Barbara Bush: I Didn't Put Fetus In A Jar (VIDEO)

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 11/23/10 12:17 PM ET Updated: 05/25/11 07:15 PM ET

Barbara Bush Fetus In Jar

Former First Lady Barbara Bush said Monday that she had never, as her son George W. Bush intimated in his new book, placed her stillborn fetus in a jar -- but her housekeeper had.

Bush made the claim during an interview on CNN's "Larry King Live," in which she sat with her husband, former President George H. W. Bush, and explained the situation.

"I didn't put it in the jar," Bush said, clarifying that it wasn't as if it was "in the library" on display.

Bush continued:

"Paula [the housekeeper] put it in the jar. And I was shocked when she gave it to him to -- but, you know, memories dim a little bit but, anyway."

George W. Bush had written in Decision Points that his mother had showed him the dead fetus of a potential brother or sister when he was a teenager, and that the incident had helped implant in his mind the belief that abortion was fundamentally wrong.

Barbara Bush, for her part, has stated before that she believes abortion to be a personal matter, while her friends have reported that she privately believes in a woman's right to choose.

I have always had tremendous respect for this woman.....and many, many time I have felt sorry for her that she had the son she did. How many times do you have to bail your kid out before you say, "ENOUGH!"

I say once, there is a distinct difference between helping and enabling. I think Jr. needed some tough love from mom and dad and then he may have straightened out a little quicker than his 40's. Of course, it appears Jr. is more dangerous when he is sober so maybe we should all be pointing the finger at his AA counselor and spiritual advisor. I would rather have W praying to the porcelein deity on Sunday morning than having his finger near the self-destruct button!

Why does this have to be rehashed? Having had a a few miscarriages, I too have had to bring in the remains in a container. This has been asked of me every time. As odd as it sounds, this helps the doctors in their treatment. Besides, what is to be done with the remains at home? Should they be flushed? Should they be buried in the back yard?

Memories that far back are fuzzy at best. At this point in time, why does it matter?

Because what we do, matters.

And because that's such a personal product, it should at least be covered from view. I just can't picture toting around a clear glass jar with a fetus in it, even if it had to be transported to the hospital.

The housekeeper put it in a jar. Without directions from the boss lady. Sure.

My mom showed me a fetus in a jar when I was about seven. I never knew whose it was, though.

So let me get this straight...the 'hired help' put Barbara's aborted fetus into a jar, and then gave that jar containing the fetus to little Georgie? Does this story sound made-up to anyone else besides me? I can just imagine the cleaning lady finding said fetus floating in the toilet, and saying to his/herself 'hmmmm....I should probably put this in a jar..she may have wanted to keep it'. 'Here Georgie, be a good boy and go give this to your mother for me.' Adds up about as much as 2+2=5.

Its bizzare behaviour to be sure. But that doesn't necessarily mean it didn't happen. If it is true, its extremely messed up.

What else would we expect from a family of maniacs? When Jeb looses his bid for President, they are gonna break-out that jar and run it!

Not in a jar, Barbra? O - yes, a golden chalice, not a jar. Jars are for the working poor.
03:41 PM on 11/24/2010
She didn't put it there, she had the help do it.

I thought that too at first Then I realized if the miscarriage was so big it freaked out Georgie, she must have bled alot and been in alot of pain. Drs tell pts to bring tissue to hospital with them to be sure all tissue is past (retaining it is very bad). I worked in ER have personally told women to put it in jar or, if woman was out of it, whoever called to do it.
I thought if her sister or friend was there she'd have done it to...and maybe just the housekeeper was there. BB seems very no nonsense nonsquemish type. My bet is she was quite out of it. Truly, women have to do this all the time

I respect her for her pro choice stand. Her husband actually used to be pro choice as well... until Reagan put him on the ticket in '80.
