices in Iowa. The justices were part of last year's 7-0 decision striking down a state law defining marriage as being between one man and one woman.

Antipathy toward that ruling energized social conservatives, and they clearly are sharpening their political structure for coming elections.

Vander Plaats said the new organization is "a renewed vision and fresh approach toward engaging Iowans to strengthen families."

Huckabee said the new role means Vander Plaats "will play a very key policy role" in setting the state's political agenda.

One thing Huckabee made clear as he ponders his decision is he won't be swayed by any decisions made by former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, also considered a potential candidate and who has close ties to the evangelical base that Huckabee courts.

"She's got a very strong and important voice and has brought a lot of energy to the grass roots," Huckabee said.

He added that, "One of the things I learned in politics is you never make your decision based on what other people do."

Huckabee conceded that should Palin run "she may run away with it, and that's something everybody has to be prepared for."

It's not a pretty fact, but it's a fact that at the moment the three "leading" contenders for the GOP Presidential nomination are:

Gov. Palin (hardcore evangelical), Gov. Huckabee (Baptist minister), and Gov. Romney (Mormon priest)...as things stand it's surely not out of line to say that religion may well play a large part in their stands on public policy regarding marriage equality...

I for one am seriously considering changing my registration to the GOP so that I'll be able to vote for just about anyone but them...

repulsive; both Huckabee and the constituents that voted for fear and bigotry.

Part of what scares me about this is what it say for Mr. Huckabee’s respect for the rule of law. Usually judges are recalled because of corruption or concerns over a pattern of excess severity or laxity in sentencing. In this case these judges were recalled for not letting personal prejudice get in the way of justice. The justices unanimously found that certain Iowa citizens were being excluded from the rights Iowa grants all of her citizens, then the justices made equal those citizens.
When you combine this with the happenings in the Bush Justice Dept. it makes me fearful for our justice system. Justices worrying about their jobs not, for following the rule of law, but for not allowing partisanship to over-rule their judgement. This is not how the checks and balances placed in our constitution by the founding fathers is supposed to work.

They don't want the actual rule of law...waht they want is to BE the law and woe betide anyone on their bad list! This is why this is so scary. They will do anything to get their hate made legal.

How insulting...as if gays do not add to the health of this country - give me a break. This is Jesus with a club, a stone in his hand...not the Jesus of the gospels who wrote with a stick in the dirt to turn away haters and judgmental self righteous religious fanatics!

I used to like this guy - not any more really - and those judges getting ousted I don't believe this means gay marriage is banned again in Iowa - it just means these three judges no longer are employed.

As a former Christian and child of a missionary family I fail to understand the lack of compassion and tolerance by those at the forefront of the Christian movement. One reason (among several) I no longer align myself with Christianity is because of this hypocrisy.

Nowhere in the bible does it say anything about homosexuality outside of the "lie with another man" bit - which is a bit vague. They take a few words in the old testament and use that to demonize and hurt homosexuals in this country.

I did a report over at CNN a few years back on three same sex couples of faith - I was struck by how same sex couples could align with Christianity. And it seems as if, according to Huckabee's position above, same sex couples aren't allowed to practice their form of Christianity.Does Huckabee know he's anti-religious freedom?

I can understand. This individual is one of the poorest examples for Christianity I have seen in some time. In fact, I call him a Christianist (kind of like "Islamist" instead of Muslim).

I also cannot understand how the Christians can be this intolerant...not only do they want to keep Christian GLBTs down but they want to make sure we have as few federal civil rights as possible. So far as I am aware, Jesus never said a thing about homosexuality. Paul did, but at the time the author of Leviticus penned "the lie with a man" thing and Paul made his comment about homosexuality, they had NO understanding of homosexuality as we currently understand it. But instead of evolving along with the science, homohaters keep throwing the same verses at us. I suspect it is because they think they are morally superior to us--that and the certainty that if they are not around to dictate to all of us, the world will fall apart or come to an end.

It is sad indeed to see GLBT couples who are Christian and yet cannot have the happiness of marrying in their own faith. I don't know the answer to that except to say that they should seek out churches such as the MCC, the Welcoming and Affirming Churches and the More Light Churches.

Having been raised in a strict Christian household I really related to your post. I became an agnostic because of the hypocrisy. F&F. I have to ask are you as appalled as I am that 90% of the "Conservative Christians" have absolutely no idea what is in the bible? It's like they read bits and pieces of the old testament - then skip almost all of the new testament and go right to revelations? They claim to be Christians - yet their actions show they have no clue as to the teachings of Christ.

No truer words spoken...let's get prepared for her NOT to "run away with it". This isn't DWTS, this is leading a nation. She has no idea what that entails. Unless Rove and Cheney are up for the job of pulling puppet strings again, we would be in for a wild and weird 4 years.

Logic, common sense and critical thinking - 3 traits he doesn't have (along with a slew of others like Palin, Angle, Bachmann, Beck, O'Donnell, Bush and his misadministration) but the American people require.

It takes a person of very shallow moral character to stand in front of a group of frightened, bigots and tell them their hate is his hate too. Too tell these people things you know are unethical and reprehensible. To tell these people that it is OK to oppress fellow Americans, if it is for religious reasons.

Ah, headline, Huckabee proves, once again, that he doesn't know what 'America' means. They think of it as an empty 'label' that they can fit onto their fundamentalist, authoritarian agenda. Whereas, it is just the opposite, America stands for 'the people' standing up for themselves AGAINST those very religious and political authoritarian rulers he supports. They got it exactly wrong. Wrong again, Bob!

These people wouldn't know the meaning of America if Lady Liberty whapped them upside the head. All they know is hate, finding people to look down on, and then trying to restrict or roll back their rights. The Founding Fathers would look at these people in disgust that the country they fought so hard to establish should define "freedom" as the right to look down on and oppress their fellow humans.

Just more proof that the republican have no candidate who won't outrage voters-- They have 2 choices: Bland (Romney, Pawlenty) or dynamic, but despicable (Palin, Huckabee, Barbour). At least Obama can still run on a positive message no matter how many of his opponents throw mud at him.

This is what they have been working towards for years. And many of these fools do not realise that if they are divorced and remarried, the haters will be coming for them as well.

I suggest that anyone who wants to see the America they want for all of us to read "The Handmaid's Tale" by Margaret Atwood.
