Nearly three weeks after the 2010 midterm elections, another Democrat has been swept out by the Republican wave.

Rep. Solomon Ortiz (D-TX) conceded to Republican challenger Blake Farenthold on Monday night. After serving 27 years in the House, the 73-year-old Ortiz called on Monday to congratulate his opponent and acknowledge that the remaining margin (just a few hundred votes) was insurmountable. A recount had been completed earlier that day.

According to the Associated Press, "Farenthold is the former owner of a computer consulting business and a self-described 'sidekick' on local talk radio. He received strong support from tea party activists in a district that stretches from Corpus Christi on the Gulf Coast to Brownsville on the border with Mexico."

Ortiz released the following statement:

This afternoon, the manual recount of votes cast in the race for U.S. Representative of the 27th District of Texas was concluded. After a careful, tedious and meticulous manual recount in six South Texas counties, each candidate gained a handful of votes. I continue to stress the importance of ensuring every vote was counted and every person's voice was heard. I decided to request a recount after many of my supporters and constituents contacted me and asked me to do so. I carried on with their request to ensure the integrity of the election was not compromised.

Today that process was completed as we recounted more than 106,000 votes in San Patricio, Nueces, Kleberg, Kenedy, Willacy and Cameron Counties. Although I gained votes during the manual recount, I did not surpass my opponent's lead. Therefore, with great respect and admiration in the Democratic process, I congratulate my opponent, Mr. R. Blake Farenthold, in his election to the 27th Congressional District of Texas in the U.S. House of Representatives.

I wish him well. I ask Mr. Farenthold, as I have done so for the past 27 years, to represent every one of his constituents in this Congressional District. I respectfully urge him to continue to: spur economic growth in South Texas; reduce the unemployment rate; help working families succeed; provide affordable health care for all Americans; secure our U.S.-Mexico border from violence and drug war; and ensure America can continue to be a land of freedom, opportunity and prosperity for all. Again, I wish him good luck.

To my supporters, those who have been with me since I was first elected to office in 1964 at the age of 27, from the very bottom of my heart, I thank you for standing by me and with me through it all. Words cannot tell how much I appreciate the love and support you have show me and my family over the years. Thank you for the good memories and endless accomplishments; thank you for your vote of confidence and for believing in me; thank you for your love and words of encouragement.

As this process comes to an end, I am at ease and peace with myself, my family, my colleagues in Congress, my constituents, life and most importantly, I am at ease with God. I truly believe that through our work and significant contributions during my years of service in Congress, we leave South Texas better than before.

I leave the national stage, certain of having done the right thing for those I represented. In the thousands of votes I cast in Congress for the 27th Congressional District of Texas, time and time again, I voted as my constituents asked me to do so. But just as important, I voted with my heart and for the best interest of all the people and communities I have had the pleasure of representing. I stand behind each and every one of those votes today and always will.

I end this campaign - and my public service - with a favorite verse from poet Robert Frost's 'The Road Not Taken'.
"I shall be telling this with a sigh
"Somewhere ages and ages hence:
"Two roads diverged in a wood, and I--
"I took the one less traveled by,
"And that has made all the difference."
It certainly has made all the difference.

U.S. Congressman Solomon P. Ortiz
27th Congressional District of Texas

The government should do less.

The liberal idea that there are really, really smart people far away in Washington that should take care of you and make your decisions for you is flawed.

The power of our form of government comes when we have millions of individuals making decisions based on their own best interests.

The answer is smaller government.

Nobody spends somebody else’s money as carefully as he spends his own. Nobody uses somebody else’s resources as carefully as he uses his own. So if you want efficiency and effectiveness, if you want knowledge to be properly utilized, you have to do it through the means of private property.

I am curious can you name the last and only President in the last 50 years to leave office with a smaller government workforce than when they entered office.

Small tip: It was not a Republican.

I guess that what Mr. G W Bush did with regard to the size of government wasn't so bad? He only added an entire department with a few thousand workers plus added Part D in Medicare. Didn't budget the cost of the two Wars, but funded them through appropriations---they added to the debt but you wouldn't see a budget line item for either of them. The efficiency of the government is more important than its size in my mind. I want them to realize that they work for us and not for themselves and big corporations. I have no objection to any legislator to argue their point of view and argue it forcefully. I do object when instead of presenting a point of view the action is to filibuster even bringing the item to the floor so that it can be argued. These members are not working for their country, they are working for their party and special interests and that is wrong.

Poor story. It misses the most important part of the event. Ortiz was part of this "Republican wave." It's not as if he can be in it but not of it.
It's been known since Nov2 that the GOP will control 244 seats. The story doesn't even give the numbers either party controls and what they mean in terms of House votes, veto overrides or anything else.
His victory is not a surprise, he was in the lead; his small margin demanded a recount.

Stupid Should Be Painful
10:24 AM on 11/24/2010
Better words I am looking for now from all the GOP lipservice about jobs will sound something like thhis: with the role of a group of House members working in conjunction to stave off hopelessness and a dim future we have passed legislation that will jumpstart this nation economically and it does not entail tax cuts and corporate subsidies but permanent good wage jobs that will effectively turn around our economy". I think that many GOP candidates ran on the jobs platform and whats the first thing they plan on doing when they convene: repeal the Healthcare bill and shut down NPR. Yep if you voted for them you deserve them. Oh and one other little golden nugget God forbid you voted for them and your unemployment is about to lapse. Can you say stupid should be painful?

Tea Party: The gift that keeps on giving.

In California, a Tea Partier has filed to get the "Arizona Law" on the 2012 ballot.
Which will absolutely guarantee a massive youth/Latino turnout.

Might just sweep us a rotten Repub or two out of the Congress (since they got swept out of state offices this time).

California does not elect Republicans so the latino/youth vote is irrelevant. That being said, the people in California will vote to pass an Arizona style immigration law. Remember prop 182

Ortiz lost because the Latino vote didn't come out.
It's a strong pickup chance in 2012.

Good news from California, where one seat remains uncalled:

Incumbent McNerney is up nearly 3,000 votes over his Tea Party challenger.

Ugh, it's disturbing that the vote was even that close. McNerney is a brilliant scientist who has served his constituency well, it's ridiculous he almost lost his job.

So by extension - Verner Von Braun would have made a good politician?
11:25 PM on 11/23/2010
Wrong. I live in the district. He is the lap dog of The Human Society and The Sierra Club....who support him. Both of these organizations control the East Bay which votes in this district. McEnerney is a fraud.

Good news from California? They fixed their deficit or the dems swept it under another rug?

Gotta luv those Texans. They have not been drinking the same junk that has corrupted the minds of Californians... the same Californians that are heading toward the next Greek tragedy.

I prefer California's direction. California is always ahead of the rest of the country; Texas might get there in 20 years or so, after the Hispanics begin exercising their right to vote.

Californians will "turn" Kalifornia over to the hispanics....then buy it back in 20 years for pennies on the dollar. But they will have to clean out the Drug carterls first.

This was a defeat for the Chamber of Commerce.

This is my district and I can assure you ol' Solly hasn't the slightest clue who Robert Frost is. Mr. Ortiz, we thank you for your 27 years of service. Honestly, it was about 17 too many. You got elected each November and then would disappear for 2 years and come back and run some ads and then start the process all over again. You are/were the poster boy for term limits. You preyed on poor hispanics in this region for 2 decades, convincing them that they had no other option than to vote for a fellow hispanic and a democrat and what did they get in return...more poverty and absent representation.

Be honest. How many times did you vote against him?

You may be right about him not representing the district, but the fact remains that the Dems should be able to retake this seat.
10:42 PM on 11/23/2010
I've never voted for Mr. Ortiz. There was never any reason to. I am a center right independent. Voted for Obama in 08 and Bill White for Governor and Mr. Farenthold. I wouldn't mind seeing a conservative democrat regain the seat in 2 years. Preferably a younger more energetic candidate. Mr. Ortiz was literally just turning pages on the calendar.
