Velma Hart Laid Off: Woman Who Told Obama Of Financial Fears Loses Her Job

Velma Hart Laid Off

WASHINGTON — The woman who told President Barack Obama that she was "exhausted" from defending him and his economic policies and waiting for the change she expected after voting for him has another reason to be put out: She's lost her job.

Velma Hart, the chief financial officer for Am Vets, a veteran services organization based in Maryland, said Monday in an interview with CNBC that she was laid off as part of the nonprofit's effort to cut expenses.

"I want to focus on the positive and be optimistic," said Hart, who lives in Upper Marlboro, Md. "And assume that somehow things will work out, that there's an opportunity out there with Velma's name on it that's right around the corner."

Am Vets executive director Jim King told The Washington Post that the nonprofit was looking for ways to survive financially.

"It's not anything she did," King told the Post for a story that appeared online Monday. "She got bit by the same snake that has bit a lot of people. It was a move to cut our bottom line."

In September, during a town hall-style meeting on the economy televised by CNBC, Hart told Obama: "Quite frankly, I'm exhausted. Exhausted of defending you, defending your administration, defending the man for change I voted for, and deeply disappointed with where we are right now."

Hart said that the recession had taken an enormous toll on her family and left her and her husband worried about their finances. "And quite frankly, Mr. President, I need you to answer honestly," she said, "Is this my new reality?"

Obama responded, in part: "As I said before, times are tough for everybody right now. So I understand your frustration." He went on to cite examples of administration policies that he argued were helping families cope financially.

Hart told CNBC that she still supports Obama and noted that the economy is improving, though she finds the prospect of unemployment "scary."

I was listening to talk radio this afternoon and one of the callers made an excellent point.  He said it appears that the Progressive and liberal talk show hosts - as few as they are, are all over the place.  They never stick together and talk about how small the tax increase will be for the wealthy and it is not even an increase, just a return to prior level, etc.

Her being let go from her job was not incidental. It's only free speech if you something positive to say. If you say something negative it's like the Godfather putting a horses head in your bed. She was let go because the President didn't lke what she had to say.

Velma, the country feels your pain. Just not Obama. Record bonuses for Wall Street, and he does NOTHING. 7 MILLION FAMILIES ON THE STREETS and he does NOTHING. I'm sorry I voted for you.

I'm very sorry to see that she got laid off, but it seemed like she was already seeing that coming at the time she asked her questions. I really do hope someone sees a reasonable, intelligent person such as this without a job, and offers her one. If I had a position to offer right now, I'd inquire to see if she were qualified and/or interested.

You hate to see anyone lose a job. I cannot find any pity though because she "believed" in the first place. If there is a silver lining though, she seems strong enough and proud enough to not contribute to the problem by drawing a full 99 weeks of unemployment.

We can only hope the black community will come to realize that a vote for democrats is a vote against their interests. Republicans have always fought for them, from abolition to civil rights to education vouchers.

Perhaps they will look at what black democrat politicians have done for their communities (or, more specifically, done TO their communities) and realize they only thing they have in common with them is skin color. The black democrat politician stokes racial tensions as a distraction while he bankrupts the communities he claims to represent. For democrats, it's all about preserving political power. For black democrat politicians, race is just another means to those ends.

"Republicans have always fought for them"

You mean like when they tried to filibuster the Civil Right Act? Or maybe http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Southern_strategy

"Actually it was Robert (K.K.K.) Byrd who lead that filibuster, but you probably are not old enough to remember that.

I think what ciscoguy meant by" always fought for them" were acts like ending slavery (GOP) civil rights movement ( MLK lifelong GOPer)

You should stop listening to the DNC talking points and brush up on US history.

Here are some facts: the GOP never had a segregationist platform, the democrat party did. This "Southern Strategy" appeal to disaffected segregationists was the direct result of the democrat party dropping that as an official plank of their party. In 2010, it would be like democrats surrendering on abortion, and the GOP organizing an effort to peel away former abortion rights voters.

. . . "thank you" for bankrupting our Federal Government?,
"thank you" for lying us into the Iraq War?,
"thank you" for ignoring the suffering in New Orleans after Katrina?
"thank you" for deficit tax cuts for the wealthy, when they didn't ask for them?
"thank you" for "Mission Accomplished" before the withdrawal from Iraq?
"thank you" for sleeping on Afghanistan and rooting out Osama?

. . . .yeah, we've got a lot to be thankful for!?!?

All these questions seem to me to be missing the point. She said she was "exhausted" from defending Obama. She also says she still supports him, despite the exhaustion and now the unemployment. There is nothing in the article to suggest that she ever supported or defended Bush/Cheney.

I can see why defending Obama would be exhausting, since it's a 24/7 job. Take a break from defending for just one minute, and the non-thinking will come down on you like a ton of bricks.

Fact check...
Bush Cheney...entered office with record budget surplus.... got us involved on 2 illegal wars....worked in concert with chamber, of commerce and RNC sending American jobs overseas.....insisted giving the wealthiest 2% of Americans a tax cut costing us billions.
02:49 PM on 11/23/2010
wealthiest 2% of americans pay 90% of taxes, 40% of workers pay almost no taxes, how much more of a tax break do the bottom 40% need?

They should pay more taxes since most are businesses that have seen their profits increase remakebly over the years and the middle class worker hasn't had a raise since Regan was in office.

stop with that surplus nonsense. there was none. it was a 10 yr projection at static cost/expenditures.
